If there is one thing I’m sure about, it is that in a hundred years from now we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that newspapers are a necessity. Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation.
The nature of what is news may change. What basically makes news is what affects our lives - the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same. I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It’s already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic (基因) engineering. In the future, I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do - as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are.
It’s quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted (传送) electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home. In fact, I’m pretty sure that how it will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu; making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to read - sports and international news, etc.
I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media(媒体). They actually feed off each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill off newspapers, but that hasn’t happened. What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures: on a screen or sound lost in the air. And as for the Internet, it’s never really pleasant to read something just on a screen.

58. What will probably be on in the newspaper made by yourself?

British Red Cross volunteer Philip Roberts showed how important basic first aid skills can be by saving a road crash victim’s life.
Philip was driving down the M6 motorway early one morning when he came across a serious road accident. A truck had crashed into a car, driving it off the motorway and into a roadside bank.
As the first person on the scene, Philip made sure it was safe to approach the vehicle and found an unconscious woman inside, slumped (陷入) forward and with her airway blocked. As another driver approached, he shouted for them to call the emergency services. Then Philip acted fast.
He recalls:“Climbing into the car, I immediately lifted the woman’s head and opened her airway, so she would be able to breathe. I then kept my hands on her head to keep her neck steady, as the crash could have caused spinal (脊柱的) injury.”
“When the emergency services arrived, they asked me to stay inside the car and maintain(维持) the woman’s airway while they cut off the roof of the car.” By the time the woman was freed from the vehicle, half an hour later, she was starting to regain consciousness.
Philip said, “The simple first aid techniques I used can be learned in five minutes, yet they probably saved the driver’s life. Surely that’s a worthwhile way to spend five minutes!”
“It shows that you don’t necessarily need a big first aid kit full of medical equipment-your hands are the best first aid tools you have.”
Thousands of people are killed on UK roads every year and over half of road accident deaths occur before the emergency services arrive. It can take less than four minutes for a blocked airway to cause death, while it takes around eight minutes for emergency services to arrive.

A relationship is defined as a state of connectedness between people. Although in today’s society with its crazy rhythm (节奏) of everyday life, when people tend to live in thickly populated cities, spending most of their time in the office and hardly knowing their neighbour’s name, we still find ourselves in some kinds of relationships-with friends, family, or colleagues.
Family relationships are the first relationships people enter. Parents and relatives influence our emotional development by creating a model that we are sometimes bound to follow all our lives, often subconsciously (潜意识地). In day-care, at school, then in the office we spend a lot of time among fellow students and co-workers. We learn to keep business relationships, to work in a team environment, then form smaller groups of like-minded people and finally select some of them as our friends.
What is a true friendship? How does it start? Are we destined (注定) to become friends with certain people or can we actually plan whom to be friends with?
“Everybody’s friend is nobody’s.” said Arthur Schopenhauer. Unlike a companionship based on belonging to the same team or group, friendship is a very personal and selective type of relationship. It calls for trust, sincerity, and emotional bonds.
Sociologists believe that most people are looking for similarities in views, social status, and interests when choosing friends. No wonder that our friends are often people of the same age, sex, and education. Another important factor is joint activity and solidarity. This is the reason why many of us befriend our colleagues and other people who work in the same field.
Most people would agree that a friend is someone who always listens and understands. Understanding in this context implies a lot of meanings-compassion, sympathy, and emotional closeness. It’s a process in which your friend reads your emotional state, shares your feelings, identifies himself or herself with you.
66. What is the best title of this passage?

B. How to Make Friends with Colleagues
C. What is a True Friendship?

B. Friendship needs trust, sincerity, and emotional bonds.
C. Relationships are friendships between people.
D. Understanding is a process in which the friend reads our emotional state, shares our feelings, identifies himself / herself with us.
69. The underlined word “befriend” in the fifth paragraph means ________.
A. treat B. work with C. become friends with D. help
70. Why are our friends usually of the same age, sex, and education?
A. Because they are clever and well-behaved.
B. Because most of us are looking for similarities in views, social status, and interests when
choosing friends.
C. Because they help us with our work and share our happiness and sorrow.
D. Because they cooperate with us well.

Researchers found that compared with teens who spent much of their free time in front of TV sets, those who were physically active often had higher self-respect, better grades. and were less likely to have risky behavior like taking drugs, smoking, or drinking. The findings, based on a national survey of nearly 12,000 middle and high school students, were published in a journal.
“Across the board, children who were engaged in any kind of activity were better off than kids who watched a lot of TV,” said study co-author professor Penny Gordon - Larsen of University of North Carolina.
Other studies have linked certain content of television programs, such as violence and sex, to children’s behavior. But beyond this issue, Gordon - Larsen said that kids who spend hours watching TV “miss opportunities” to develop skills, learn teamwork and have other experiences that their more active peers benefit form.
That doesn’t mean, however, that kids have to be on the football team. The study found that some activities like skating and skateboarding — which adults sometimes frown upon—were also related to better self-respect and less risk-taking.
That skaters were better behaved than TV -watchers might come as a surprise to some adults who consider these teens to be bad, according to Gordon - Larsen. Skateboarding is forbidden in many public areas, and some communities oppose building skating parks. But if kids who like to skate have nowhere to do it, “it’s a shame,” said Gordon-Larsen.
Not only should parents encourage their kids to engage in the physical activities they enjoy, she said, but schools and communities should also do more to create opportunities for children to be active.

写 作: Protecting Our Eyesight
Because of reading for a long time without a rest or in dim light, or reading with the book held too close, about 40 percent of the students in my class have poor eyesight and have to wear glasses.
As we all know, near-sightedness causes many inconveniences. For example, a person wearing glasses has difficulty in doing almost all kinds of sports. In winter, the moment a person wearing glasses goes out or enters a house, they are covered with frost. Furthermore, a near-sighted person can not become a soldier or a professional athlete in some sports fields.
Therefore, we should protect our eyesight. We should read in good light with the book held about 30cm from our eyes. In addition, we should do eye exercises every day.
