What should you talk about once you've started a conversation?

One of the most common topics is the weather. Everyone talks about the weather.

For example, “It’s so cold outside.” or “Today is very hot , isn’t it?”

The weather is a very common topic and so is the family when you talk with foreign people. You could ask an English-speaking foreigner, “How is your family?” or “Do you have family here in Beijing?” It is not a private topic. It is a perfect topic to talk about with friends.

Another topic that is very popular is news or sports. And if you are men, they love to talk about sports. Anything about basketball, football and baseball is a good thing to talk about when you are trying to make a conversation.

There is a difference between Chinese-speakers and English-speakers about conversation topics. They don't talk about food very much. The only time you would really discuss food is if you are eating it or you are just about to go to eat it. So there has never been such a question as “Have you eaten any food?” or so in English. You had better not ask about anyone’s eating or food for today on a conversation.

Another way of making a conversation in English is for two persons to discuss another person they have in common. Maybe I don't know Elny very well but we both have a good friend.

We would often say that “She is so wonderful, she is so sweet, she is so good with her children”. In English, there is no other meaning. It means we have this nice friend and we both like her. Though in Chinese it can be more complicated(复杂的). Maybe if I said Susan was nice, Rebecca might think “Oh, what is she saying about me?” “Am I not good with my children?”

In English the topic about Elny or for our friend Susan is just a topic about someone we know and we both like. It’s a very common way to have a conversation to talk about another person. There is no other meaning, just a topic of conversation like the weather.

65.People often talk about the weather when .

A. they don't know what to talk about

B. they have nothing to talk about

C. they feel it difficult to go on a talk

D. they hope to go on talking

66. When you are having a conversation with a woman English-speaker, you will talk about .

.  A. football or news in England       B. a person that you want to know

  C. something both of you are interested in   D. the food you want for today

67. In the passage, the underlined name Rebecca should be       .

A. a Chinese lady with an English name

B. an English lady common in England

C. another person you both know well

D. a person you are talking about

68. If you would like to have a talk with an English-speaker, you’d better NOT say “ ?”.

A. it’s a lovely day, isn’t it

B. did you watch the football match yesterday

C. what did you have as your breakfast today

D. how many children do you have

69. From the passage we can see that       .

A. it’s a perfect topic for Chinese speakers to talk about a person you both know

well

B. it is not a perfect topic for English speakers to talk about a Chinese person

C. in China people do not talk about a person as much as in England

D. in England people think it more complicated to talk about a person they both know

C

Does eating a good breakfast improve school study? A study of more than 1000 pupils in the

city of Lawrence suggests it does.

Youngsters who took part in the breakfast program improved their scores in the tests much

more than those who didn’t. And much fewer were found skipping their classes.

Starting the day with a meal “appears to be quite helpful,” says Amy Sampson, a researcher

professor, who carried out the experiment on the students for a year, and found the result quite pleasing. He was very glad that many other schools would join in the program.

Children who miss breakfast may not get important nourishment(营养) in fruit,

milk, bread and so on. If your child is in a hurry in the morning, get him some pieces of bread with some fruit or yogurt. In that case, he won’t have to go to the selling machines for some chips or candy bars, and may not get into other health problems.

70.The best title should be _________.

A. What about breakfast? B. Is breakfast good or bad?

C. Breakfast or not? D. What do you eat for breakfast?

71. According to the result of the program, a good breakfast will help the students ________.

  A. to be healthier and stronger

  B. to get more scores in the tests

  C. to become healthier and to get more scores in their tests

  D. to improve both their study and their behavior at school

72.The breakfast program was carried out by _________.

A. the Lawrence City government B. a certain professor from a university

C. the students and their parents    D. a school with more than 1000 students

73.It is good enough for a child to have ________ as his breakfast.

B. some nourishments in fruit and milk

C. some fruit and some chips, candy bars

D. some fast food from the selling machine

Suddenly, a sudden fire broke out in the luggage compartment, and the passenger cabin began to fill with smoke. The cockpit door opened, and the pilot hurried into the passengers’ compartment.

“Gentlemen,” he began, “I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that we’re about to fall down in New Jersey. The good news is that there are four parachutes, and I have one of them!” With that, the pilot threw open the door and jumped out from the plane.

Michael Jordan was on his feet in a flash as quickly as he was with his basketball. “Gentlemen,” he said, “I am the world’s greatest athlete. The world needs great athletes. I think the world’s greatest athlete should have a parachute!” With these words, he took one of the remaining parachutes, and stepped through the door and into the night.

Bill Gates rose and said, “Gentlemen, I am the world’s smartest man. The world needs smart men. I think the world’s smartest man should have a parachute, too.” He took one, and out he jumped.

The Dali Lama and the hippie looked at each other. Finally, the Dali Lama spoke. “My son,” he said, “I have lived a satisfying life and have known the truth about life. You have your life ahead of you; you take a parachute, and I will go down with the plane.”

The hippie smiled slowly and said, “Hey, don’t worry, pop. The world’s smartest man just jumped out wearing my backpack.”

I still remember my middle school life in Tianjin. I was now

in a school for students from Tibet. As we were all left home

at early age, we met lots of problems in our daily life. We

had to do the washing, cleaning and shopping by us. However,

we seldom felt alone and helpless. We enjoyed our happy life.

At weekends, we would play basketball, swimming in the pool

or go for a picnic. We were living in a big family. We treat

each other as brothers and sisters. If any one of us had any

difficulty in our life and study, the other would help him out.

It has been five years when we graduated, but those memories

are as sweet as ever before.
