Among various programmes , TV talk shows have covered every inch of space on daytime television. And anyone who watches them regularly knows that each one is different in style(风格).But no two shows are more opposite in content, while at the same time standing out above the rest, than the Jerry Springer and the Oprah Winfrey shows.
Jerry Springer could easily be considered as the king of “rubbish talk”. The contents on his show are as surprising as can be. For example, the show takes the ever-common talk show titles of love, sex, cheating, and hate, to a different level. Clearly, the Jerry Springer show is about the dark side of society, yet people are willing to eat up the troubles of other people’s lives.
Like Jerry Springer, Oprah Winfrey takes TV talk show to its top, but Oprah goes in the opposite direction. The show is mainly about the improvement of society and different quality of life. Contents are from teaching your children lessons, managing your work week, to getting to know your neighbors.
Compared to Oprah, the Jerry Springer show looks like poisonous waste being poured into society. Jerry ends every show with a “final word”. He makes a small speech about the entire idea of the show. Hopefully, this is the part where most people will learn something very valuable.
Clean as it is, the Oprah show is not for everyone. The show’s main viewers are middleclass Americans. Most of these people have the time, money, and ability to deal with life’s tougher problems. Jerry Springer, on the other hand, has more of a connection with the young adults of society. These are 18-to-21-year olds whose main troubles in life include love, relationship, sex, money and drug. They are the ones who see some value and lessons to be learned through the show’s exploitation.
56. Compared with other TV talk shows, both the Jerry Springer and the Oprah Winfrey are .
A. more interesting B. unusually popular
C. more detailed D. more formal
57. Though the social problems Jerry Springer talks about appear unpleasant, people who watch the shows .
A. remain interested in them B. are ready to face up to them
C. remain cold to them D. are willing to get away from them
58. Which of the following is likely to be a topic of the Oprah Winfrey show?
A. A new type of robot B. Nation hatred.
C. Family income planning. D. Street accidents.
59. We can learn from the passage that the two talk shows .
A. have become the only ones of its kind B. exploit the weaknesses in human nature
C. appear at different times of the day D. attract different people
B
A child's birthday party doesn't have to be a hassle; it can be a basket of fun, according to Beth Anaclerio, an Evaston mother of two, ages 4 and 18 months.
“Having a party at home usually requires a lot of running around on the part of the parents, and often the birthday boy or girl gets lost in wild excitement. But it really doesn't have to be that way,” said Anaclerio. Last summer, Anaclerio and her friend Jill Carlisle, a Northbrook mother of a 2-year-old, founded a home party-planning business called “A Party in a Basket”. Their goal is to help parents and children share in the fun part of party planning, like choosing the subject or making a cake, while they take care of everything.
Drawing on their experiences mothers, they have created(制作) 10 ready-to-use, home party packages. Everything a family needs to plan a party, except the cake and ice cream, is delivered to the home in a large basket.
“Our parties are aimed for children 2 to 10,” Anaclerio said, “and they're very interactive(互动) and creative in that they build a sense of drama based on a subject. For example, at the Soda Shoppe party the guests become waiters and waitresses and build wonderful ice cream creations.”
The standard $ 200 package for eight children includes a basket filled with invitations, gifts, games and prizes, paper goods, a party planner and the like. For more information, call Anaclerio at 708-864-6584 or Carlisle at 708-205-9141.

A. it brings parents and children closer together
B. guests play a part in the preparation of party
C. parents are spared the trouble of sending invitations
D. it provides a subject of conversation
62. What does the underlined word “hassle” (paragraph 1) probably mean?
A. A party designed by specialists. B. A plan requiring careful thought.
C. A situation causing difficulty or trouble. D. A demand made by guests.
63. Which of the following is most likely to be a party planner?

Grown-ups know that people and objects are solid. At the movies, we know that if we reach out to touch Tom Cruise, all we will feel is air. But does a baby have this understanding?
To see whether babies know objects are solid, T. Bower designed a method for projecting an optical illusion(视觉影像)of a hanging ball. His plan was to first give babies a real ball, one they could reach out and touch , and then to show them the illusion. If they knew that objects are solid and they reached out for the illusion and found empty air, they could be expected to show surprise in their faces and movements. All the 16-to 24- week -old babies tested were surprised when they reached for the illusion and found that the ball was not there.
Grown-ups also have a sense of object permanence. We know that if we put a box in a room and lock the door, the box will still be there when we come back. But does a baby realize that a ball that rolls under a chair does not disappear and go to never-never land?
Experiments done by Bower suggest that babies develop a sense of object permanence when they are about 18 weeks old. In his experiments, Bower used a toy train that went behind a screen. When 16-week-old and 22-week-old babies watched the toy train disappear behind the left side of the screen, they looked to the right, expecting it to reappear. If the experimenter took the train off the table and lifted the screen, all the babies seemed surprised not to see the train. This seems to show that all the babies had a sense of object permanence. But the second part of the experiment showed that this was not really the case. The researcher substituted(替换)a ball for the train when it went behind the screen. The 22-week-old babies seemed surprised and looked back to the left side for the train. But the 16-week -old babies did not seem to notice the switch(更换). Thus, the 16-week-old babies seemed to have a sense of “something permanence,” while the 22-week-old babies had a sense of object permanence related to a particular object.
64. The passage is mainly about _____.
A. babies’ sense of sight B. effects of experiments on babies
C. babies’ understanding of objects D. different tests on babies’ feelings
65. In Paragraph 3, “object permanence” means that when out of sight, an object ________.
A. still exists B. keeps its shape C. still stays solid D. is beyond reach
66. What did Bower use in his experiments?
A. A chair. B. A screen. C. A film. D. A box.
67. Which of the following statements is true?
A. The babies didn’t have a sense of direction.
B. The older babies preferred toy trains to balls.
C. The younger babies liked looking for missing objects.
D. The babies couldn’t tell a ball from its optical illusion.

Dear Tom,
It is nice to receive your email. Now I’d like to tell you something about the Palace Museum.
Palace Museum is also called the Forbidden City. It took 200,000 workers more than 14 yeas to build it. The Forbidden City was finished in 1420. As the largest museum in the world, the Palace Museum holds cultural treasures from the past 5,000 years of Chinese history. The City’s palaces have 9,9999 rooms altogether. Chinese people traditionally have thought of nine as a lucky number. Students from all over China can now visit it in groups free of charge every Tuesday. The museum is under reconstruction.
I hope you can come to China and take a look at this museum with your own eyes.
Best wishes.
Yours,
Li Ming
