Awareness Weeks (认知宣传周) have become a regular part of Britain’s cultural landscape over the past few years. They started back in 1957, when one charity (慈善机构), Christian Aid, decided to make all its money-raising efforts on one time of year. It was thought that by doing this they would get more publicity for their cause.

They were right, and soon other charities and campaign (活动) groups followed them. These days, most donations (捐款) to charity are not collected on the streets. So instead of just asking for money, charities prefer to spend their time “raising awareness” — spreading knowledge of the work they do or the cause they support. They also compete with businesses and trade groups who use awareness weeks as marketing campaigns for their products.

There are now 500 awareness weeks held every year in the UK. No week goes by without one group or another trying to make the British public aware of something, with most held in May or October.

The danger with all these awareness weeks is that people start to become cynical (不信任). Take National Smile Week; it seems like a great idea. Let’s all make each other’s life a little bit happier with a friendly smile. But really it’s just a group of dentists and cosmetics companies trying to sell us toothpaste. It’s enough to make you want to start National Forget About It Week.

“People feel that many awareness campaigns are just marketing exercises,” says Ms Ormiston, who edits the Awareness Campaign Register, a news letter which encourages people who run Awareness Weeks to become more aware of each other. “But 90 per cent of campaigns are run by traditional charities or not for groups to make money.”

“There’s still no official group for awareness campaigns,” says Ms Ormiston. “People can do what they like , whatever the size of their budgets (经费)or their public relations machines allows.”

This situation has led to calls for laws to stop real charities having their efforts overshadowed by marketing campaigns. This could be done by making the two groups hold their weeks at different times or stopping businesses running imitation (模仿) charity campaigns.

But there is another way. Maybe it’s time for National Weak Awareness Week, especially for people whose awareness of Awareness Weeks is weak.

71. What’s the main purpose of awareness weeks run by charities in Britain?

A. To raise money for charities. B. To spread knowledge of charities.

C. To take up marketing campaigns. D. To advertise their goods for sale.

72. Why do people start to become cynical about awareness weeks?

A. Too many awareness weeks make people feel bored.

B. People feel many awareness weeks are just for marketing exercises.

C. People have a weak awareness of awareness weeks.

D. Awareness weeks are held too often and too much money is raised.

73. What does Ms Ormiston think about awareness weeks?

A. Most of the awareness weeks should not be for making money.

B. Official groups should take the place of charities in awareness campaigns.

C. People can do what they like in awareness weeks.

D. People can get larger budgets through awareness campaigns.

74. Which of the following is the right measure to be taken to solve the problems in awareness campaigns?

A. Laws should stop awareness weeks run by real charities.

B. There should be large public relations departments in awareness campaigns.

C. Business and awareness campaigns should not be held at the same place.

D. Marketing campaigns should not be in the name of charity ones.

75. What’s the writer’s view on Awareness Weeks?

A. National Forget About It Week should be held to stop awareness weeks.

B. National Smile Week is a great idea to improve people’s life.

C. National Weak Awareness Week can help people better understand awareness weeks.

D. Awareness Weeks should be stopped because of marketing campaigns.

“The Lord of the Rings”, one of the best sellers in the new millennium (千年), was made up of three parts —— “The Fellowship of the Ring”, “Two Towers”, and “The Return of the King”. Millions upon millions of people have read it in over 25 different languages, but fewer know about the author and the history of the composition of the creative masterwork.

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born in South Africa in 1892. His parents died when he was a child. Living in England with his aunt, Tolkien and his cousins made up play languages, a hobby that led to Tolkien’s becoming skilled in Welsh, Greek, Gothic, Old Norse and Anglo-Saxon.

After graduating from Oxford, Tolkien served in World War I. In 1917, while recovering from trench fever, he began composing the mythology (神话) for The Rings. As a professor of Anglo-Saxon in 1930s at Oxford, Tolkien was part of an informal discussion group called the Inklings, which included several writers. The group was soon listening to chapters of Tolkien’s imaginative work “The Hobbit”.

Hobbit was a name Tolkien created for a local people that could best be described as half-sized members of the English rural (乡村的) class. Hobbits live in hillside holes. One of them, Bilbo Baggins, looks for treasures with a group of dwarves (侏儒). Every country has its heroes. The heroes are the people the nation and especially the young people admire. If you get a list of the heroes of a nation, it will tell you the potential of that nation.

If today in America, you ask the high school students to list their heroes, their choice would probably fall into three groups. The first group of heroes would be the rock stars —the people connected with rock music. There is no doubt that such people do have talent but one wonders if one should hold up rock stars as a model. The rock stars too often are involved with drugs and their personal life is not all that good. The rock stars are rich and wear the latest fashion styles. However, one should seek more in a hero than such things as money and good clothes.

A second type of hero for the American youth is the sports star. Again you have a person who has a great ability in one area — SPORTS. However, too often the personal life of the sports star is a bit of a mess. Too frequently drugs and drinking are a part of life of the sports star.

A third type of hero is the TV or movie star. This person may have lots of acting talent and is quite handsome. However, the personal life of too many actors is quite sad and they should not be held up as a model for young people.

Today, the rock star, the athlete and the actor all have become the models of the youth in America. Really, do you hear a young person say that his hero is a doctor, a teacher, or a scientist? These people are not rich and do not wear fashionable clothes. However, they are talented people who work hard to make the world a better place for everyone.

What is really sad is that the young try to imitate their heroes. They like to wear the same clothes and follow their styles. If the heroes of today for the American youngsters are limited only to rock stars, athletes and actors, the future does not look too bright.

A letter to Edward, a columnist (报刊专栏作家)

Dear Mr. Expert:

I grew up in an unhappy and abusive (漫骂的) home. I always promised myself that I’d get out as soon as possible. Now, at age 20, I have a good job and a nice house, and I’m really proud of the independence I’ve achieved.

Here’s the problem: several of my friends who still live with their parents wish they had places like mine — so much so that they make mine theirs.

It started out with a couple of them spending the weekends with me. But now they seem to take it for granted that they can show up any time they like. They bring boyfriends over, talk on the phone and stay out forever.

I enjoy having my friends here sometimes — it makes the place feel comfortable and warm — but this is my home, not a party house. I was old enough to move out on my own, so why can’t I seem to ask my friends to respect my privacy?

Joan

Edward’s reply to Joan

Dear Joan:

If your family didn’t pay attention to your needs when you were a child, you probably have trouble letting others know your needs now.

And if you’ve gathered your friends around you to rebuild a happy family atmosphere, you may fear that saying no will bring back the kind of conflict you grew up with — or destroy the nice atmosphere you now enjoy. You need to understand that in true friendship it’s okay to put your own needs first from time to time.

Be clear about the message you want to send. For example, “I really love your company but I also need some privacy. So please call before you come over.”

71. We can learn from the first letter that Joan ________.

A. lives away from her parents B. takes pride in her friends

C. knows Mr. Expert quite well D. hates her parents very much

72. We can infer from the first letter that ________.

A. Joan considers her friends more important than her privacy

B. Joan’s friends visit her more often than she can accept

C. Joan doesn’t like the parties at all

D. Joan dislikes the boyfriends her friends bring over

73. According to Mr. Edward, why can’t Joan tell her friends her feelings?

A. She is afraid of hurting her friends. B. She does not understand true friendship.

C. Her family experience stops her from doing so. D. She does not put her needs first.

74. The underlined word “conflict” in the second letter means________.

A. dependent life B. fierce(激烈的)fight C. bad manners D. painful feeling

75. The second letter suggests that Mr. Edward ________.

A. is worried about Joan’s problem B. warns Joan not to quarrel with her friends

C. advises Joan on how to refuse people D. encourages Joan to be brave enough

Some scientists say that animals in the ocean are increasingly threatened by noise pollution caused by human beings. The noise that affect sea creatures comes from a number of human activities. It is caused mainly by industrial underwater explosions, ocean drilling, and ship engines. Such noises are added to natural sounds. These sounds include the breaking of ice fields, underwater earthquakes, and sounds made by animals themselves.

Decibels(分贝)measured in water are different from those measured on land. A noise of one hundred and twenty decibels on land causes pain to human ears. In water, a decibel level of one hundred and ninety-five would have the same effect.

Some scientists have proposed setting a noise limit of one hundred and twenty decibels in oceans. They have observed that noises at that level can frightened and confuse whales.

A team of American and Canadian scientists discovered that loud noises can seriously injure some animals. The research team found that powerful underwater explosions were causing whales in the area to lose their hearing. This seriously affected the whales’ ability to exchange information and find their way. Some of the whales even died. The explosions had caused their ears to bleed and become infected.

Many researchers whose work depends on ocean sounds object to a limit of one hundred and twenty decibels. They say such a limit would mean an end to important industrial and scientific research.

Scientists do not know how much and what kinds of noises are harmful to ocean animals. However, many scientists suspect that noise is a greater danger than they believed. They want to prevent noises from harming creatures in the ocean.

76. According to the passage, which of the following is increasingly dangerous to sea creatures?

A. The man-made noises. B. The noises made by themselves.

C. The sound of earthquakes. D. The sound of the ice-breaking.

77. Which of the following is discussed in the second paragraph?

A. Different places with different types of noises.

B. The very human ears sensitive to all types of noises.

C. The same noise measured differently on land and in the ocean.

D. The ocean animal’s reaction to noises.

78. As to the influence of noises on whales, which of the following statements is true?

A. They are deaf to noises. B. Noises at a certain level may hurt them.

C. They are easily confused by noises. D. Noises will limit their ability to reproduce.

79. We can know from the passage that many scientists think that the noise limit of one hundred twenty decibels would______.

A. prevent them from doing their research work

B. benefit them a lot in their research work

C. do good to their health D. increase the industrial output

80. According to the passage, what will scientists most probably do in the future?

A. They will try their best to decrease noise.

B. They will work hard to cut down noise pollution.

C. They will study the effect of different noises.

D. They will protect animals from harmful noises.

The sea has always interested man. From it he can get food, minerals, and treasure. For thousands of years, he could sail on it. But he could not got far beneath (在……下方) its surface.

Man wants to explore deep into the sea. However, he is not a fish. He must breathe air, so he can’t stay under the water’s surface for any length of time. To explore deep water, man faces even more dangers and problems.

A diver who wants to stay under water for more than a few minutes must breathe air or a special mixture of gases. He can wear a diving suit and have air pumped (打气) to him from above. He can carry a tank of air on his back and breathe through a hose (软管) and a mouthpiece (接口管). Water weighs 800 times as much as air. Tons of water pushes against a diver deep in the sea. His body is under great pressure (压力).

When a diver is under great pressure, his blood takes in some of the gases he breathes. As he rises to surface, the water pressure becomes less. If the diver rises too quickly, the gases in his blood form bubbles (气泡). The diver is then suffering from the bends (潜水员病). The bends can cause a diver to double up in pain. They can even kill him.

VENICE, a small, waterside city in northeast Italy, boils with happiness and excitement once every year. Between February 21 and March 4, carnival hits the streets.

For most people, carnival means large parties and feasting. But in Venice, it also means traditional masks and clothes.

These costumes were first meant to hide personal identities. Then, different social classes could mix in a sea of happiness.

Along the waterways, people greeted each other with: "Good morning Mrs. Mask!"

Today, people in Venice still dress up in the strangest of ways — as armed soldiers, butchers and fishermen, for example.

Bars and cafes are filled with party-goers who come to show off their beautiful clothes. Their designs and creations are made by special studios. Ready-made costumes are not acceptable.

"In the months before the carnival we work overtime to meet the demand," said a mask-maker. "Many kilometers of silk and lace (花边) are made into costumes. For shopkeepers, carnival is the best time of year."

The Venice carnival dates back to the Middle Ages. At that time, the city was one of the wealthiest in Europe.

The tradition of celebrating with masks and costumes is thought to have been started by the "Stocking Companies". These were groups of young men who organized parties and festivals and wore colourful stockings to distinguish (区分) themselves.

By the 18th century, the carnival had reached its top. It all came to an end when Napoleon controlled Venice in 1797. But in 1979, local people brought the old traditions back to life.

Now the Venice carnival attracts huge crowds from all over the world. This year, about 700,000 people are taking part. Hotels were fully booked months in advance, and bars and restaurants overflow every day.

The city certainly benefits - a whole industry has been built up around the carnival's masks and clothes.

"The Venice carnival is a magical time! It's such a great experience," said one French tourist.

71. What might you infer from the article?

A. People in Venice like to party.        B. Venice was a happy city.

C. There used to be strong feelings of social class in Venice.

D. Venice was a city of silk and lace.

Xu Hui is very excited. The Senior 1 student in a middle school in Beijing will go to Japan with his parents during the Spring Festival.

"Overseas touring has always been a dream for me," he said happily.

Nowadays, Chinese people enjoy longer holidays, such as the three "Golden Week Holidays" (the Spring Festival, May Day and National Day). They have more time to travel. Rising incomes also make travelling abroad realistic for ordinary Chinese people.

Nearly 7 million Chinese travelled overseas in 2001, according to the National Tourism Administration. The most common problem travellers face is how to choose the best routes.

By the end of 2002, Chinese citizens were allowed to travel to 19 foreign countries and regions at their own expense.

The top 10 places included Hong Kong, Macao and Thailand. European countries are also becoming increasingly popular.

"More and more Chinese people have shown interest in travelling to Europe, particularly France and Finland," said Tan Wen, a general manager of China Youth Travel Service. "Sooner or later, there will be a peak (高峰) in European tours."

Another consideration is choosing the right travel agencies and finding the best price. The China Consumers' Association (CCA,中国消费者协会) offered tips to consumers on choosing the right travel agencies to help prevent a relaxing vacation from turning into a costly disaster.

"Price should not be the single most important factor in choosing a travel agency," said Zhang Yuanchao, CCA vice-secretary general. Consumers are advised to choose large State travel agencies with good reputations (名声) and official approval to organize overseas tour groups.

Zhang's association dealt with more than 5,000 complaints about travel agencies last year. And the majority of the complaints were about random changes in travel routes, bad tour guides, and forced shopping.

Travellers were warned to look carefully at their contracts (合同) with agencies and to buy travel insurance (保险).

76. How many reasons are given in the article as to why ordinary Chinese people are traveling abroad more today?

A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.

77. According to the passage, what is the biggest problem Chinese travelers face when

going overseas?

A. Choosing the best travel agent.

B. Deciding the best way to get to the places they want to go to.

C. Traveling to Europe D. Cost

78. According to the passage, what seems to be the most common result of choosing a bad

travel agency?

A. People buy more souvenirs than they had planned to.

B. People spend more money than they had planned to.

C. People go to different places than they had planned to.

D. People complain more than they had planned to.

79. The underlined part "random changes" probably means that _____

A. the traveler agreed with the changes.  B. the travel agency didn't make any changes.

C. the travel agency refused to changes the routes.

D. the travel agency changed the routes or time without following the original plan.

80. What would be a good title for this passage?

A. Xu Hui's Vacation in Japan B. The job of the National Tourism Administration

C. Where Young Chinese Travelers Go    D. Suggestions for the Chinese Traveler

NEW DELHI, India (AP) — India is fast becoming a top destination for tourists thanks to a forceful campaign to push the country’s Himalayan spas(矿泉名胜) and beaches, officials say.

Tourism officials have been crisscrossing the globe as part of the government’s “Incredible India” campaign launched in 2003. And the results are beginning to show. Tourists traveling to India have jumped by nearly 26 percent from last year and the number is expected to cross 3 million this year, said Amitabh Kant, chairman of the India Tourism Development Corp.

“Foreign exchange earnings, too, have shown a nearly 40 percent rise this year,” Kant told The Associated Press.

India’s earnings from tourism were $4.3 billion between January and November 2004, compared to $3.1 billion for the same period of 2003.

“Tourist figures are looking up, especially after the way the travel magazines are praising India,” Renuka Choudhury, India’s tourism minister, told reporters just before leaving for Spain and Italy to push the “Incredible India” campaign.

Conde Nast Traveler ranked India sixth among the world’s top 10 destinations in its annual readers’ traveler awards. India won top points for its cultural diversity, hospitality and good value for money.

Lonely Planet Online, the Website of the guidebook series, described India as among the top five international holiday destinations along with Thailand, Italy, Australia and New Zealand.

The “Incredible India” campaign focuses on the country’s scores of small, largely unexplored tourist spots, as well as India’s traditional healing arts. However, Choudhury noted at least 22 airports are being upgraded, with better signs, modern toilets, lounges and duty free shops. A tourist police force has been set up at airports, railway and bus terminals.

When should a child start learning to read and write? This is one of the questions I am frequently asked. There is no hard and fast rule, for no two are alike, and it would be wrong to set a time when all should start being taught the intricacies (难懂之处) of reading letters to form words.

If a three-year-old wants to read (or even a two-year-old for that matter), the child has the right to be given every encouragement. The fact that he or she might later be “bored” when joining a class of non-readers at child school is the teacher’s affair. It is up to the teacher to see that such a child is given more advanced reading material.

Similarly, the child who still cannot read by the time he goes to junior school at the age of seven should be given every help by teachers and parents alike. They should make certain that he is not dyslexic(诵读困难的). If he is, a specialist’s help should immediately be sought.

Although parents should be careful not to force youngsters aged two to five to learn to read (if badly done it could put them off reading for life), there is no harm in preparing them for simple recognition of letters by labeling (标明) various items in their room. For instance, tie a nice piece of cardboard to their bed with BED written in neat, big letters.

Should the young child ask his parents to teach him to read, and if the parents are capable of doing so, such an attraction should not be ignored. But the task should never be made to look like a hard job and the child should never be forced to continue, should his interest start to flag(消退).

76. This passage is mainly about _______.

 A. what qualities people teaching children reading should have

B. different age groupings of children to be taught reading

C. when and how children should be taught reading

D. various problems of children who start learning to read

77. In the writer’s opinion, children start learning to read _______.

C. by a certain rule D. from word games

78. A three-year-old child who wants to read should _______.

A. be encouraged B. go to an infant school

 C. start from fun stories D. join a class of non-readers

79. The purpose of labeling items in the room is to _______.

A. make it more colorful B. teach children to write neatly

 D. force children to develop the habit of reading

80. The writer suggests that _______.

A. children should ask their parents to teach them to read

Most countries need goods and services from other countries, and so it is necessary for countries to trade with each other. This trade between countries is known as international trade. Foreign trade is very important for the rise of the standard of living in the world. Every country must meet its needs by continuing to sell some goods and buy raw materials. Many products would disappear from some countries’ market without international trade. In addition, many factories would cease (停止) production if they were unable to get certain raw materials through international trade.

International trade is very important to consumers (消费者) in all countries. For example, imagine both a Japanese citizen and a Chinese citizen have ten dollars to spend. They both want a watch and a radio. Because of skills and wages the following prices exist for these products.

Chinese Produced

Japanese Produced

Watch $5.00

Watch$10.00

Radio $10.00

Radio $5.00

If the Chinese buys only Chinese products, he can own only the watch and have five dollars left over, or own only the radio. The same situation exists for the Japanese citizen if he buys only Japanese products. However, if they both buy Chinese watches and Japanese radios, they both can buy two products for their ten dollars. As a result, the standard of living is higher.

71. For most countries international trade is necessary because ______.

D. Without foreign trade some factories would stop production.

A. the same product may have different prices in different countries

B

Travel has been a considerable part of my life and I have different kinds of journeys to many parts of the world. Often in my travels, I was alone, travelling under difficult conditions in wartime, and I have flown over the oceans many times when I wanted to get quickly from one place to another. But a sea voyage, especially a long one, has something unusual of its own, and after taking a few of them, I became interested in the reasons why people take such trips and how they are affected by them. That is why I wanted to write LIFE NUMBER TWO.

Some people go for escape from grief(悲伤)or failure, some from a wish not to be very long in one place in the world. Others go to celebrate a marriage, or are a retirement(退休),and many people take voyages to enjoy a luxury(享乐)they do not have at home and for shipboard fun. When you put all these motives into a forced companionship(伙伴关系) and sometimes an unpleasant one—a voyage can be like a mirror held up to modern life with all its variety. Voyages can be boring but they can give some passengers new view on life, renew courage and awaken a sense of the size of the world.

There are many books about ocean voyages, but as a rule they are magazines or diaries of travel. LIFE NUMBER TWO is a novel written not mainly to show shipboard life but to tell the stories of a few people on board, trying their past lives and their possible futures into the narrative (叙述). It also deals with some modern social problems worth our consideration.

Many people believe that English is an easy language. Indeed, the author of a popular book on the history of English says that English “… has a grammar of great  51 ”. But if you have read the  52  articles in this series, it will be clear that I have a  53  opinion. My intention  54 , not always so seriously, that English is in fact full of difficulties to the non-native speakers. The biggest book of English grammar contains 1800 pages and  55 3 kilos, which doesn’t necessarily prove that English grammar is  56 , but it  57 , undoubtedly, show that there is a lot of  58 !

So is English easy or not? Actually, English can be said to be difficult  59  we can point to many other languages that are  60 . But English, like every language, is a hugely complex system  61  many aspects(方面). It may be that some aspects of the language system are easier in English but  62  aspects are more difficult. For example, English spelling is more difficult than German spelling, but on the other hand adjectives are easier to use in English because they do not  63  their endings as they do in  64 .

And it seems that some languages are easier at the beginning but get  65  harder,   66  for other languages the opposite is true. Most people have heard of Shakespeare and probably know something of the plays that he wrote. However, not everybody knows much about the life of this remarkable man, except perhaps that he was born in the market town of Stratford-upon-Avon and that he married a woman called Anne Hathaway. We know nothing of his school life. We do not know, for example, how long it lasted, but we presume(推测)that he attended the local grammar school, where the principal subject taught was Latin.

Nothing certain is known of what he did between the time he left school and his departure(出发)for London. According to a local legend, he was beaten and even put in prison for stealing rabbits and deer from the estate of neighbouring landowner, Sir Thomas Lucy. It is said that because of this he was forced to run away from his native place. A different legend says that he was apprenticed(做学徒)to a Stratford butcher, but did not like the life and for this reason decided to leave Stratford.

Whatever caused him to leave the town of his birth, the world can be grateful that he did so. What is certain is that he set his foot on the road to fame when he arrived in London. It is said that at first he was without money or friends there, but that he earned a little by taking care of the horses of the gentleman who attended the plays at the theatre. They stopped and spoke to him. They found his conversations so brilliant(有才气的)that finally he was invited to join their company.
