第三部分 阅读理解 (共5篇15小题,每题2分,满分30分)

(A)

We are all called upon to make a speech at some point in life, but most of us don’t do a very good job. This article gives some suggestions on how to give an effective speech.

So, you have to give a speech---and you’re terrified. You get nervous, you forget what you want to say, you stumble over words, you talk too long, and you bore your audience. Later you think, “Thank goodness, it’s over. I’m just not good at public speaking. I hope I never have to do that again.”

Cheer up! It doesn’t have to be that bad. Here are some simple steps to take the pain out of speech making. Ask yourself the purpose of your speech. What is the occasion? Why are you speaking? Then, gather as many facts as you can on your subject. Spend plenty of time doing your research. Then spend plenty of time organizing your material so that your speech is clear and easy to follow. Use as many examples as possible, and use pictures, charts, and graphs if they help you make your points more clearly. Never forget your audience. Don’t talk over their heads. Treat your audience with respect. They will appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Just remember: be prepared. Know your subject, your audience, and the occasion. Be brief. Say what you have to say and then stop. And be yourself. Let your personality come through so that you make person-to-person contact with your audience.

If you follow these simple steps, you’ll see that you don’t have to be afraid of public speaking. In fact, you may find the experience so enjoyable that you volunteer to make more speeches! You’re not convinced yet? Give it a try and see what happens.

46. Paragraph 2 implies that many people_____.

Meeting foreigners to improve language skills

An elder sister once told me, “The worst thing in learning a language is that you find nowhere to use it at all. And in the end it will get rusty(荒疏), no matter how well you have learnt it. So, how can we find more opportunities to practice English?”

God bless me. I’m very lucky today because I found “the Language Exchange”column in the advertising of an English magazine. Many people badly want a language learning partner, as I do. Come and read the advertisement.

In the United States, friends can be close, constant(忠实的), intense, generous(慷慨的), and real, yet fade away in a short time if circumstances(环境)change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship where it left out and are delighted.

In the States, you can feel free to visit people’s homes, share their holidays, enjoy their children and their lies without fear that you are taking on a lasting obligation(负担). Do not hesitate to accept hospitality(款待)because you can’t give it in … welcome or for various other reasons, such as crowded space, language difficulties, or family custom, outsiders are not invited into homes.

In the United States both methods are used, but it is often considered more friendly to invite a person to one’s home than to go to a public place, except in purely business relationships. So, if your host or hostess brings you home, do not feel that you are being shown inferior(次的)treatment.

Don’t feel neglected if you do not find flowers awaiting you in your hotel room either. Flowers are very expensive there, hotel delivery is uncertain, arrival times are delayed, changed, or canceled so flowers are not customarily sent as a welcoming touch. Please do not feel unwanted! Outward signs vary in different lands, the inward welcome is what matters, and this will be real.

52.In the United States, you will find friendships      if circumstances change.

    A.die suddenly B.pass away C.disappear gradually D.last forever

53.Americans      their foreign friends to make a return for their hospitality.

    A.ask B.wish C.never allow D.don’t expect

54.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?     .

A.Flowers are available at all time B.Flowers are expensive

C.Flowers are signs of outward welcome

D.Flowers are not necessarily sent to guests

According to psychologists(心理学家), an emotion (情感)  is aroused when a man or animal views something as either bad or good. When a person feels like running away from something that he thinks will hurt him, we call this emotion fear. If the person wants to remove the danger by attacking it, we call the emotion anger. The emotions of joy and love are aroused when we think something can help us. An emotion does not have to be created by something in the outside world. It can be created by a person's thoughts.

Everyone has emotions. Many psychologists believe that infants(婴儿) are born without emotions. They believe children learn emotions just as they learn to read and write. A growing child not only learns his emotions but learns how to act in certain situations because of an emotion.

Psychologists think that there are two types of emotion: positive and negative. Positive emotions include love, liking, joy, delight, and hope. They are aroused by something that appeals(求助于) to a person. Negative emotions make a person unhappy or dissatisfied. They include anger, fear, despair, sadness, and disgust(讨厌) in growing up, a person learns to cope with the negative emotions in order to be happy.

Emotions may be weak or strong. Some strong emotions are so unpleasant that a person will try any means to escape from them. in order to feel happy, the person may choose unusual ways to avoid the emotion.

Strong emotions can make it hard to think and to solve problems. They may prevent a person from learning or paying attention to what he is doing. For example, a student taking an examination may be so worried about failing that he cannot think properly. The worry drains valuable mental energy he needs for the examination.

55. We learn from the passage that an emotion is created by something________.

   A. one thinks bad or good B. one feels in danger

   C. one faces in the outside world D. one tries to escape from real life

56. Which of the following is NOT true?

   A. Children learn emotions as they grow up.

  B. Babies are born with emotions.

    C. Emotions fall into two types in general

    D. People can cope with the negative emotions in life.

57. As used in the last sentence, the word "drains" means_________.

A. stops B. ties C. weakens D. flows gradually

Dear editor,

I’m writing to tell you about the arguments on whether students of Senior Three should go in for sports or not.

More than half of the students think we should exercise every day because health is the most important. You can do nothing without it. Sports and exercise can make us strong and energetic.

On the other hand, 45% of us believe it a waste of time to take exercise. Also, it’s very tiring. After having sports, we are too excited to get down to our study. We may even get hurt in sports.

And I think it’s true that we should devote ourselves to the lessons, but sports make our brains relaxed and enable us to have a sound sleep every night. The efficience of revision will surely be improved.

    Best wishes!
