As China develops, the Internet's presence is inescapable. But some get addicted to the Internet. 13-year old Xiao Yi paid the high price for his. He rode an elevator to the top of a 24-storey building and then jumped to his death. His suicide note explained he wanted to enter another life to meet the characters from the online games he played constantly, sometimes days in a row. “He had a kind of fixation.” Xiao Yi’s father says, “He threw himself into an imaginary world."

Internet addiction got attention in China when stories such as Xiao Yi's popped up in China state-run press. Internet addicts died from exhaustion after spending days online or murdered others in search of virtual (虚幻的) possessions. Public anger over these incidents spurred the opening of China's first Internet addiction treatment center.

Bermuda prepared itself for a potential hurricane last night as tropical storm Florence picked up strength and headed towards the North Atlantic island.

By yesterday evening, Florence was around 500 miles south of Bermuda and moving north-west at about 13 mph.

With gusts reaching up to 70 mph, forecasters warned that Florence could become a hurricane as it nears Bermuda, and the island's government urged its 65,000 residents to take precautions.

“The public is encouraged to stock up on normal hurricane supplies and to secure their homes, lawn furniture and any other loose items which could be affected by high winds,” said Derrick Burgess, the island's minister of public safety.

Yesterday, islanders hurried to install storm shutters on their houses and pull yachts (游艇) on to beaches. The island's only airport was boarded up and is not expected to re-open until Tuesday.

One local, mechanic Paul Henderson, 53, recalled 1987's devastating Hurricane Emily as he stocked up on batteries.

“I was still cleaning up my property three years after,” he said.

The storm was expected to turn away from the coast of the United States as it turned north toward Bermuda, but forecasters said its large size could also create high surf and rapid currents along eastern parts of the coast.

The six-month hurricane season that began on 1 June has produced only one hurricane so far. Tropical storm Ernesto briefly reached hurricane strength near Haiti last month but weakened before drenching (湿透) America's east coast.

Last year's storm season saw a record 28 named storms and 15 hurricanes, including Hurricane Katrina, which destroyed New Orleans and a line of the US's south-west coast.

68. What does the underlined phrase “take precautions” mean?

A. Do something to prevent danger.

B. Move from one place to another.

C. Prepare food for future use.

D. Stay away from danger.

69. Mechanic Henderson said, “I was still cleaning up my property three years later.” What does he mean?

A. He was still preparing for the coming hurricane three years later.

B. Emily left a lot of dust on his household things.

C. He gained a lot of property after the hurricane.

D. He was still dealing with the ruins left by the hurricane.

70. From the passage we know that _____.

A. a hurricane is equal to a tropical storm.

Do you want to work with people or animals or machines or tools? Do you want to work indoors or outdoors, directly serve people in need or serve people behind the scenes? These are the typical questions that a volunteer service agency would ask.

Every year, thousands and thousands of people in the west offer volunteer services. Volunteering greatly strengthens the community partly because it helps the old, the young, the weak, the sick, the disabled and the injured to overcome difficulties.

________________________________________. They may give people advice, offer friendship to the young, drive the elderly to church, counsel kids against drugs, work as an assistant in a school or nursing home, raise funds, plant trees, help out in local libraries and do many other things.

Volunteering can be a few hours a week or a few hours a month, time during the day, evenings or weekends, either part time or full time. Anybody who is willing to serve people in need can become a volunteer.

The art of volunteering is a process of both giving and receiving. Volunteering allows volunteers to meet new people and and mix with people from all walks of life. Volunteering is an excellent way to experiment, practice and try out new techniques and skills. It is much more effective to practice a skill than to read about it or study it in a classroom. Volunteering is a great way to develop good teamwork skills, discover your individual talents and explore career choices. Being a volunteer takes individuals on a wonderful journey and helps them learn many important things beyond their school learning.

               Protect Our Environment

With the development of society, China’s industry has been developing rapidly. A lot of factories have been set up. People’s living standard has been greatly improved. More and more people are owning cars. But at the same time, our environment is becoming worse. Many factories send out smoke polluting the air. Waste water is poured in to rivers. Waste gas from cars does great harm to people’s health. Used plastic bags can be seen everywhere. All these have a bad influence on people’s life. I think the government should take measures in fighting against pollution to protect the environment. (102 words)

听力原文

Text 1

M: What can I do for you, madam?

W: I’d like to have a look at books on science. I want to buy some.

Text 2

W: It’s a beautiful day. What about going swimming?

M: Any other time would be great. But today I’m preparing an English exam.

Text 3

W: Excuse me, would you mind if I used your phone?

M: Help yourself; it’s on the table over there.

Text 4

M: Do you have to leave already?

W: I’m sorry, but I must. My parents are expecting me.

Text 5

M: I remember how we all used to enjoy funny stories our grandfather told when we were young.

W: Yes. He must have gotten terribly tired of having us around. But now he is so ill that it’s impossible to listen to stories at all.

Text 6

M: There will be a meeting after class. Are you coming, Helen?

W: After class? I’m sorry, Mike. I’m afraid I can’t.

M: But it’s quite important. It’s about our helping Bob.

W: Oh, I have to go home to look after my mother. She’s ill today.

M: Sorry to hear that. Then we’ll have to have the meeting without you. I’ll tell you about the meeting tomorrow morning.

W: Thanks.

Text 7

M: Now, Alice, did you get a good view of the accident?

W: Oh, yes. I was standing outside the bank building and I saw it all quite clearly.

M: Do you know what time it was?

W: Yes, I checked my watch. It was a quarter to three exactly.

M: Good. Now, how fast was the truck moving?

W: Well, quite slowly—about 10 miles an hour. It was coming up Garden Road. I suppose the truck driver knew the lights were going to change. But they were still red when he went over them.

M: I see. What about the car? Was it also driving slowly?

W: It was coming along South Street about 30 miles per hour. It was a blue Toyota. The driver stopped his car when he saw the truck crossing the street.

M: Did you see what color his traffic light was?

W: Yes, it changed to yellow just before he crossed it.

Text 8

W: Can I help you, sir?

M: Yes, I want my room key back.

W: May I know your name and room number, please?

M: Barry Low, Room 701.

W: Just a moment, please!

M: There’s no need to hurry. I’ve got plenty of time.

W: Here’s your room key, Mr, Low.

M: Thank you very much. By the way, are you a new comer?

W: Yes, I’ve just come on duty here this morning.

Text 9

M: Hello! I wonder if you could help me. I’ve just arrived here, and I need to find somewhere to stay.

W: Uh-huh.

M: Can you tell me where I can find a cheap hotel?

W: Certainly. There are a few around here. The nearest and one of the nicest is just around the corner. It’s called the Euro Hotel. Should I phone to see if they have a room for you?

M: No, that’s OK. I’ll just walk there myself. Ah! Another thing. I need to change some money, but I don’t know what time the banks close.

W: They close seven o’clock in the evening.

M: OK. Thank you very much.

Text 10

Welcome, everyone. This is our Saturday Radio Programme. This is Saturday, March 12th. Now for the news:

First some bad news. Someone stole one of the school computers last night. We don’t know who, but a taxi driver saw a tall man at the school gate at about midnight. The man was wearing black trousers and a black hat.

Did you see him? If you did, please telephone the police at 6426, that’s 6426.

Now for some good news. The new Sports Centre opens at nine thirty tomorrow morning. In the afternoon, at three o’clock, there is a swimming match. If you can swim, go there and try to win. The first prize is a radio.

See you there. Goodbye.
