With a good shopping position and the right amount(数量)of money, any educated person ought to be able to make a living out of a bookshop. It is not a difficult trade to learn and the large chain-stores can never force the small bookseller out of existence as they have done to the corner shop. But the hours of work are very long-I was only doing a part-time job, but my boss put in a seventy-hour week, besides regular journeys out of shopping hours to buy books.
The real reason why I should not like to be back in the book trade for life, however, is that while I was in it I lost my love of books. A bookseller cannot always tell the truth about his books, and that gives him a dislike for them. There was a time when I really did love books—loved the sight and smell and feel of them—if they were fifty or more years old, that is. Nothing pleased me quite so much as to buy a bargain lot of them on sale for several pounds. There is a peculiar flavour(独特的味道)about the unexpected books you pick up in that kind of collection: little-known eighteenth-century poets, or out-of-date geography books. For occasional(偶尔的)reading—in your bath, for example, or late at night when you are too tired to go to bed—there is nothing as good as a very old picture story-book.
But as soon as I went to work in the bookshop I stopped buying books. Seen in a mass. five or ten thousand at a time, books were dull and even a little tiresome. Nowadays I do buy one occasionally, but only if it is a book that I want to read and can’t borrow, and I never buy rubbish.

A. stories making readers sleepless B. valuable ones bought on sale
C. peculiar ones with great expectation D. geography ones from the eighteenth century
63. The author will only buy new books .
A. if he feels dull and tired B. after he gives up his job as a bookseller
C. which are interesting but hard to borrow D. when he throws away old ones

Together, they built several modern sculptures from plaster and metal. “The instructions would take a while to decipher(解释,解谜). But finally, they would come, and finally make sense.”

Vicki Brown, 30, played a very important role in ending the nationwide manhunt. “It was about ten past two in the morning when the phone went again and a policeman said ‘Would you go and make yourself known to tile armed officers outside?’. My heart missed a beat.”
Vicki quietly showed eight armed officers through passages and staircases to the top floor room and handed over the key.
“I realized that my bedroom window overlooks that pair of the hotel, so I went to watch. I could not see into the man’s room, but I could see the passage. (Text 2)
W: Does Jack often spend his Sundays at home?
M: No, sometimes he visits his friends. But he likes nothing better than walking in the forest.
(Text 3)
W: You look so worried. What’s the trouble?
M: Oh, I’ m short of money. Can you lend me $ 10?
W: I’ve just spent my last dollar for vegetables. I wish you had asked me about an hour ago.
(Text 4)
M: Didn’t you tell Rose the result of the test?

M: Let it remain a secret a little longer. She’ll be unhappy when she gets the news.
(Text 5)
M: Can we travel to New York together?
W: Certainly. I’ll pick you up at 2:00 and we should arrive there by 5:00 if the traffic isn’t too heavy.
M: Thank you.
(Text 6)
M: May I help you?
W: Yes. My son is graduating from college next week, and I would like to get him a nice gift.
M: What kind of gift are you interested in?
W: Well, I usually spend about $20 on a gift. Do you have anything nice for the price?
M: How about a pen and a notebook?
W: No, his father gave him that last year.

W: Well, the customers want to look at things before they buy.
M: Yes, I’m sorry. Customers are always right.
W: That’s right, so please be more polite next time.
(Text 10)
When you first arrive in a Western country, you’ll probably find that constantly ringing telephones nearly drive you crazy. But you’ll get used to it after a while, and you’ll probably come to depend on phones almost as much as Westerners do.
Many times in the course of a work day, or often in the evening as well, you may use telephones. In small places, like college towns, you might drop in on friends informally. But in big cities you never just show up at someone’s house, even a relative’s, without calling first. If you want to go to a film, you might call to see what’s playing, ask the time and check the prices; if you want to take a train, bus or plane, you can call to find out the time, prices and ticketing information; if you want to shop for clothes after work, you might call to ask how late the store is open before you travel all the way downtown.

Today I showed some foreign friends around our city. We started off by car from the Friendship Hotel at 8:10 am. We first went to Zhongshan Park. We were all struck by its beautiful flowers on show. Then, we visited the city museum. We saw plenty of valuable things, from which we learned more about the city. After that we drove to Pengshan Temple. It is a beautiful place of interest in our city, and from there we enjoyed the wonderful scenery of the sea. We had a delicious lunch at the Seafood Restaurant and came back at 1:20 pm.
All the foreign friends were pleased with my arrangement. We did have a wonderful time today.
