The private automobile(私家车) has long played an important role in the United States. In fact, it has become a necessary and important part of the American way of life. In 1986, sixty-nine percent of American families owned at least one car, and thirty-eight percent had more than one. By giving workers rapid transportation, the automobile has freed them from having to live near their place of work. This has encouraged the growth of the cities, but it has also led to traffic problems.
For farm families the automobile is very helpful. It has made it possible for them to travel to town very often for business and for pleasure, and also to transport their children to distant schools.
Family life has been affected in various ways. The car helps to keep families together when it is used for picnics, outings, and other shared experiences. However, when teenage children have the use of the car, their parents can’t keep an eye on them. There is a great danger if the driver has been drinking alcohol or taking drugs—or is “showing off ” by speeding or breaking other traffic laws. Mothers of victims(受害者) of such accidents have formed an organization called MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving). These women want to prevent further tragedies(悲剧). They have worked to encourage the government to limit the youngest drinking age. Students have formed a similar organization, SADD(Students Against Drunk Driving) and are spreading the same message among their friends.
For many Americans the automobile is a necessity. But for some, it is also a mark of social position and for young people, a sign of becoming an adult. Altogether, cars mean very much to Americans.
56.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the text?
A. Cars have encouraged the growth of the cities.
B. Cars can bring families together when they go for picnics.
C. Cars have enabled people to live far from their place of work.
D. Cars help city families to transport their children to faraway schools.
57.What has been done to deal with the problem of drunk driving?
A. Parents have paid more attention to their children.
B. Some organizations have been set up against drunk driving.
C. Mothers have tried to persuade their children not to drink alcohol.
D. University students have asked the government to solve the problem.
58.We can infer from the text that __________ in America.
A. it will be more difficult for people to get new cars.
B. parents will not allow their children to have their own cars.
C. the government will encourage people to use public transportation.
D. cars will still be popular though they have caused many problems.

One thing that really gets up my nose is breathing other people’s cigarette smoke against my will. It’s about time that smoking in public places in this country was stamped out once and for all.
There is noting worse than coming home from a bar or club after an evening out and finding that your clothes smell disgusting because they have been saturated (浸透的) with cigarette smoke. I’m not the only one who is bored with this, and I’m not some born non-smoker. I just wish that I had a choice whether or not I came home smelling like a dirty ashtray.
Another thing that I really hate is walking down the street behind someone smoking a cigarette. Every time they breathe, out comes that cloud of stale (难闻的) smoke and you walk straight into it and aside from crossing over to the other side of the street. There is very little you can do about it. It is not a pleasant experience and it is one I could live quite happily without.
I know there are a lot of people in this country that smoke and I’ll be willing to bet that some that are reading this article are fed up with people who don’t smoke always harping on (唠叨) about their “bad habit” and telling them what to do. The simple fact is that smokers are affecting the health of non-smokers as well as their own. People die each year just because they have breathed other people’s smoke and that is something we really should be taking seriously. In my opinion an outright ban on smoking in public places is the only way forward.
59.The underlined phrase “get up one’s nose” in Paragraph1 means___________.
A. to smell something out
B. to look up at the sky
C. to turn one’s nose towards something
D. to make sb. angry
60.From the second paragraph, we can learn that the author______________.
A. is not willing to come home from a bar or club late at night
B. has an ashtray in his home
C. finds the smell of cigarettes disgusting
D. often smokes a lot of cigarettes in a bar
61.The author is strongly against___________.
A. smoking behind someone while walking down the streets
B. breathing in cigarette smoke others have breathed out
C. a life without cigarettes
D. walking across the street but there is nothing he can do about
62.In the end of the passage, the writer suggests that__________.
A. smoking in public places should be forbidden
B. smoking in public is not a bad habit
C. smokers should be responsible for non-smokers’ health
D. the only way to keep healthy is not to breath other people’s smoke

The other day, my friend Jane was invited to a 40th birthday party. The time printed on the invitation was 7:30pm. Jane went off with her husband, expecting a merry evening of wine, food, and song.
By 9:45, everybody was having great fun, but no food had appeared. Jane and David were restless. Other guests began whispering that they, too, were starving. But no one wanted to leave, just in case some food was about to appear. By 11:00,there was still no food, and everyone was completely off their heads. Jane and David left hungry and angry.
Their experience suggests that the words on the printed invitations need to be made clearer. Everyone reads and understands the invitations differently. Most of us would agree that 6:30-8:30pm means drinks only, go out to dinner afterwards; 8:00pm 0r 8:30pm means possible dinner, but 9:30pm and any time thereafter means no food, eat beforehand, roll up late.
But this is not always the case. If asked to a students’ party at 6:30pm, it is normal for guests not to appear before midnight, if at all, and no one cares. Being the first to arrive —looking eager —is social death. When my mother is asked to a party for 6:30,she likes to be there, if not on time, then no later than seven. My age group(late thirties) falls somewhere between the two, but because we still think we’re young, we’re probably closer to student-time than grown-up time.
The accepted custom at present is confusing (混乱的), sometimes annoying, and it often means you may go home hungry, but it does lend every party that precious element (成分) of surprise.
68.Jane and David’s story is used to show that _________.
A. party-goers usually get hungry at parties
B. party invitations can be confusing
C. people should ask for food at parties
D. birthday parties for middle-aged people are dull
69.For some young people, arriving on time for a students’ party will probably be considered_________.
A. very difficult B. particularly thoughtful
C. friendly and polite D. socially unacceptable
70. According to the writer, people in their late thirties _______.
A. are likely to arrive late for a party B. care little about the party time
C. haven’t really grown up yet D. like surprises at parties
71.What is the general idea of the text? _________.
A. It’s safe to arrive late just when food is served.
B. It’s wise to eat something before going to a party.
C. It’s important to follow social rules of party-going.
D. It’s necessary to read invitations carefully.
E
Besides giving off gases and dusts into the air, humans produce waste that is poured on the environment. Often, this waste produced by major industries and people is harmful to both nature and human life.
One of the main causes of the large amount of dangerous waste is that people do not realize how large a problem it is. Because it can be simply removed and sent to a landfill(废渣填埋场), the problem is often believed to end there. In addition, industries have often shown an unwillingness to find ways to deal with dangerous waste because of the related expense. Many industries and governments build simple landfills to store waste, and often just pour waste chemicals into nearby bodies of water. Often, chemicals used for industrial production cause dangerous forms of waste. The amount of these chemicals has increased greatly in the past, but it is often difficult and expensive to get rid of these chemicals or to store them in a way safe to human life and the environment.
Every year, major health problems result from dangerous waste. Sadly, it is often only after someone has died or become seriously ill that governments will take measures to reduce levels of harmful waste.
Some governments have realized how serious the dangerous waste problem is and are now trying to settle this problem. They are also trying to limit the amount of waste industries are allowed to produce..
Not only governments but ordinary people as well must work together o solve the problem. They can choose not to buy those products which require the production of dangerous waste, and produce less harmful waste themselves. Many scientists think that waste production can be cut. The waste can be reduced by at least one third using existing technologies and methods.
72.What would be the best title for the text?
A. Measures of Reducing Dangerous Waste
B. Danger of Harmful waste to Mankind
C. Dangerous Waste and Water Pollution
D. Environmental Protection
73.According to the text, people _________.
A. do not produce harmful waste in their daily life
B. do not know where to place the dangerous waste
C. are not clear about how serious the dangerous waste problem is
D. are not sure about where harmful waste ends
74. What troubles industries most in dealing with the dangerous waste problem?
A. How to get government support.
B. How to increase their production.
C. How to store harmful waste..
D. How to cut down the related costs.
75. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. The polluting industries are not allowed to sell their products.
B. Present technologies have settled the harmful waste problem.
C. Everyone should obey the government rules for the problem.
D. To solve the problem requires the efforts of the whole society.
