We spent a day in the country and picked a lot of flowers. Our car was full of flowers inside! On the way home we had to stop at traffic lights, and there my wife saw the bookshelf.

It stood outside a furniture(家具)shop. “Buy it,” she said at once. “We’ll carry it home on the roof-rack(车顶架). I’ve always wanted one like that.”

What could I do? Ten minutes later I was twenty dollars poorer, and the bookshelf was tied on to the roof rack. It was tall and narrow, quite heavy too.

As it was getting darker, I drove slowly. Other drivers seemed more polite than usual that evening. The police even stopped traffic to let us through. Carrying furniture was a good idea.

After a time my wife said, “There’s a long line of cars behind. Why don’t they overtake(超车)?”

Just at that time a police car did overtake. The two officers(警官)inside looked at us seriously when they went past. But then, with a kind smile they asked us to follow their car through the busy traffic. The police car stopped at our village church(教堂). One of the officers came to me.

“Right, sir,” he said. “Do you need any more help now?”

I didn’t quite understand. “Thanks, officer,” I said. “You’ve been very kind. I live just down the road.”

He was looking at our things: first at the flowers, then at the bookshelf. “Well, well,” he said and laughed. “It’s a bookshelf you’ve got there! We thought it was--er, something else.”

A friend of mine was fond of drawing horse. He drew the horses very well, but he always began the tail. Now it is the Western rule to begin at the head of the horse, that is why I was surprised. It struck me that it could not really make any difference whether the artist begins at the head or the tail or the belly(肚子) or the foot of the horse, if he really knows his business. And most great artists who really know their business do not follow other people's rule. They make their own rules. Every one of them does his work in a way peculiar(奇特的) to himself; and the peculiarity means only that he finds it more easy
to work in that way.

Now the very same thing is true to literature(文学). And the question, "How shall I begin?" only means that you want to begin at the head instead of beginning at the tail or somewhere else. That is, you are not yet experienced(有经验的) enough to trust to your own powers. When you become more experienced you will
never ask the question, and I think that you will often begin at the tail --that is to say, you will write the end of the story before you have even thought of the beginning.

   1. A friend of the writer's drew the horses ____.

    A. very well

    B. in the way of western rule

    C. in the way of his own rule

    D. all of the above

    A. the artist began to draw at the head of the horse

    B. the artist began to draw at the tail of the horse

    C. the artist made his own rule

    D. the artist did not follow other people's rule
  3. You are not yet experienced because ____.

    A. you don't know where to begin

    B. you want to begin at the head instead of beginning at the tail

    C. you always asked question

    D. you do not trust to your own powers
  4. When you become more experienced you will ____.

    A. never ask question

    B. often begin at the tail

    C. should write the end of the story

    D. should think of the beginning

   5. The topic of the passage is ______.

    A. How to draw a horse

Usually he said nothing, but once I heard him say, “I love you very much, Edith. I would love more if you buttered my bread on both sides. ” He read the paper all through breakfast.

Two knocks on the table meant “I am ready for my tea. ” If a single knock followed that meant, “More bread, please. ”

After breakfast he said, “Boots. ”The paper was spread(展开) for him over the back of an arm-chair. Yesterday's paper was put on the chair for his feet, and his boots were brought to him, freshly cleaned. He read standing at the same time putting on his boots. With one boot finished he said, “Bus. ” At that point one of the girls went outside to the garden gate and waited there. Her job was to stop bus when it came. If you do not use your arm or your legs for some time, they become weak; when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory(记忆力) works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. If you are in a town in a western, country, you'll often see people walking with their dogs. Long , long ago, a man met a dog and wanted it to help him fight other animals, and he found that the dog listened to him and did what he told it to. Later people used dogs for hunting(打猎) of other animals, and the dog didn't eat what they got until their master(主人) agreed. So dogs were used for driving sheep and guarding chickens. But now people in the towns and cities do not need dogs to fight other animals. They keep them to frighten thieves, but the most important reason is that people feel lonely in the city. “Tipping(给小费)”is always a difficult business. You do not want to give too much or too little, or tip the wrong person.

In Britain and America, people usually tip waiters in restaurants, porters, taxi drivers and hairdressers. They do not tip people in offices, cinemas, garages, or airports.

Do you invite your friend to the restaurant? Then you pay the bill. Does your friend invite you? Your friend pays. If there are men and women in the party, the men usually pay.

These days, men and women are equal in many ways. If you work in Britain or America, your boss could be a man or a woman. There are increasing numbers of women in important positions in politics, law, medicine and in the business world.

A friend of mine was fond of drawing horse. He drew the horses very well,
but he always began the tail. Now it is the Western rule to begin at the head
of the horse, that is why I was surprised. It struck me that it could not really
make any difference whether the artist begins at the head or the tail or the
belly(
肚子) or the foot of the horse, if he really knows his business. And most
great artists who really know their business do not follow other people's rule.
They make their own rules. Every one of them does his work in a way peculiar(
奇特的) to himself; and the peculiarity means only that he finds it more easy
to work in that way.
Now the very same thing is true to literature(
文学). And the question, "How shall
I begin?" only means that you want to begin at the head instead of beginning
at the tail or somewhere else. That is, you are not yet experienced(
有经验的

never ask the question, and I think that you will often begin at the tail --
that is to say, you will write the end of the story before you have even thought

       Communication
You speak, write a letter, make a telephone call. Your words carry a message.
People communicate with words.
Do you think you can communicate without words? A smile on your face shows
you are happy or friendly. Tears in your eyes tell others that you are sad.
When you raise your hand in class, the teacher knows you want to say something
or ask questions. You shake your head, and people know you are saying "No".
You nod and people know you are saying "Yes".
Other things can also carry messages. For example, a sign at the bus stop
helps you to know which bus to take. A sign on the wall of your school helps
you to find the library. Signs on doors tell you where to go in or out. Have
you ever noticed that there are a lot of signs around you and that you receive
messages from them all the time?
People can communicate in many other ways. An artist can use his drawings
to tell about beautiful mountains, about the blue sea and many other things.
Books are written to tell you about all the wonderful things in the world and
also about people and their ideas.
Books, magazines, TV and radios and films all help us to communicate with
each other. They all help us to know what is going on in the world and what
other people are thinking about.

     Weather and Men
Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it. It is
true. People usually begin their talks with "Isn't it a nice day?" "Do you think
it will rain?" "What a fine day!" etc.
Many people think they can tell what the weather is going to be like. But
they hardly agree with each other. One man may say, "Do you see how cloudy it
is in the east? It's going to rain tomorrow." Another man will say, "No, it's
going to be fine tomorrow."
People often look for the weather they want. When a farmer needs water, he
looks for something to tell him it's going to rain; he won't believe anything
else. When friends have a travel, they are sure the weather is goint to clear
up very quickly.
Almost everyone listens to what the weather man says. But he doesn't always
tell us what we want, and once in a while he makes a mistake. Still, he probably
comes closer to being correct than anyone else.

Memory
A good memory is a great help in learning a language. Everybody learns his
own language by remembering what he hears when he is a small child, and some
children - like boys and girls who live abroad with their parents - seem to
learn two languages almost as easily as one. In school it is not easy to learn
a second language because the pupils have so little time for it, and they are
busy with other subjects, too.
A man's mind is rather like a camera, but it takes photos not only of what
we see but of what we feel, hear, smell and taste. When we take a real photo
with a camera, there is much to do before the photo is finished and ready to
show to our friends. In the same way there is much work to be done before we
can keep a picture forever in our mind.
Memory is the diary that we all carry about with us.

Oil
Almost everyone in the world uses oil in some way. Cars, buses, planes and
many trains and ships also need oil. Even our bicycles need oil. Indeed the
whole world would stop if there was no oil.
Today there is a growing need for oil in the world. So people are looking
for it everywhere. They look for oil in deserts, in the mountains and under
the sea. Quite often they find nothing, but the search for oil always goes on.
What are the largest oil producers in the world? The U.S, the U.S.S.R., and
countries of the Middle East. But China is catching up fast. Before liberation
we used to buy nearly all our oil from the U.S. Many foreign people said China
was "oil-poor". But since liberation oil has been found in many parts of the
country. Today everyone agrees that China is rich in oil. Our oil will not only
meet the great need in our country, but also be sold to other countries.

Mr.Smith gave his wife money every Friday evening. His

wife always spent it all before the next Wednesday,so that

for the next three days she had no money to spend at all.

One day Mr.Smith asked her,"But how did you spend all

that money?"She answered,"I don't know."

So one Friday evening,Mr.Smith gave her money together

with an exercise book and a pencil. He said to his wife,"

Please write down how you spend the money."

Next Tuesday, his wife had no money again.Mr.Smith took

the exercise book to see how she had spent it."I have done

second page, she wrote,"Tuesday,I have spent it all."
