Ⅳ.阅读理解(共20题,计20分)

  (A)

Sometimes people add to what they say even when they don’t talk. Gestures are the “silent language” of every culture. We point a finger or move another part of the body to show what we want to say. It is important to know the body language of every country, or we may be misunderstood.

In the United States, people greet each other with a handshake in a formal introduction. The handshake must be firm. If the handshake is weak, it is a sign of weakness or unfriendliness. Friends may place a hand on the other’s arm or shoulder. Some people, usually women , greet a friend with a hug.

Space is important to Americans. When two people talk to each other, they usually stand about two and a half feet away and at an angle, so they are not facing each other directly. Americans get uncomfortable when a person stands too close. They will move back to have their space. If Americans touch person by accident, they say “Pardon me” or “Excuse me”.

Americans like to look at the other in the eyes when they are talking. If you don’t do so, it means you are bored, hiding something, or are not interested, but when you stare at someone, it is not polite.

For Americans, thumbs-up means yes, very good, or well done. Thumbs-down means the opposite. To call a waiter, raise one hand to head level or above. To show you want the check, make a movement with your hands as if you are signing a piece of paper. It is all right to point at things but not at people  with the hand and index finger(食指). Americans shake their index finger at children when they scold them and pat them on the head when they admire them.

Learning a culture’s body language is sometimes confusing(困惑的).If you don’t know what to do, the safest thing to do is smile.

  66. From the first paragraph we can learn that _________.

68.In the United States, people often ________.

  A. show their friendship by touching each other

The doctor pointed to some bones on his desk. “They are a man’s foot bones,” he said. “They were found deep inside the cave, and I have been examining them. The C14 test shows that they are about 12,000 years old.”

“What is the C14 test?” I asked. “It’s a way of finding the age of some things that had been done long ago. The “C” means carbon and carbon is found in all living things. It is also found in the remains of things that lived and died thousands or millions of years ago. Plants and animals take carbon into their bodies from the air and in their food. It stays in their remains.”

“Well, there are two kinds of carbon, called carbon 12(C12) and carbon 14 (C14). Both are taken in together, but in living things C12 is one trillion (1012) times more plentiful(大量的) than C14. The two kinds are different in one important aspect.”

“C14 is radioactive(放射性的):it gives out rays of energy at a fixed frequency(频率). As it does so, it changes to C12 in 5,600 years. Then in the next 5,600 years, half of the remaining C14 becomes C12 and so on. We say that C14 has a half-life(半衰期) of 5,600 years.”

“You must have found some C14in these bones, then,” I said.

“Yes, I did. But the C12 is now four million times more plentiful. About a quarter of the C14 is left. That means near enough, that two half-lives have passed.” The doctor picked up one of the brown toe bones. “It’s 12,000 years since this toe was kicking about. And the man broke it once. Perhaps he was playing football outside ---with no boots on.”

One day Xiao Gang and his sister were on their way to school when they saw an old woman walking in front of them, she was crying a basket full of oranges.

Suddenly the old woman stepped on a piece of banana skin and fell to the ground. Her basket dropped and the oranges came out of it. When Xiao Gang and his sister saw what had happened, they ran to help the old woman. Xiao Gang helped the granny to her feet while his sister picked up the oranges and put them back into the basket.

The old woman thanked the two children, praising them for being so kind and helpful to the old.
