Today, roller skating is easy and fun.But a long time ago, it wasn’t easy at all. Before 1750, the idea of skating didn’t exist. That changed because of a man named Joseph Merlin. Merlin’s work was making musical instruments. In his spare time he liked to play the violin. Joseph Merlin was a man of ideas and dreams. People called him a dreamer.

One day Merlin received an invitation to attend a fancy dress ball(化装舞会). He was very pleased and a little excited. As the day of the party came near, Merlin began to think how to make a grand entrance at the party. He had an idea. He thought he would get a lot of attention if he could skate into the room.

Merlin tried different ways to make himself roll. Finally, he decided to put two wheels under each shoe. These were the first roller skates. Merlin was very proud of his invention and dreamed of arriving at the party on wheels while playing the violin.

On the night of the party Merlin rolled into the room playing his violin. Everyone was astonished to see him. There was just one problem. Merlin had no way to stop his roller skates. Most of us have formed an unrealistic(不现实的) picture of life on a desert island. We sometimes imagine a desert island to be a sort of paradise(天堂) where the sun always shines. Life there is simple and good.Ripe fruit falls from the trees and you never have to work. The other side of the picture is quite the opposite. Life on a desert island is poor. You either starve to death or live like Robinson Crusoe, waiting for a boat which never comes. Perhaps there is an element of truth in both these pictures, but few of us have had the opportunity to find out.

Two men who recently spent five days on a coral island wished they had stayed there longer. They were taking a badly damaged boat from the Virgin Islands to Miami to have it repaired. During the journey, their boat began to sink. They quickly loaded a small life raft with food, matches, and tins of beer and rowed for a few miles across the Caribbean until they arrived at a tiny coral island. There were hardly any trees on the island and there was no water, but this did not prove to be a problem. The men collected rain-water in the life raft. As they had brought a spear gun with them, they had plenty to eat. They caught lobster and fish every day, and, as one of them put it ‘ate like kings’. When a passing tanker rescued them five days later, both men were really sorry that they had to leave.

Text 10

An old friend of mine from Canada telephoned from the airport to tell me that he had arrived. I was still at the office at that time. I told him where my house was and I had left the key under

the door. I asked him to make himself at home.

Two hours later, I telephoned him. He told me he couldn't find the key under the door, but he had no difficulty in finding my house, because the window of my living room was just by the apple tree, and he had climbed in.

I was surprised. There is no apple tree in front of my living room, but there is one in front of my neighbor's.

Seven Swords

Last Sunday evening. We saw a film in our school. It’s a real blockbuster whose name is Seven Swords.

Seven Swords is the latest production of Xu Ke, who is one of the most famous directors in Hongkong. It’s an action film , also we can call it a historical film. There are many famous actors in the film, such as Zhen Zidan, Li Ming, Yang Caini and so on. I think their performances are pretty good and wonderful. The story took place in the northwest of China in the 17th century. It tells us that many heroes fought with the government army for the people’s happiness and freedom, and at last they won.

I think this film is very good. It’s one of my unforgettable experiences.
