Granny, Grandpa
What is the matter with old people today! Don’t they know they’re old? Shouldn’t they be playing Mah Jong or sitting quietly in a corner?
Too many grannies and grandpas are now refusing to act their age. Just the other day there was a story in the paper of a nice old granny who bought a big scooter. The granny, who is in her sixties, didn’t have it long before she had an accident, that didn’t make her stop: it’s so much fun!
And there was another story. Some weeks ago, an 80-year-old grandpa in Shanghai had the third plastic surgery to make himself look younger! Why? Because he says he likes to look young. People are living longer, healthier lives now, and when they get to be grannies and grandpas they still want to live life to the fullest. In China many of the older generation have had a very hard life; they see their “senior” years as a time to catch up on all the fun they missed when they were young.
In North America this has been going on for a long time. Older people have more money to spend and they are spending it on themselves. They travel more than younger people, they take adult education courses, they ski and ride motorcycles… and they get married. These seniors have a pretty good outlook on life; they like life and keep on enjoying it as long as they can.
So let’s not be too hard on Granny and Grandpa; let them enjoy their lives and be happy for them.
