One of the most popular American singers of the twentieth century was Elvis Presley. He made the rock"n" roll music popular all over the world. He sold millions of records and made many successful films, and he helped change the direction of popular music in the l960s.
E1vis Presley was born in a poor family in 1935. His parents were simple country people who often took him to church, where he learned to sing, and he never forgot the kind of songs that he used to sing in church as a child.
When he was young, Elvis moved from Toledo to Memphis in Tennessee, where he attended high school, but he was not a good student. His only real interest was singing. He began to sing in the style(风格) that is called "Country and western".

Shortly after that, Elvis met Tom Parker, who became his manager and arranged(安排) concerts for him across the United States and new recordings as well. Soon Elvis became famous around the country. Later Elvis went to Hollywood and began to appear in films such as Love Me Tender and King Creole.
But Elvis found it difficult to live with success. Like many other famous people, he began to take drugs and his health started to suffer. Beijing---China is going green. In order to reduce air pollution and oil shortages, carmakers have announced their plans to develop hybrid vehicles for the Chinese market.
The first China made Toyota’s hybrid car Prius hit the road last week. Let’s have a look at the new car.
Any vehicle is a hybrid when it combines two or more sources of power. Hybrid cars use an electric motor with rechargeable batteries and a gasoline engine.
A hybrid car has a smaller gasoline engine and an electric motor than a traditional car. The gasoline engine provides 99 per cent of the power when the car is cruising.
The electric motor provides extra power for running up hills or when extra acceleration is needed.
Step into a Prius, and turn on the power. The first thing you notice is that it is quieter than a traditional car. At this point, the car’s gasoline engine is dormant. The electric motor will provide power until the car reaches about 24km/h.If you stay at low speed, you are effectively driving an electric car, with no gasoline being used, and no exhaust gas given off.
An onboard computer cides when to use the gasoline engine, when to go electric, and when to use a combination of the two. If you go over 24km/h,when you step on the pedal, you are telling the computer how fast you want to go.
The electric motor recharges automatically when braking. And when driving at certain speeds, the gasoline engine not only powers the car but also recharges the batteries.
When you use the brake, the electric motor acts like a generator to produce electricity to recharge the batteries will last for around 200,000 miles.
60.When the hybrid car is cruising, _______.
A. only the gasoline engine provides power
B. only the electric motor provides power
C. there is no need to provide power
D. both the gasoline engine and the electric motor provide power

There are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term. Information in long-term memory can be remembered at a later time when it is needed. The information may be kept for days or weeks. However, information in short-term memory is kept for only a few seconds, usually by repeating the information over and over. The following experiment shows how short-term memory has been studied.
Henning studied how students who are learning English as a second language remember vocabulary. The subjects in his experiment were 75 college students. They represented all levels of ability in English: beginning, intermediate (中等), and native speaking students.
To begin, the subjects listened to a recording of a native speaker reading a paragraph in English. Following the recording, the subjects took a 15-question test to see which words they remembered. Each question had four choices. The subjects had to circle the word they had heard in the recording, some of the questions had four choices that sound alike. For example, weather, whether, wither, and wetter are four words that sound alike. Some of the questions had four choices that have the same meaning. Method, way, manner, and system would be four words with the same meaning. Finally the subjects took a language proficiency test.
Henning found that students with a lower proficiency in English made more of their mistakes on words that sound alike; students with a higher proficiency made more of their mistakes on words that have the same meaning. Henning's results suggest that beginning students hold the sound of words in their short-term memory, and advanced students hold the meaning of words in their short-term memory.
64. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Information in short-term memory is different from that in long-term memory.
B. Long-term memory can be achieved only by training.
C. It is easier to test short-term memory than long, term memory.
D. Henning gave a separate test on vocabulary to his students.
65. From Henning's result we can see that ________.
A. beginners have difficulty distinguishing the pronunciation of words
B. advanced students always remember words by their meaning
C. it is difficult to remember words that sound alike
D. it is difficult to remember words that have the same meaning
66. The word "subject" in the passage means _________.
A. memory B. the theme of listening material
C. a branch of knowledge studied D. the student experimented on
67. The passage centers on ________.
A. memory B. two kinds of memory
C. short-term memory D. an experiment on students

Friends play an important part in our lives. Although we may take friendship for granted, we often don’t clearly understand how to make friends. While we get on well with a number of people, we are usually friends with only a very few --- for example, the average among students is about 6 per person. In all the cases of friendly relationships, two people like one another and enjoy being together, but beyond that, the degree of intimacy between them and the reasons for their shared interests very greatly. As we get to know people, we take into account things like age, race, economic condition, social position, and intelligence. Although these factors are not of great importance, it is more difficult to get on with people when there is a marked difference in age and background.
Some friendly relationships can be kept on argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have similar ideas and beliefs, the same opinions and interests---they often talk about “being on the same wavelength. It generally takes time to reach this point. And the more intimately involved people become, the more they depend on one another. People who want to be friends have to put up with annoying habits and to stand differences.
In contrast with marriages, there are no friendship ceremonies to strengthen the association between two people. But the supporting and understanding of each other that results from shared experiences and emotions do seem to create a powerful bond, which can overcome differences in background, and break down barriers of age, class and race.

One possible version:
Dear editor,
I’m writing to tell you about the arguments on whether students of Senior Three should go in for sports or not.
More than half of the students think we should exercise every day because health is the most important. You can do nothing without it. Sports and exercise can make us strong and energetic.
On the other hand, 45% of us believe it a waste of time to take exercise. Also, it’s very tiring. After having sports, we are too excited to get down to our study. We may even get hurt in sports.
And I think it’s true that we should devote ourselves to the lessons, but sports make our brains relaxed and enable us to have a sound sleep every night. The efficiency of revision will surely be improved.
Best wishes!
