Kang-a-roo

Early in the 18th century. Captain Cook. a famous explorer of Australia. unexpectedly(意外地) caught sight of an unusual animal during his first visit to Australia . The animal had a large mouse like head and jumped along on its large legs.   To his great surprise. the unusual animal carried its young in a special pocket of flesh.  Captain Cook pointed to the animal which was eating grass in the distance and  asked his native guide what the animal was referred to.  The guide seemed not to know what he was pointing at and finally said “Kang-a-roo”, which Cook carefully  wrote down as the animal's name in his word book.  The Europeans who later got to Australia were anxious to see the unusual animal “Kang-a-roo”, but their requests were met with puzzled(迷惑) looks of the native people.  Before long they got to discover that the native guide who made.  Before long they got to discover that the native guide who made the answer to Cook's question really meant, “I don't know what you are pointing at. ”Funny enough. the name “Kang-a-roo” stuck and it is still in use today.

怎样写科普短文

科普文章实属一种说明文体裁。它要真实于科学,不能虚构。根据书面材料要求,一一说明 清楚即可。用英语写说明文,要注意如下几点:

一、特征要抓住

说明某事物,就必须从某物的特征入手。例如:颜色、大小、高矮、胖瘦、形状、形态、性质、性能、习性、原理、作用、用途、功能、危害、影响、结构、操作、程序、发生、发展的规律等。

二、层次要分明

说明某物,可从上至下,从前到后,由里到外,由主到次或先因后果。

三、解析要清楚

对某一事物的说明,要表达清清楚楚。例如写长城就得从长城的位置、历史、起因、构造、 修造过程以及现在状况等方面入手。

四、表现手法要多样化

说明某一事物,可以运用比喻手段,如拟人或拟物。如高中课本里把蚁窝比作“蚁城”(acuity of ant people);把蚂蚁称作为“蚁民”(ant people);把专管食物的蚂蚁称为“工蚁”(the workers);把专管保育幼蚁的称为“保育蚁”(nurses);将蚁城统治者称为“蚁后”(the queen)。

五、用词要力求准确

引用的数据要绝对可靠。文字要精练。如高中课本中的The Tallest Grass,称竹子为最高 的草。①突出“高”;②突出它是一种“草”。

六、时态语态要选好

科普文章大都使用一般现在被动语态。
