Celebrities (famous people) have joined college students around China in the latest government initiative (倡导) to protect the environment. The Great Wall was the focus of attention, with a clean-up of the surrounding area, and tree planting. The volunteers hope their actions can raise public awareness about environmental protection.

Familiar faces including film star Jackie Chan and TV host Yang Lan from Hong Kong were at the Great Wall. Over 200 college students joined them. They’re all volunteers for a government sponsored (主办) environmental protection program.

A latest government report warns, China’s fragile (易脆的) environment and limited resources could hardly support economic development in the next five to ten years. However, Chinese citizens have long neglected environmental protection. Organizers hope these young people will influence people around.

Pan Yue, vice minister of State Environmental Protection Administration (环保局),said, “The government can only make policy. But environmental protection also depends on public participation (参与). Public figures, ordinary people and the government should all join hands.”

Around the country, over 10,000 college students joined their peers in Beijing ---- planting trees, raising awareness about water conservation and cleaning rubbish from rivers.

How much living space does a person need? What happens when his space requirements are not adequately (足够地) met? Sociologists and psychologists are conducting experiments on rats to try to determine the effects of overcrowded conditions on man. Recent studies have shown that the behavior of rats is greatly affected by space. If rats have adequate living space, they eat well, sleep well, and reproduce well. However, if their living conditions become too crowded, their behavior patterns and even their health perceptibly change. They cannot sleep and eat well, and signs of fear and tension become obvious. The more crowded they are, the more they tend to bite each other and even kill each other. Thus for rats, population and violence are directly related. Is this a natural law for human society as well? Is adequate space not only desirable, but essential for human survival?

46. This passage is mainly about _________.

A. living space and behavior B. population and living conditions

C. interesting experiments on rats D. a natural law for human society

47. What is the purpose of the experiments described in the passage?

C. To know the likely effects of inadequate living space on human beings.

D. to find out the relationship between population and living conditions.

48. Which is NOT a result of being too crowded for rats?

A. They become nervous. B. they cannot get enough rest.

C. They eat less. D. They become less active.

49. The passage suggests that overcrowded conditions _________.

A. are directly related with population B. may cause an increase in violence

C. may lead to high birth rate D. may bring about pollution problems

50. The author seems to imply that _________.

A. human society is very similar to that of rats

B. birth control is essential for a better life

In bringing up children, every parent watches eagerly the child’s acquisition(学会)of each new skill — the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading and writing. It is common that parents hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child. This might happen at any stage. A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early, and a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm(热情) for life and his desire to find out new things for himself.

Parents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters; others are severe over time of coming home at night or punctuality(准时) for meals. In general, the controls imposed(强加的) represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community(社区) as

much as the child’s own happiness.

As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality. Also, parents should realize that “example is better than precept”. If they are not sincere and do not practise what they preach(说教), their children may grow confused, and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled.

A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents’ principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment.

51. Eagerly watching the child’s acquisition of new skills_____.

A. should be avoided

B. is universal among parents

C. sets up dangerous states of worry in the child

D. will make him lose interest in learning new things

52. When children are learning new skills, parents should_____.

A. encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they read

B. not expect too much of them

C. achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their own

D. create as many learning opportunities as possible

53. The second paragraph mainly tells us that _____.

A. parents should be strict with their children

B. parental controls satisfy only the needs of the parents and the values of the community

C. parental restrictions vary, and are not always enforced for the benefit of the children alone

D. parents vary in their strictness towards their children according to the situation

54 The underlined word “precept” (in Paragraph 3) probably means “_____”.

A. idea B. punishment

C. behaviour D. instruction

55. In moral matters, parents should _____.

A. observe the rules themselves

B. be aware of the marked difference between adults and children

C. forbid things which have no foundation in morality

D. satisfy their children’s needs
