How to eat healthfully can be especially complex for working women who often have neither the desire nor the time to cook for themselves ( or for anyone else). Registered dietitian(营养专家) Barhara Morrissey suggests that a few simple rules can help.

“Go for nutrient dense foods,” she suggests, “foods that contain a multiple of nutrients. For example, select whole wheat bread as a breakfast food, rather than coffee cake. Or drink orange juice rather than orange drink, which contains only a small percentage of real juice---the rest is largely colored sugar water. You just can’t compare the value of these foods, the nutrient dense ones are so superior,” she emphasizes.

Morrissey believes that variety is not only the spice of life---it’s the foundation of a healthful diet. Diets which a re based on one or two foods are not only virtually impossible to keep up the strength, they can be very harmful, she says, because nutrients aren’t supplied in sufficient amounts or balance.

According to Morrissey, trying to find a diet that can cure your illnesses, or make you superwoman is a fruitless search. As women, many of us are too concerned with staying thin, she says ,and we believe that vitamins are some kind of magic cure to replace food.

“We need carbohydrates, protein and fat---they are like the wood in the fireplace. The vitamins and minerals are like the match, the spark, for the fuel,” she explains. “We need them all, but in a very different proportions. And if the fuel isn’t there, the spark is useless.”

A. an effort with no results      B. a search for a diet without fruits

C. a research on fruitless diet D. a diet serving as medicine

4. Many women take it for granted, according to passage, that _______________

  A. a balanced diet can result in being fat

  B. staying thin and healthy are both possible

  C. lack of variety in diets leads to staying thin

  D. vitamins are some kind of substitutions for food

5. By “if the fuel isn’t there, the spark is useless”, the author means____________

  D. without carbohydrates, protein and fat, vitamins and minerals are of no use

Dr Wiseman started the “laugh lab” project in September 2001. It is the largest study of humor. Participants(参加者)are invited to log on  to the laugh lab website, give a few personal details , tell their favorite jokes and judge the jokes told by other people.

The project will last for a year, and the organizers hope to finally discover the world’s funniest joke. But there is also a serious purpose, the researches want know what people from different nations and cultures find funny. And they want to find out the differences between the male and female sense of humor. The idea is that if we want to understand each other, we have to find out what make s us laugh.

This is a subject that has long interested psychologists (心理学家) and philosophers(哲学家). Most of the time, people are not completely honest. We do things that society expects us to and say things that help us get what we want. But laughing cannot be controlled. When we laugh, we tell the truth about ourselves. By December 2001 over 10,000 jokes had been submitted. This gave the scientists enough evidence to make early conclusions. It seems that men and women do have different senses of humor, for instance.

“our findings show the major differences in the ways in which males and females use humor,” said Dr Wiseman. “Males use humor to appear superior(优越的) to others, while women are more skilled in languages and prefer word play.”

Researchers also found that there really is such a thing as a national sense of humor. The British enjoy what is usually called “toilet humor”. But the French like their jokes short and sharp: “You’re a high priced lawyer. Will you answer two questions for $500?” “Yes. What’s the second question?”

The Germans are famous for not having a sense of humor. But the survey found that German participants were more likely to find submitted jokes funny than any other nationality. Perhaps that proves the point. Is this joke funny? I don’t know, but let’s say yes, just to be safe.

Dr Wiseman and his workmates also submitted jokes created by computer. But none of those who took part in the survey found any of them amusing. Perhaps this is relief. Computers already seem like they can do everything. At least they should leave the funny stuff to us.

11. Scientist started the “laugh lab” project ____________

  A. to find the funniest joke in European countries

  B. to know what funny people are from different nations and cultures

  C. to find out the differences between the male and female sense of humor

  D. to get more personal details about participants

12. We can infer from the passage that ______________

  A. most of the people all over the world are completely honest

  B. psychologists and philosophers take interest in the “laugh lab” Project

  C. ordinary people are not interested in the “laugh lab” project at all

  D. people tell the truth about themselves only when they laugh

13. The writer gave the examples of the British, the French and the Germans ___________

  A. to show that the French people have a better sense of humor

  B. to prove the British people have a sense of “toilet humor”

  C. to show people from different nations have different senses of humor

  D. to prove that the Germans have no sense of humor

14. We can find French jokes ___________

  A. more funny B. lack of humor C. short and sharp D. less interesting

15. Which statement is TRUE according to the passage?

  A. The jokes by computer are less funny than those by humans

  C. Males are better at word play compared with women

  D. Females like to use humor to show that they are superior

             D

To find how the name Canada came about we must go back to the 16th century. At that time, the French dreamed of disclosing and controlling more land, of expanding(扩展)trade beyond(超出) their borders and of spreading their faith(信仰) across the world .In 1535, Francois I ,King of France, ordered a navigator (航海家) named Jacques Cartier to explore(探险) the New World and search for a passage to India.

Cartier first arrived at the Gulf of the St. Lawrence, which he wanted to explore. He did not know what to expect but he hoped that this Gulf was just an arm of the ocean between two islands. If it was, he would soon be on his way to the Far East. So he sailed upstream along the St. Lawrence River. However, instead or reaching Asia he arrived at Quebec or Stadacona,as the Indians called it.It was at this point that the term “ Canada” entered the country’s history. Apparently the word “Canada” came from an Indian work “Kanata”, which means community or village. Cartier first used it when he referred to Stadacona or Quebec. What a huge “ village” Canada is!

B.Cartier mistook Quebec for Stadacona

C. Stadacona was a village in Quebec

D. Stadacona was what the Indians called Quebec then

A. a small town in Stadacona B. the place called Quebec

C. a long water passage D. a huge village including Quebec and Stadacona
