Football is one of the most popular sports in the world. Interesting and exciting, football is popular among _1 tens_ of millions of people all over the world.

I am a football fan. I began _2_to watch__ football games when the league football match first _3_took_ place in China. _4_From then on, I became interested in football. In the match, I enjoy the wonderful goal shootings, the great teamwork between the players. Also the 5_players_ courage and endurance(勇气和耐力) can 6_be found_ in the match. The _7_most interesting_ thing is that even until last minute of the match can anyone hardly tell the result, _8_for__ anything can happen.

The world cup is 9_held every four years. It draws a lot of interest when teams from different 10_countries begin to fight for the world cup. In the match, many football fans make friends with one another and know different things of other countries. 11_So football match _12_isn’t_ simply a match, it’s an exchange of culture.(文化交流)

To support(支持) your favourite football team on the sport _13_feels so good. To support 14_our national team on the spot to fight for the world cup is the hope of all the Chinese football fans. What we_15_did/ have done is great, what we will do will be greater.

Radio and television 1_are_very popular in the world today. _2_Millions of people watch TV. Perhaps much _3_more_ people listen to the radio.

The TV is, of course, 4_more useful than radio. On the TV you can see and hear what 5_is going on in the world.

But radio is not disappearing(消失). It is still _6 with_ us. And the number of 7_listeners_ is becoming larger. One reason(原因) for this is the 8_invention of the transistor(晶体管) radio. A transistor radio is sometimes very small. It is very easy 9 to carry_. You can put one in your pocket _10_and_ listen to it on the bus or on your bike when you go to work. Besides(除此之外) radios are _11 good/better for blind people. The eyes of many old people are not good enough _12_to watch_ TV. Then when people are working, they can’t watch TV. _13_But they can listen to the _14_music or the news over the radio. What’s more, radio is much _15_cheaper_ than TV.

One day James Watt was sitting at the fire in _his__ grandmother’s home. He was watching the fire _and thinking about things. A teapot was over the fire. Soon the lid(盖子) began to move up and down.

“What makes it move up and down?” the boy asked himself. He looked under the lid, but he _couldn’t_ see anything.

“Grandma, what’s in the teapot?” he asked. “Water, my child-nothing _but_ water.”

“But I know there is something more. And what makes the lid up and down?”

His grandmother laughed and _said_. “Oh, that’s only steam(蒸汽). You can see it __coming_ out of teapot”. “Why my dear, it comes out of the hot water. The hot water makes it.” The grandmother began to think that the boy _was asking_ too many questions.

“The steam must be very strong _to make_ the heavy lid move up and down” said the bright boy to _himself_. “Well, if the steam comes from a lot of water it must be much _stronger_. Why can’t we use steam to work for us?” The _idea grew with him as he grew up. He tried out his idea and failed, then tried again failed again. But each time he learned something _new_. Some people laughed at him.

_Don’t_ be foolish(愚蠢的)”,they said. But he went on _trying_ and at last he reached his goal and gave the world the __first_ team engine(蒸汽机)

A grown-up(成人) person has ten or eleven pints(品脱) of blood(血) inside his or 1_her_ body. We can lose a pint of blood without 2_feeling anything, but if we lose a lot of blood, we feel weak and cold. Our 3_faces become pale(苍白的). We may 4_die_

This is what often happens when somebody is hurt in 5_an_ accident, or a soldier(士兵) is hurt in a battle(战斗中). Many people used to die in this way. But nowadays(现今) they can be taken to hospitals and 6_given more blood. Almost at once they feel better. Their faces are no _7 longer pale. They do not die.

Where does this blood come from? People who are 8_healthy_ give some blood so that it can be used in this way. Every three months they go to a place where blood is collected. A special kind of needle(针) is put into the 9_arm_. It does not hurt. The blood runs _10_through_the needle and through a rubber tube into the bottle. Blood is taken in this way. Then the person who has given the blood _11_drinks  a cup of tea or coffee. He sits down for a few minutes. Then he feels quite well and goes off. Three months later he comes back and gives another pint.

A person who gives blood in this way feels happy. He knows that his blood will be used to save _12_someone’s life. Perhaps one day he _13_himself_ will need blood.

When you are older, you may decide to give blood 14_in_ this way. But you _15_can’t_ do this until you are eighteen.

The Americans think a lot about time. Even from as a child they learn 1_to save_ time. As children, they 2_are taught to be on time to go to school, to do work and to do everything. _3 When they are having a good time, they say that time _4_flies_. When a person 5_is dying_, they say he is living on borrowed _6_time_.

Time is money. Time is knowledge. Time is everything in America. A _7_working_ American has forty 8_hours’_ work a week. This is the working time. In his spare(业余的) time, he also works hard for _9_more_ money. Even Saturdays and Sundays_10_are filled with something to do. He enjoys 11_himself_ all the time. In the street you can 12_hardly see a man who walks 13_slowly. They walk very fast. Or we may say they are running.

They love time 14_because time brings them money, happiness and everything. But sometimes they also hate time, for they feel they _15_are/have been_ slaves(奴隶)of the clock.

Florence Nightingale was born in 1820. At that time, hospitals were not as good as they are now. When she was a little girl, she liked 1_to visit__ the poor people near her house and looked after them _2_when_ they were ill. She wanted very much 3_to be_ a nurse, _4_but_ her father told her that nursing wasn’t the right work for a young madam. “But I 5_will try_”, she said with a smile. As her father had plenty of money, he let Florence _6_travel_ to many other countries. He hoped that she would forget about being a nurse.

But Florence _7_did_ not forget. When she went to France and Germany, she visited hospitals. She worked in them and learned all she could. When she returned to England, Florence started a nursing school of her own for 8_women_.

_9_During the war in 1854, many soldiers were wounded and became ill. More nurses 10_were needed_. Florence went with thirty-eight nurses to a hospital near the front. When they arrived there, she found the thing was much _11_worse__. She and her nurses _12_had___to work hard. Florence herself worked harder than anybody else. She and her nurses saved hundreds of _13_soldiers’ lives.

Florence fell ill because she had kept _14_working_ too hard for a very long time. On August 13,1910, Florence Nightingale 15_died_ quietly in her sleep.
