Kristy, 28, a cook in La Gross, often wondered what she’d do in a life-threatening situation. On August 29,1997, she got her answer. While she was driving on a road a big truck hit its head on a pickup(小型货车)car, The pickup burst into flames. Kristy rushed out and ran to the pickup. Two farmers, Dean Bernhard, 51, and his brother Donald, 44, were inside.

When she got close, Kristy could see the unconscious driver. The other man was under the passenger seat.Said Kristy, “ The smells were sickening (使人昏晕的). I was afraid the truck would blow up and kill us all”.

The driver of the big truck was struggling to open the passenger door.Kristy rushed to the driver’s side. Finally they opened the door. I am wearing a small red ribbon this morning to remind myseft and others around me that today is World AIDS Day,

The red ribbon, an international symbol of AIDS awareness, is gaining increasing public recognition as more Chinese, from top leaders to movie stars, wear it today.

Gone were the days when the topic of HIV/AIDS was a public and media taboo(禁忌). Over the past few years, we have watched, read and heard many stories from doctors, volunteers and public health officials at the forefront of HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment.

Quite a few people with HIV/AIDS have come forward to share their experiences on TV or in the media.

The local and central governments have become more forthcoming(乐于帮助的) with their new prevention and treatment programs, and financial(财政的)input. The latter rose from less than 1 million yuan (US$ 121,000) in 1986 to a pledge of 800 milliom yuan (US$98.8million) this year.

The change from silence to public and media campaigns with official promises has been remarkable, especially since China battled through the SARS crisis two years ago.

But have we got a full understanding on HIV/AIDS? What do we know about the extent of  HIV/AIDS in China?

The figures, ranging from confirmed cases to estimates, remain debated. After all, no more than a year has passed since the policy of free medical tests was made public. Unknown numbers from the high-risk groups drug addicts and people working in sex-related place as well as farmers who once sold blood could still be reluctant to come forward.

Most of us are used to seasons. Each year, spring follows winter, which follows autumn, which follows summer, which follows spring. And winter is colder than summer. But the earth goes through temperature cycles over much longer periods than those that we experience.

Between 65,000 and 35,000 years ago, the planet was much colder than it is now.During that time the temperature also changed a lot, with periods of warming and cooling.Ice melted during the warm periods, which made sea levels rise.Water froze again during the cold periods.

A new study from Switzerland sheds light on(使某事清楚明白地显示出来) where ice sheets (冰川) melted during the ice age.

It now seems that the ice melted at both ends of the earth, rather than just in either northern or southern regions(区域).This surprised the researchers from the University of Bern(伯恩大学). Scientists have long assumed (假设) that most of the ice that melted was in the Northern hemisphere(半球) during the 30,000—year long ice age. That belief was held because the North Pole is surrounded by land, while the South Pole is surrounded by the Antarctic Ocean. It is easier for ice sheets to grow on land. If surrounded by sea the ice can easily just slip into the ocean instead of building up.

The researchers used a computer model to look at ways the ice could melt and how it might affect sea levels. They compared these results to evidence of how temperatures and currents actually changed during that time. The model showed that if it was only in the Northern hemisphere that ice melted, there would have been a bigger impact (影响) on ocean currents (水流) and sea temperatures than what actually happened.Studies suggest that melting just in the Southern hemisphere would have been impossible, too.

The only reasonable conclusion the scientists could make was that ice melted equally in the North and the South.

It is still a mystery(神秘的事情) as to what caused the temperature changes that caused the ice to mest.

51.The underlined words“both ends”mean .

  A. eastern regions and western regions

  B. South Pole and Norht Pole

  C. Northern hemisphere and equator

  D. Antarctic Ocean and Indian Ocean

52.The North Pole is surrounded by land, while the South Pole is surrounded by the Antarctic Ocean. So scientists thought that ,

A.most of the ice melted in the Northern hemisphere

B.most of the ice melted in the Southern hemisphere

C.the North Pole is colder than the South Pole

D.the South Pole is colder than the North Pole

53. We can infer from the passage     .

 A. the ice can easily just slip into the ocean

 B. volcanoes caused the ice to melt

 C. melting just in the Northern hemisphere would have been impossible

  D. researchers often use the computer models help their research work

54.The scientists are not sure     .

  A. how long the ice age lasted

  B. where ice sheets melted during the ice age

  C. what caused the temperature changes

  D. what the earth is made up of

55.Which of the following is the best title?

  A. A computer model

  B. Studies show ice melted equally in the North and the South during the ice age

Bicycle---An important Means of Transport in China

Bicycles have become more and more popular in China. People ride bicycles to their work places, to schools, to shoppong centers, and so on. During rush hours, you can often see a boiling sea of bicycles running in all directions. With the largest number of bicycle riders in the world, China is often referred to as the kingdom of bicycles.

Compared with cars, bicycles have many advantages. Firstly, they are very handy and convenient. Although a bicycle runs much more slowly than a car, it can carry you to anywhere you like in town and does not need a large parking place. Secondly, it is not so expensive as a car, and therefore, every family can afford to buy and to repair it. Thirdly, the car causes air pollution but the bicycle does not. Besides, it does good to your health if you ride it regularly.

However, bicycles have also brought some problems. For example, they have made the streets very crowded and caused many accidents. For another, some riders park their bicycles here and there, which leaves the city in a state of disorder. Nevertheless, as long as these problems are taken care of by the local authorities, bicycles will continue to widely used in China.

This paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages of bicycle. Cycling is both convenient and cheap and helps to reduce air pollution and keep healthy. However, disadvantages include traffic accidents, crowdedness and disorder in city.

I often go to school on my bike, with which I am satisfied very much. In my opinion, bicycles have many advantages. Firstly, it is convenient for us to go outside. Bicycles are the best choice especially when we want to go where we live. Secondly, riding a bicycle is good exercise to us. If we keep doing it, it is beneficial to our health. Thirdly, riding a bicycle is cheaper than taking a bus and other vehicles, which can save money for us.

As far as I’m concerned , I will choose to use bicycles. On one hand, using bicycles is beneficial to the environment. They do not send off wasted gases like cars and therefore can reduce air pollution. On the other hand, China has the biggest population of the world. If the government forbids using bicycles, many people will lose their vehicles, it is inconvenient for them.
