AHundreds of years ago, life was much harder than it is today. People didn’t have modern machines. There was no modern medicine, either.

Life today has brought new problems. One of the biggest is pollution. Water pollution has made our rivers and lakes dirty. It kills our fish and polluted our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us talk louder and become angry more easily. Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution. It’s bad to all living things in the world.

Cars, planes and factories all pollute our air every day. Sometimes the polluted air is so thick that it is like a quilt over a city. This kind of quilt is called smog.

Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. Factories must now clean their water before it is thrown away, they mustn’t blow dirty smoke into the air.

We need to do many other things. We can put waste things in the dustbin and not throw it on the ground. We can go to work by bus or with our friends in the same car. If there are fewer people driving, there will be less pollution.

Rules are not enough. Every person must help to fight pollution.

( ) 1. Hundreds of years ago, life was much harder than it is today because _______.

 A. there were not any modern machines B. there was no modern medicine

 C. both A and B              D. there were not many people

 ( ) 2. What is the biggest problem in today’s life? ___________.

 A. Water pollution B. Air pollution

 C. Noise D. Pollution

( ) 3. The most serious kind of pollution is ________.

 A. noise pollution B. air pollution

 C. water pollution D. A, B and C

 ( ) 4. Factories must clean their water ________.

 A. before they are thrown away       B. when they are thrown away

 C. after it is thrown away D. before it is thrown away

( ) 5. From the passage we know that ________.

 A. a few years ago, there was no smog at all

 B. today people don’t have to talk to each other in a loud voice

 C. we can drink water from the polluted rivers and lakes

D. people are making rules in order to fight pollution

BThe giraffe is the tallest modern land animal. It can be over 5.5meters tall. Its neck alone may be 1.9 meters long. Yet the giraffe has only seven bones in its neck, the same number as in the human. Even a small bird has many more bones in its neck than in a tall giraffe. Each bone in a giraffe’s neck is very long, while the bones in a human neck are small. That makes the difference. A female(雌的)giraffe gives birth to one baby at a time. The baby called a calf, is about1.9 meters tall at birth. By the age eight it is full-grown. The giraffe eats mostly leaves. Because it has a long neck, it can reach the leaves high up on the tree.

( )1. In this passage the underlined word “giraffe” means_______.

A.鲸鱼         B.长颈鹿       C.大象        D.恐龙

( )2. The bones in a bird’s neck is____.

A. as big as a human’s neck B. not so big as in a giraffe’s neck

C. many more than in a human’s neck D. much longer than in a giraffe’s neck

( )3. Which of the following is true? _____________

A. A giraffe has only seven bones.

B. The giraffe is the largest animal on the land

C. It takes eight years for a giraffe to grow up.

D. Most of the leaves on the trees are eaten by giraffes.

( )4. When a giraffe is born, it is about_______.

A.5.5 meters long     B.5.5 meters tall   C.1.9 meters long D.1.9 meters tall

( )5. We can guess when a giraffe sees a tiger _____.

A. It will run as fast as possible

B. It will run to eat the tiger

C. It will make the tiger bring it something to eat

D. It will make one of the smallest animals bring the tiger something to eat

CIf you are lucky enough, you may find the hummingbird(蜂鸟), the smallest bird of the animal world, in a south American forest.

Though the hummingbird is no bigger than a bee and weighs only 2 to 3 grams, it can fly as fast as 50 metres in a second. It can fly forwards as most birds do, and it can fly backwards as well. The strangest thing about it, however, is that it can stay still in the air, just like a helicopter(直升飞机).

Whenever a hummingbird needs food, it will fly slowly towards a flower. It won’t stand on the flower, as bees would, but just hangs to the flower and then begins to sunk(吸吮) the honey from inside the flower.

The hummingbird is very particular in building its nest(巢). It takes great trouble to choose material, preferring soft ones to hard ones. Its eggs are so small that a common match box can hold as many as one hundred of them..

( )1.The passage suggests______.

A. people can easily find a hummingbird.

B. there are hummingbirds all over the world.

C. not many people are lucky in seeing a hummingbird.

D. the hummingbird can fly faster than any other bird.

( )2.In what a different way does a hummingbird fly from other birds?  _______

A. It can fly as fast as a helicopter. B. It can keep still in the sky.

C. It can fly forwards and backwards. D. Both B and C.

( )3.Which of the following will a hummingbird choose to build its nest?  ________.

A. Cotton      B. Earth      C. Wood      D. Stone

( )4. The underline wood “particular” most probably means______.

A. strange-looking B. very exact C. hard to satisfy D. quite careless

( )5. What can be inferred from the passage? ____________

A. The hummingbird feeds itself as a bee does.

B. The hummingbird is careful with its home.

C. The hummingbird cannot just fly forward but also backward.

D. The hummingbird lays eggs in match boxes.

DI often heard or read about natural disasters-the eruption(爆发)of Mount St. Helens; a volcano(火山)in the state of Washington; Hurricane(飓风)Andrew in Florida; the floods in the American Midwest; terrible earthquakes all over the world; huge firs; and so on. But I’ll never forget my first personal experience with the strangeness of nature-the “London Killer fog” of 1952.It began on Thursday, December 4, when a warm air covered southern England. With the freezing–cold air below, a heavy fog formed. Pollution from factories, cars, and coal stoves mixed with the fog. The humidity was terribly high, and there was no breeze(微风)at all. Traffic stopped. People couldn’t see, and some walked onto the railroad tracks or into the river. It was hard to breathe, and many people got sick.

Finally on Tuesday, December 9, the winds came and the fog went away. But after that, even more people got sick. Many of them died.

Dialogue 2:

W: Tom, what do you think of zoos?

W: I disagree with you. I feel that zoos provide clean and safe places for endangered animals.

M: But I feel that zoos are terrible places for animals to live. I’ve never visited one zoo that was suitable for animals to live in.

W: But why don’t we think of other ways which both support our zoos to change the living conditions of the animals and educate the public about caring for them?

M: Good idea.

第三节 听短文,回答问题

Dear editor(编辑),

I live in a beautiful city. Many visitors come to my city. There are so many colorful pigeons here.

The pigeons mostly live on the grass land of Culture Square. They are given food freely by visitors. They usually throw food to them, and don’t think about at all whether the food is right or not. Some of the pigeons became ill, some even died after eating the bad food given by the visitors.

I’m sure most of the visitors who throw food to the pigeons really like the birds, but don’t realize that they may be doing them harm.

The visitors should be told that what they have done is very harmful to the birds, and this kind of thing must be stopped from happening.

Perhaps we can build some small shops beside Culture Square to sell pigeon food. For us every person, it is our duty to give more love to these lovely birds and to look after them carefully.

                         Yours,

Li Dan

One day, when Xiao Ming was on his way home, he saw a bird singing in a tree. He was very glad. He thought if he caught it, he would take it home and put it in his cage. So he picked up a stone and threw it at the bird. The bird was badly hurt and fell off the tree. Just then an old man came up to Xiao Ming and told him not to kill birds again.
