The making of glass is a very old industry—at least 4,500 years old. Glass has many extraordinary qualities and it is frequently being used in new ways.

One of the most interesting new uses for glass is in telephone communication. Scientists have developed glass fibres (纤维) as thin as human hair which are designed to carry light signals. When the light reaches the other end, it is first changed into electrical signals, which are in turn converted (转变) into sound messages.

Called light-wave communication, the new system was used successfully in an experiment in Chicago in 1977. During the experiment two glass fibres were able to carry 672 conversations at the same time. The light-wave cable, containing 144 glass fibres, has the capacity (容量) to carry 50,000 conversations at the same time. The lightwave communication system has two important advantages. First the glass fibre cables are smaller and weigh less than copper (铜) cables; second, they cost less.

56. One of the extraordinary qualities of glass is that it can carry______.

 A. any signal             B. light signals

59. From the passage, you can tell that people prefer glass fibre cables to copper cables because ______.

 A. glass fibre is easier to make

 B. glass fibre is less expensive

 C. glass fibre is more up to date

 D. glass fibre delivers messages directly

60. Which of the following statements best expresses the main idea of the passage?

Denny Parker lived in a bad place. Because of a youth gang(帮派), he wanted to leave the area. The gang often caused trouble in the high school.
As he was walking out of history class one day, Denny bumped into (ran into) another student. “Sorry,” he said, and kept walking. But he was stopped. Turning around, he found himself facing a very large, angry boy. It was Bill Douglas, a member of the gang!
“Hey, you pushed me!” Bill cried.
“Come on, Bill,” answered Denny. “I said I was sorry.”
“You’re going to be sorry,” Bill said. “I will give you a lesson after school.”
“Oh, no,” thought Denny, hurrying to his next class. “I’m in trouble now.” The more he thought about it, the more fearful he became.
Then a word came to Denny’s mind—courage (勇气). He decided to face it with courage. He had nothing to lose—except a few teeth. After school, many students waited on the corner. News had spread that there would be a fight. Bill Douglas and his gang were waiting, too.
“Hey, Parker,” Bill laughed as Denny walked near. “Let me teach you a lesson.”
Denny answered loudly, “Well, come on. I’m not afraid. ”
There was silence. Then the students began to applaud (鼓掌). They cried, “Denny! Denny!” The noise was very loud. The gang members ran away one by one. Denny won with his courage.

There have been many great inventions, things that changed the way we live. The first great invention was one that is still very important today—the wheel. This made it easier to carry heavy things and to travel long distance.

For hundreds of years after that there were few inventions that had as much effect(影响)as the wheel. Then in the early 1800’s the world started to change. There was little unknown land left in the world. People didn’t have to explore much any more. They began to work instead to make life better.

In the second half of the 19th century many great inventions were made. Among them were the camera, the electric light and radio. These all became a big part of our life today.

The first part of the 20th century saw more great inventions. The helicopter in 1909. Sound movies in 1926. The computer in 1928. And jet planes in 1930. This was also a time when a new material was first made. Nylon came out in 1935. It changed the kind of clothes people wear.

The middle part of the 20th century brought new ways to help people get over diseases. They worked very well. They made people healthier and let them live long lives. By the 1960’s most people could expect to live to be at least 60.

By this time most people had a very good life. Of course new inventions continued to be made. But man now had a desire to explore again. The world is known to man but stars are not yet. Man began looking for ways to go into space. Russia made the first step. Then the United States took a step. Since then other countries, including China and Japan, have made their steps into space.

In 1969 man took his biggest step away from earth. Americans first walked on the moon. This is certainly just a beginning though. New inventions will someday allow us to do things we have never yet dreamed of.

64. In the early 1800’s, people began to work in order to make ___.

   A. a trip into space B. explorations C. life better D. discoveries

65. Nylon came out nearly at the same time as ___.

 A. jet planes B. the radio C. the camera D. the movies

66. Man didn’t have a desire to explore a lot ___.

   A. until the 20th century B. in the 1960’s

   C. in the last two centuries D. at the beginning of the 1800’s

67. This passage talks mainly about ____.

   A. why cars were very important B. which country made the first step into space

   C. how inventions affect people’s lives     D. when the electric light was invented

Having returned from her round trip, the angry woman stood outside the ticket office of the station. “The railway owes me £12,” she said to Hart Jenks, the young man working at the office. “You sold me a ticket for May 22nd, but there was no ship from Jersey that night. So my daughter and I had to stay in a hotel. It cost me £ 12.” Harry was worried; he remembered selling the woman a return ticket. “Come into the office, Madam,” he said politely.“I’ll just check the Jersey time table for May 22nd.”

The woman and her little girl followed him inside. She was quite right, as Harrison discovered. There was no sailing on May 22nd. How could he have made such a careless mistake? He shouldn’t have sold her a ticket that day. Wondering what to do, he smiled at the child. “You look sunburst,” he said to her. “Did you have a nice holiday in Jersey?”

“Yes,” she answered, shyly. “The beach was lovely. And I can swim too!”

“That’s fine,” said Harry. “My little girl can’t swim a bit yet. Of course, she’s only three...”

“I’m four,” the child said proudly “I’ll be four and a half.”

Harry turned to the mother. “I remember your ticket, Madam,” he said. “But you didn’t get one for your daughter, did you?” “Err, well,” the woman looked at the child. “I mean…, she hasn’t started school yet. She’s only four.”

“A four-year-old child must have a ticket, Madam. A child’s return ticket to Jersey costs..., let me see...£ 13.50. So if the railway pays your hotel, you will owe £ 1.50. The law is the law, but since the fault was mine...” The woman stood up, took the child’s hand and left the office.

This is the age of technological change, the disappearance of class difference and equal educational opportunities for everyone. Many old-fashioned ideas about what our children ought to do in life are no longer preferable. Apart from the traditional academic careers (生涯、职业) in science, medicine, law, and the arts, we also need skilled technicians, technologists and businessmen. We need to modernize our industries and give an encouragement to trade. Young people should be encouraged to see the value of all trades, crafts, and professions and to look upon the career they have chosen with interest and pride.

In the old days sons followed their father’s trade or profession and took up the occupation that best suited the interests of the family and possibly of society too. Total freedom in the choice of a career is often a burden to the individual and a danger to society.

Nowadays most young people are encouraged to choose their own careers according to their personal abilities and interests. This concern for the vocational aspect of a career is all very well received, but young people are often poor judges of their own abilities and need guidance in the choice of a career.

73. Traditionally, people didn’t respect __________.

74. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

 C. In the old days young people had total freedom in the choice of a career.

 D. In the old days young people usually took a career that was accepted by the society.

75. Which of the following may be the problem when young people choose their career?

 A. They haven’t the freedom to make their own decisions.

 B. They are not good at judging their own abilities.

 C. They have to follow some people’s advice.

 D. They don’t know their real interests.

书面表达:

One possible version:

One day, Xiao Ming saw a little girl fall over. He wanted to help the girl up, but his mother stopped him and said, “Don’t do that, otherwise others will think it was you who knocked her down.” Another day, the mother was shocked to see Xiao Ming just let the fallen oil bottle be. And Xiao Ming said to his mother, “If I had straightened the bottle up, you would have thought that I did it.”

I disagree with what the mother did in the story. I think parents should set a good example to their children .They should not only care for their children’s health, but their minds. They should let their children know it is a pleasure to help others who are in trouble. We live in the society which is a big family for all of us.

Everyone should do something good to build up our society, right?

W: Do you have a plan for your holidays?
M: Yes. I’ll go back to my hometown.
W: To see your grandparents?
M: Yes, and also do some farming.
W: You mean you know how to farm?
M: Yes. I did that every summer during holidays.
W: I didn’t know that a city boy can do farm work. Can I go there with you? I’d like to learn to do
  some farming.
M: Sure, my grandparents would be very happy to see you.
W: Are you sure?
M: I’m sure. They are very kind people.
Text 7

Text 8
M: Hi, Shirley, going to the football game today?
W: Not to it. I’m planning to watch it on television.
M: Why is that? Do you feel too poor close to the end of the month?
W: Money’s not the problem. I find it easier to follow football on television than in the stadium.

When I see the game in person, I feel as if I’m too far away from the action. And I always lose

 track of the ball.
M: I know just what you mean. Besides, on television the new cameras they use give you super

views of all the plays. But there’s always so much excitement. People are cheering and shouting

when I’m there in person. And I end up cheering along with everyone else.
W: You’re right there. But I’d like to know exactly what I’m shouting for. And if I can’t even see

who has the ball, I can’t get very excited. So I really prefer watching it on television.
M: I see your point. Well, enjoy the game.
W: You, too.
Text 9
M: Hey, Ellen! How are you?
W: I’m fine, Bob. Aren’t you glad that the term is over?
M: Yep! Are you going to the rock concert Friday night?
W: I haven’t thought much about it. Are you?
M: Sure. Would you like to go with me?
W: Sounds like fun.
M: You’ll have to buy your own ticket, though.
W: Are you running out of money again? Let me treat you.
M: Wow! When did you get so much money?
W: You know. I’m a waitress at the Student Center. Anyway, now that final exams are almost over,

 I’d love a night out.
M: Since you’ve been so great about buying the tickets, why don’t I take us out to dinner?
W: You’ve got a deal. Let’s buy the tickets now.

Text 10

In answer to the city government’s call to make our town cleaner and more beautiful, our class, forty of us in all, did some volunteer work yesterday. It was a fine Sunday morning. We gathered at the school gate at 7:30. Then we went to a street park on foot. It took us just 20 minutes to get there. We then divided ourselves into four ten-person groups. Each group had its work to do. Group one was to pick up the trash, group two to pull up weeds, group three to clean the park benches and group four to sweep the floor. We worked for about an hour when it suddenly began to rain hard. Since none of us had brought umbrellas with us, we had to stop working and wait for the rain to stop. Fortunately, the rain did not last very long. We finished our work before ten. We felt very happy about what we had done.
