   How did the states get their names? People who visit the United States sometimes don't know  1  the states got their names. Some of the most interesting names came  2  American Indian languages. Last week Bill went to New York. It was his first time there, and he didn't know his way around the city. He had a meeting at 10:00, and he wanted to be on time. The meeting was in the Peterson Building on 34th Street, but Bill didn’t know there. Two men stood on the corner. He asked them the way to the Peterson Building.

“Pardon me,” he said, “but can you tell me how to get to the Peterson Building on 34th Street?” “Sure,” answered one of the two men. “You can get there in five minutes. Go to the next corner and turn left. Walk three blocks and there you are.”

But the other man said: “There’s a better way. Get on the bus here at his corner. It stops right near the Peters Building.”

“Not Peters,” Bill told them, “Peterson.”

  Then the first man said, "Oh, that's on East 34th L, not West 34th. It's quite a long way from here. I have to take a bus. "

But the second man told Bill," No, don' t go by take a train. It'll take you to the Peterkin Building.”

“Peterson. Not Perterkin. " Bill looked at his watch. It was almost ten o'clock. " Thanks a lot. " Bill said, “I think I’ll take a taxi.”

As he got into the taxi he saw two men arguing and pointing the different ways. Next time he wanted to know how to get to a place, held ask a policeman!
