It wasn’t until 1978 that three American balloonists succeeded. It took them just six days to make their trip from their homes in the United States to Paris. Beijing students no longer need to trash their used textbooks at the end of the term..

Now they can get a little money back through exchanging old books for new at the Cathay Bookstore on Liulichang Street, Xuanwu District.

If the books are in fair condition, they can be exchanged for new ones and receive a 10 to 20 per cent discount, said Han Zheng, director of the bookstore’s Public Information Department.

All used textbooks and reference books will be donated to the Hope Project and will be sent to schools in rural and mountainous areas where they are greatly needed.

More than 1,000 students have already taken advantage of the new policy, with more than 3,000 books exchanged since mid-July according to Han.

“This practice is really helpful to students,” said a father of primary school student from Dongcheng District.

Through a survey of teachers and students from more than 20 schools in the Xuanwu District of Beijing, the Cathay Bookstore realized that most students had problems dealing with the used books.

In the past, the solution was simpler: a student could just pass on the books to siblings. But nowadays most students are in one-child families. Thus, passing the books on in the family is no longer an option.

With no one to pass the books to, many students have resorted to just discarding them.

第二节:书面表达 (满分15 分)

One possible version:

Dear Editor,

I’ m writing to tell you about a discussion we’ve had about whether students of Senior 3 should take physical exercise.

As you know, every coin has two sides. 55% of the students think they should take all kinds of exercise every day, such as doing morning exercises, playing table tennis and playing basketball, but not spend too much time on them.

AS a proverb says,“All work and no play males Jack a dull boy.” Exercise builds their body and reduces lofts diseases. Sports let them have a good rest so that their study will be more effective.

On the other hand, 45% of the students believe taking exercise is a waste a waste of time and tiring. After having sports, they are too excited for a long time to pay attention to their lessons. And it’s possible to be hurt in sports.

Yours sincerely

Li Hua
