The summer vacation is over. It’s true that time always flew fast.
During the vacation, the weather was hot and I could not do much work, but I lived happily.
As the afternoon was hot, I did my work in the morning. I used to get up at 6:30 and take a walk in the garden for half an hour. After breakfast, I began reading English and Chinese and did some exercises in maths. These would take me three hours or more. I worked quite hard and I believe I made good progress.
I spent the afternoon outside. I went to swim and it was full of fun. I would not go home until it was late at about five or six o’clock. Sometimes a friend of mine would come to see me and we would spend some hours listening to music.
In this way I spent my vacation happily. And I not only studied well but also became a good swimmer. Now I am in good health and high spirits.

Geoffrey Payne talks for the first time about the night his wife was killed. The judge thought it was he who killed his wife. Now he wrote to a magazine from the prison(监狱) about what happened on the night of 13 October 1999.
I had to stay late at the hospital that night to do an operation. I finally left at about 11 p.m. I drove home slowly because the weather was terrible— the wind was blowing and it was raining heavily. I was turning into our road when a man suddenly ran in front of my car. I almost hit him but I stopped just in time. I was frightened and the man looked frightened too. I got out of the car but he ran away before I could ask if he was all right. It was very strange.
When I got home, the lights were on but it was very quiet. I called to my wife but there was no answer. Then I remembered that she was out at a concert.
I was still very upset about what happened on the road, so I made myself a drink. Then I went upstairs to have a bath. I saw that the window in the bedroom was open. This was strange because my wife always locked the doors and windows before she went out. She was afraid of burglars (夜盗者). When I went to close it, I found Ellen. She was lying on the floor. There was blood everywhere. I rushed over and felt for her pulse but she was dead. I sat on the floor beside her body and was too frightened to do anything.
The next thing I knew, the sky was getting light. I can’t remember a thing about that night. In the morning I phoned the police. They arrived about half an hour after I phoned them. But it seemed like hours. During that time I tried hard to remember anything I could about the night before. I couldn’t stop thinking about the man on the road. What was he doing at that time of night in our quiet neighborhood? Why did he look so frightened? Why did he run away?

Sometimes, older minds can be as bright as young minds. Alice Brophy once said, “It makes me unhappy when people say, ‘You look young for your age.’ What does that mean? You know you can die old at 30 and live young at 80.”

第一段材料:
When John was a child, all the men in his village wore red hats. John was not yet old enough to have a hat, and he was always hoping that his father would buy him one.
One day, John’s father told him that he could go with him to the big market in the next village. Together they put four bags of rice on a horse, and soon they were walking down the road to the east.
When they reached the village, the market was crowded with people and animals. John’s father sold his rice soon after he and John arrived at the market.
The father and the son then went to several shops to buy things that were needed at home. There were many things to buy, and John was happy that his father had taken him along. The market was full of interesting things and sounds, and John enjoyed looking at everything. He had forgotten about the red hat, but his father had not, “Now John, ” he said, “there is one more thing we have to buy.” They went down a street and stopped in front of a hat shop. John’s father asked the shopkeeper to bring out a hat for his son. John was too happy to say a word. Then John’s father took a red hat and put it on his son’s head. “John,” he said, “now you are a man.”

…Most of the students will go to their classmates or friends when in trouble because they’re almost of the same age, they can talk with, communicate with and understand each other easily. Some students will tell their teachers or parents about their troubles as the teachers and parents have rich experience and love them very much. They can be trusted by these students. Only a few students solve their problems all by themselves. They hate to talk with others and can’t get on well with others. They have few friends.
In my opinion, when in trouble we’d better ask our teachers, parents, friends or classmates for help.
