When you go to the doctors, you often have your eyesight checked. The doctor makes you read a chart with big and small “E”s on it.

Do you know where that chart came from?

It”s called the Snellen Chart. It was made by Herman Snellen, a Dutch(荷兰的)doctor, in 1863.

When reading the chart, you should stand five metres away from it. Your eyes should also be at the same height as the 10th line of letters.

You should then read the letters from the top line to the bottom line. The letters get smaller as they get nearer the bottom.

Doctors can find out if you are short-sighted, long-sighted, or if you have good eyesight, by seeing what lines you can read.

If your doctor thinks you need glasses, they”ll tell you to go to hospital to get some.

Think about the place you live. It may be a small house or a large apartment. You may find it ugly or beautiful. Now think of a building that has caught your eye. Something about that building”s appearance must have impressed(给……留下印象)you. Houses, apartment buildings, and shopping malls all have one thing in common. An architect(建筑师)probably decided how they would look and be built.

What do architects do? They don”t actually build buildings. Contractors are responsible for(对……负责)that. But they do design(设计)them. They draw the plans to show the size of floors and the height of rooms. They decide where doors and windows will go. They choose the materials for the outside walls and the roof. They may draw a model on a computer so people can see what it will look like. Small, simple buildings are not always designed by architects. But larger, more complex ones nearly always are.

When did people first start using architects? Clearly, early people put together their own houses. They used whatever materials they had. Some houses were square. They were made of wood and covered with skins. Some were round and made of stone. But all had small rooms, low ceilings(天花板), and few windows. No one knew how to build a structure with large openings. They didn”t know how to support high, wide ceilings.

The earliest architect we know about lived in ancient Egypt(古埃及). His name was Lmhotep. He lived about 2700 B.C. He designed the first pyramid(金字塔). Buildings today, of course, look very different. But architects have kept on learning and trying new designs.

55. An architect”s work is ___________.

A. to draw a picture of the building

B. to decide how the building will be built

C. to show where the doors and windows will go

D. to tell the contractors the size of the floors and the height of the rooms

56. The underlined word “complex” means __________.

A. large B. beautiful C. not simple D. not modern

57. What does the writer write the article for?

A. To tell us the difference between architects and contractors.

B. To give us some common knowledge of the architect.

C. To introduce the history of the architect.

D. To explain why the early buildings were simple structures.

When you turn on the TV today you see shows about black families. There are also movies and plays about African-American life. You may think that there are not enough of any of these. But there was a time when things were worse.

When A Raisin in the Sun opened on Broadway(百老汇)in 1959, it was the first time a play by an African-American woman had ever played there. Its writer was Lorraine Hansberry. She would also become the first black to win the New York Drama Critics Circle Award.

Hansberry”s play was based on her own life. She grew up in Chicago in a well-off family. But the family had trouble when they tried to move into a white neighbourhood. Segregation(隔离)was common in all cities at that time. Hansberry”s parents had money. They were well-educated. But they were still not accepted(接受).

In the play, Mama Younger buys a home in a white neighbourhood. She uses money from her dead husband”s life insurance policy(保险). Soon after, a white man comes and offers to buy them out. He offers them “financial gain” to keep the neighbourhood segregated. At first, the family angrily refuses. But later mama”s son Walter think about the offer again. His business is doing badly, and he needs the money to keep it going. Will he allow(允许)the family to be bribed(贿赂)like this? Or will they be able to keep their piece of the American dream?

Hansberry died of cancer(癌症)at age 34. But she had written an important play. A Raisin in the Sun gave a realistic picture of African-American struggles. It gave white people something to think about. And it gave hope to a whole new group of black actors and writers.
