Friend is better than fortune. Friend is worse than poison in some cases. The two sentences above are opposite and seem to be unreasonable but they can be explained as follows: the first refers to all good friends who drive us towards good while the second all bad ones who lead us to wrong ways.

My ideal(理想的) friend is of course a good friend whose goodness is shown below----- he has no bad likings, such as smoking and drinking. He lives in frugality(节俭). He studies hard so as not to waste his golden time. At home he honors his parents and loves his brothers; at school he respects his teachers and shares feelings of his classmates. He treats those truly who are true to him. In a word, he has all the good characters better than mine. I can follow him as a model. With his help I am free from all difficulties.

Indeed, if I have such a person as my friend, I shall never fear difficulty and I shall never know the existence of the word “failure”.

One of Britain's bravest women told yesterday how she helped to catch suspected (可疑的) police killer David Bieber -- and was thanked with flowers by the police. It was also said that she could be in line for a share of up to £30,000 reward money.

Vicki Brown, 30, played a very important role in ending the nationwide manhunt(追捕). Vicki, who has worked at the Royal Hotel for four years, told of her terrible experience when she had to steal into Bieber's bedroom and to watch him secretly. Then she waited alone for three hours while armed police prepared to storm(突袭) the building.

She said: "I was very nervous. But when I opened the hotel door and saw 20 armed policemen lined up in the car park I was so glad they were there.”

The alarm(警觉) had been raised because Vicki became suspicious (怀疑) of the guest who checked in at 3 pm the day before New Year's Eve with little luggage(行李) and wearing sunglasses and a hat pulled down over his face. She said: "He didn't seem to want to talk too much and make any eye contact (接触)." Vicki, the only employee on duty, called her bosses Margaret, 64, and husband Stan McKale, 65, who phoned the police at 11 pm.

Officers from Northumbria Police called Vicki at the hotel in Dunston, Gateshead, at about 11:30 pm to make sure that this was the wanted man. Then they kept in touch by phoning Vicki every 15 minutes.

"It was about ten past two in the morning when the phone went again and a policeman said ‘Would you go and make yourself known to the armed officers outside?'. My heart missed a beat."

Vicki quietly showed eight armed officers through passages(过道) and staircases to the top floor room and handed over the key.

"I realized that my bedroom window overlooks that part of the hotel, so I went to watch. I could not see into the man's room, but I could see the passage. The police kept shouting at the man to come out with his hands showing. Then suddenly he must have come out because they shouted for him to lie down while he was handcuffed (带上手铐)。

Maybe ten-year-old Elizabeth put it best when she said to her father, “But, Dad, you can’t be healthy if you are dead.”

Dad, in a hurry to get home before dark so he could go for a run, had forgotten to wear his safety belt---- a mistake 75 % of the US population make every day. The big question is why.

There have been many myths about safety belts ever since their first appearance in cars some forty years ago. The following are three of the most common.

Myth Number One: It’s best to be “thrown clear” of a serious accident.

Truth: Sorry, but any accident serious enough to “throw you clear” is also going to be serious enough to give you a very bad landing. And chances are you’ll have traveled through a windshield(挡风玻璃) or door to do it. Studies show that chances of dying after a car accident are 25 times greater in cars where people are “thrown clear”.

Myth Number Two: Safety belts “trap” people in cars that are burning or sinking in water.

Truth : Sorry again, but studies show that people knocked unconscious(昏迷) due to not wearing safety belts have a greater chance of dying in these accidents. People wearing safety belts are usually protected to the point of having a clear head to free themselves from such dangerous situations, not to be trapped in them.

Myth Number Three: Safety belts aren’t needed at speed of less than 30 miles per hour(mph).

Truth: When two cars traveling at 30 mph hit each other, an unbelted driver would meet windshield with force equal to diving headfirst into the ground from a height of 10 meters.

76. Why did Elizabeth say to her father, “ But, Dad, you can’t be healthy if you are dead.”?

A. He was driving at great speed

B. He was running across the street.

C. He didn’t have his safety belt on

D. He didn’t take his medicine on time

77. The reason why Father was in a hurry to get home was that he _________.

A. wasn’t feeling very well B. hated to drive in the dark

C. wanted to take some exercise

D. didn’t want to be caught by the police

78. According to the text, to be “thrown clear” of a serious accident is very dangerous because you _______.

A. may be knocked down by other cars

B. may get seriously hurt being thrown out of the car.

C. may find it impossible to get away from the seat

D. may get caught in the car door.

79. Some people prefer to drive without wearing a safety belt because they believe _____.

A. the belt prevents them from escaping in an accident

B. they will be unable to think clearly in an accident

C. they will be caught when help comes

D. cars catch fire easily

80. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. Never drive faster than 30 miles an hour.

B. Try your best to save yourself in a car accident

C. Never forget to wear the safety belt while driving

D. Drive slowly while you’re not wearing a safety belt
