Remember your first romantic disappointment? Remember the pain and unhappiness of breaking-up ----- uncertainty? Winne recalls feeling very sad after her first true love deserted her. My mum came into my room carrying a beautiful nightgown and handed it to me, gave me a hug and said, “I know you are feeling very heartbroken. I thought you could use something to make you feel beautiful right now.” The nightgown didn’t make Winne’s hurt go away, but she knew that her mother understood and cared about her feelings.

As a parent, much as you want to make it all better for your teen, give them space. Tell him or her that breakups are hard and you are there for him whenever he wants to speak to you. Then let go.

Teenage girls often deal with break-ups by talking on the phone with their friends or diving into the Internet for a long chat. They review all the hurts and pains which are being cured. Boys react to broken relationships differently. Boys often become angry since that, unfortunately, is the only emotional choice that society accepts for boys. Some boys hide their pain. Respect your teen, when a relationship breaks up. It takes time to get over it, and the only way to get through that is to get through it.

Sometimes teenagers get into trouble while trying to feel accepted again or win back a loved one. Keep reaching out to troubled teenagers. At first, teens will refuse a parent’s attempts to help. Don’t be afraid to insist.

Teen break-ups can cause heart-wrenching pain, but sooner or later teenagers should be ready to date again. How can you make your child toward a healthy relationship? Teens are likely to meet others like themselves through activities. The secret to attracting good boys or girls is to become your own independent person who feels good about who she is and what she’s about.

The trial of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein in Baghdad has been delayed until after parliamentary elections. The elections will take place on Thursday. The trial is to continue on December twenty–first.

Saddam Hussein is on trial with seven other men. The charges involve the killing of more than one hundred forty people from the Shiite town of Dujail, north of Baghdad. They were executed after an attack directed at Saddam Hussein in 1982.

Gunmen from a Shiite party fired at a vehicle in which he rode through the town. The Iraqi leader was rescued after several hours of fighting. Later, his security forces attacked Dujail. They destroyed houses and businesses, and took away most of the men. Many never returned. The trial began on October nineteenth. The seven other men charged include Saddam Hussein’s half- brother Barzan Ibrahim. He was the Iraqi intelligence chief at the time of the killings. Another is Taha Yassin Ramadan. He was vice president from 1991 to 2003. A third defendant is Awad Haman Bander Sadun. He was chief of Iraq’s Revolutionary Court. He signed death sentence in connection with Dujail killings.

A group of five judges will decide the case. A chief investigating judge questions those who give evidence in the court. So far, those witnesses have described watching close family members being questioned, tortured and killed. They have told how the security forces destroyed crops and property in Dujail. And they have described being held for years in the Abu Ghraib prison. The men on trial, however, say the witnesses have not named them as connected in any way to these crimes.

Iraqi and American officials planned the trial after American troops captured Saddam Hussein in 2003. The officials say holding the trial in the country provides a good example for a democratic Iraq. But violence has interfered with the trial. Two defense lawyers have been killed. Another has resigned. And officials have said they discovered a plot to attack the courtroom. Also, one of the judges left the trial when he learned that one of the defendants had signed an order for the death of his brother.

The former president could be executed if found guilty of the Dujail killings. But Iraqi government lawyers are preparing twelve other cases that could be brought against him in the future.

60. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

  A. The trial of Saddam Hussein has been put off because he will take part in the elections.

“Jarawa turn hostile (敌意的)” screamed the headline from the local paper.

Angrily, it reported how primitive (原始) tribesmen came out of the jungle armed with bows, arrows and spears, attacked a village in India’s Middle Andaman Island and looted (掠夺) tools, food, clothes, cash and jewellry. It was the first such attack in seven years.

It has given us an indication that the Jarawa remain untamed primitive or a cry for help from man’s earliest ancestors, their forests and their lifestyle, their existence under threat.

“It is usual that some hunters enter Jarawa reserve areas to hunt wild animals,” an officer frankly notes in an internal report on April’s attack, obtained by Reuters (路透社). Some of the hunters, he said, had stolen honey buried by the Jarawa and destroyed the carved containers used to store it. Honey is the only food the Jarawa store, one of the most precious things they have. Angry, they had hit back.

“It is really frightening,” said author Mukherjee. “The surest way to kill hunter-gatherers is to take away their territory.”

The Jarawa are one of four ancient Negroid tribes barely surviving on the Andamans. Last month, Indian scientists said DNA evidence suggested they were direct descendents of man’s earliest ancestors, who migrated from Africa 65,000 to 70,000 years ago, only to be trapped on the islands by rising seawater. Until just a few years ago, the Jarawa lived in separation, preserving a simple lifestyle in their own Garden of Eden (伊甸园). Then the government built a road through their forest.

The 343-km Andaman Trunk Road (ATR), completed in 1989, was designed as an economic lifeline to link the island chain. “The road may look like a little strip of land cutting through the forest, but it is a road opening the Jarawa up not just to germs but to all kinds of outside influence,” said Mukherjee. “Outsiders induce addictions. They supply them with tobacco or alcohol, so the Jarawa keep coming back, and have to bring their forest resources out to feed their addictions.”

In the old days, the Jarawa used to chase outsiders away with their bows and arrows. In just a few years since the road was opened, many have learned basic Hindi(印地语), as well as modern vices (恶习). “They used to come for food, coconuts and bananas,” said M. Rajendran, who runs a roadside tea shop on the edge of the reserve. “Now, they come for tobacco and alcohol.”

64. What is the most probable cause of the Jarawa’s attacking the village?

A. Their living conditions were in a bad state.

B. The Jarawa were angry with the villagers.

C. Some of the villagers stole Jarawa’s honey and destroyed their honey containers.

D. The Jarawa were so hungry that they wanted to find food for themselves.

65. Which statement about the Jarawa is NOT TRUE?

A. The Jarawa were the direct descendents of man’s earliest ancestors.

B. The Jarawa are living a life completely cut off from the world.

C. The Jarawa are one of four ancient Negroid tribes barely surviving on the Andaman.

D. The Jarawa came from Africa.

66. Which of the following is NOT the result that the ATR brings about to the Jarawa?

A. They are threatened by germs.

B. The forests are being destroyed.

C. They become addicted to tobacco and alcohol.

D. They keep the outsiders out of their territory.

67. What’s the author’s attitude to the Jarawa’s attack in the text?

A. The Jarawa tribesmen are primitive.

B. The Jarawa have no choice but to do so.

C. The Jarawa are hard to control.

D. They are so untamed that they often rob things of the outsiders.

D

Shopping with plastic is now safer than ever

Welcome to your new debit card and a new, safer way of making purchases. Now, instead of signing your name on a sales slip (纸条) at the checkout to confirm your purchase, your may be asked to tap your 4 – digit personal identification number (PIN) into a special keypad.

If you already have a card, then your new card may look similar to this. But there is one important difference. It contains a special electronic chip which is programmed to respond to your PIN alone.

As more and more shops are linked to the Chip and PIN system, there will be less possibility for signature fraud(签名诈骗行为) and card purchases will become safer than ever.

How to use your new card

You use your card at shops as you would at a cash machine. Your card is put into a special card reader at the checkout, you then personally key in your secret 4 – digit PIN and your purchase is authorized (认可) safely. Although keypads will be protected to some extent against curious eyes, you should still try to prevent people looking over your shoulder as you key in your PIN ---- just as you would at a cash machine. Your PIN does not appear on the shop’s checkout screen when you key it in.

However, this card may not be available if you are outside the UK. To avoid any inconvenience, should this happen to you, it is recommended that you always carry something else for payment, e.g. debit cards, credit cards or traveler’s cheques with you when traveling internationally.

In any archaeological study that includes a dig, the procedures are basically the same: 1)selecting a site 2)hiring local workmen 3)surveying the site and dividing it into sections 4)digging trenches to locate levels and places to excavate 5) mapping architectural features 6)developing a coding system that shows the exact spot where an object is found 7)and recording ,

tagging, cleaning and storing excavated materials

Neilson C. Debevoise once described the typical “route” of excavated pottery. Workers reported an object to staff members before removing it from the ground. The date, level, location and other important information were written on a piece of paper and placed with the object. At noon the objects were brought in from the field to the registry room where they were given a preliminary cleaning. Registry numbers were written in waterproof Indian ink on a portion of the object previously painted with shellac. The shellac prevented the ink from soaking into the object, furnished a good writing surface, and made it possible to remove the number in a moment. From the registry room objects were sent to the drafting department. If a clay pot, for example, was of a new type, a scale drawing was made on graph paper. Measurement of the top, greatest diameter, base, height, color of the glaze, if any, the quality and texture of the body and the quality of the workmanship were recorded in paper with the drawing. When the drafting department had completed its work the materials were placed on the storage shelves, grouped according to type and finally shipped to museums. Today, the steps of a dig remain basically the same, although specific techniques vary.

If I were a scientist, I would design such a huge mirror. It would measure 100miles long and 60 miles wide, and be placed in space above the earth. It would be used to catch sunlight and direct it upon the earth.

Why do I want to do this? As we know, the sun rays could be helpful in many ways. Firstly, they could be used to light the cities at night. Secondly, the warm rays could stop frosts, which might. harm crops and fruit trees. Thirdly, they could melt dangerous icebergs in the ocean. Last but not least, they could change the cloud movement and bring rain to wherever it is needed
