Christmas Day, the birthday of Jesus Christ, is the most important festival in Britain and some other countries. On Christmas Eve, people usually tell their children to put their stockings at the end of their beds before they go to sleep. Children believe Santa Claus, with the other name of Father Christmas, will come during the night and fill their stockings with Christmas presents.

Actually, Father Christmas is children‘s father. He dresses up in a red coat and waits until children fall asleep. Then he goes into children’s bedrooms, and puts small presents in their stockings. When children are no longer young, they know who Father Christmas really is.

“Dad, why are the Americans fighting against us? Are we going to be killed?” asks the son of Abu Singar, an Iraqi engineer.Abu finds it hard to explain this war to his eight-year-old son.

Ever since humans have lived on the earth, they have made use of various forms of communication.Generally, this expression of thoughts and feelings has been in the form of oral speech. When there is a language barrier(障碍), communication is completed through sign language in which motions stand for letters, words, and ideas.Tourists and the people unable to hear or speak have had to turn to this form of expression. Many of these symbols of whole words are very lively and exact and can be used internationally; spelling, however, cannot.

Body language sends ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either meaningfully or not.A wink(眨眼) can be a way of showing that the party is only joking.A nod means agreement, while shaking the head indicates disagreement.

Other forms of nonlinguistic(非语言的) language can be found in Braille (a system of raised dots read with the fingertips), signal flags, Morse code, and smoke signals.Road maps and picture signs also guide and warn people. While language is the most common form of communication, other systems and techniques also express human thoughts and feelings.

I was lucky to attend the singing performance which was held for John Denver in the people’s Theatre this evening.

John Denver is a famous country singer of America. A lot of his songs have been made into records. He has sung in many countries in the world and we can often hear his songs over the radio or on TV.

Denver’s songs are wonderful though some words in them are difficult to understand. Hearing his songs, I seemed to see the beautiful scenes of the country. I think they are the best ones I’ve ever heard.
