Dear editor,

Last Saturday I wandered into a clothes market. I didn't really want to buy anything, I just wanted to have a look.

Then I saw a suit of clothes which was just to my taste. I asked the saleswoman how much it was. She paid no attention to my question, but urged (to try very hard to persuade) me to try it on, so I did. Well, I liked it very much, and I asked the price again. This time she answered, "240 yuan."

Wom, that was far beyond my expectations.Even if I could bargain(to talk about the conditions of a sale, agreement, or contract) with her, I still couldn't afford it, and besides, I only had less than 100 yuan with me. I put the clothes back and apologized. She stopped me and asked me how much I wanted to pay. I told her I didn't have enough money, and counted all I had in front of her, only 90 yuan or so. She thought for a while, then said,"80 yuan is OK. Then you will still have enough money to get home."I was greatly surprised and immediately bought the clothes.

On my way home, I still couldn't understand what had happened. I had only spent 80 yuan on clothes that were supposed to be worth 240 yuan. I didn't believe that the saleswoman would sell them for less than had paid for them. I couldn't help wondering how she had come up with the price of 240 yuan in the first place.

This kind of thing happens not only in Wuhan, but also in other Chinese cities. Most Chinese are wage-earners. We all hope to buy things at a fair price. Fortunately, the local government has carried out lots of measures in order to solve the problem. We hope it will achieve noticeable results.(from 21st Century, June, 18, 1997)

Every once in while you will read some article about a so-called scholar discovering material that is supposed to prove that William Shakespeare did not really write the works attributed to him. Many alternative authors have been suggested-most prominently, Christopher Marlowe and Francis Bacon. One proponent of Bacon as author of Shakespeare's plays actually looked for words like"fat and lard"and calculated how their places in the texts of the plays proved that Bacon authored them.

Any schoolboy can see the fallacy (谬误) of such an argument and yet many adult readers of newspaper articles, written by men who have never done any research on Shakespeare, are taken in by the arguments proposed against Shakespeare's authorship. It is true that we have no manuscripts (手稿) of the plays as they came from Shakespeare's hand. After all, he wrote the plays to be acted and the actors used the author's manuscripts. However, almost half the plays appeared in print under the author's name during his lifetime-which ended in 1616. A few years later, in 1623, two of Shakespeare's name appeared on the title page. They even got Ben Johnson, Shakespeare's great rival playwright, to write a poetic introduction for the folio volume (对开本的书卷).

There are other arguments I might present to prove Shakespeare's authorship. My own argument is simply this, if Shakespeare did not write the plays attributed to him, it was someone else by the same name.

83. The first paragraph tells us that some so-called scholars       .

  A. have proved that Shakespeare's works were his own

  B. have already proved that Shakespeare's work were not his own

  C. try very hard to prove that Shakespeare's work were useless

  D. try to prove that Shakespeare's works were not his own

84. Some people suggested that certain writers other than Shakespeare himself were the authors of his plays. One of them did so by .

  A. discovering words such as"fat and lard"in Bacon's plays

  B. checking up every word in Shakespeare's words

  C. comparing the use of words in Shakespeare's works with others

  D. examining the whole text of Shakespeare's works

85. According to the message, Shakespeare       .

  A. died in 1616

  B. never had manuscripts for his plays

  C. often wrote plays together with Ben Johnson

  D. published a great folio volume with 36 plays

86. In his final conclusion, the writer        .

  A. believe that someone else had written the plays for Shakespeare

  B. states that it is logical that Shakespeare's plays were written by Shakespeare

  C. does not think that Shakespeare could have written all the plays by himself

  D. believes that some of Shakespeare's friends had published their own works under the name of Shakespeare

The Chinese Government plans to move 53,000 residents from the Three Gorges (三峡) Dam area this year.

That is according to the Three Gorges Project Construction Committee under the State Council.

Most of the 53,000 are country residents, 3,000 of whom live in Central China's Hubei province. and the rest in Southwest China's Chongqing. The Three Gorges Project, which will bring about the world's largest hydropower station, will take up 632 square kilometres of land. About 1.17 million residents will have to leave their homes and 125,000 of them will have to move out of the Three Gorges Dam area. Among them, 53,000 residents will resettle in provinces along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and in rich coastal provinces in East China.

Groups of delegates selected from the people that will be moved have visited the areas where they will live, and new housing has been under construction there since March this year. The migrants are expected to settle into new homes by the end of August, so that children can start school in the new term and adults can start growing winter crops. The resettled people will get farmland as soon as they have moved in.

The Chinese Government originally planned to resettle all residents of the submerged (被水淹没的) land within the dam area but the worsening environment there led to a change to policy in 1999.

The Three Gorges Dam area suffers from serious soil erosion (侵蚀), with 40 million tons of sand and soil washed into the Yangtze River every year. The government started to plant more forests and grassland in the area three years ago to control the erosion, meaning there is not much farmland which is able to be used for new residents. That is why we are planning to move these residents to provinces that have plentiful farmland and a better economic environment.

87. 53,000 people are to move from the dam area, because .

A. China will plant more trees in the Three Gorges Dam area

B. Three Gorges Dam area suffers from serious soil erosion

C. most of the people are leading a poor life

D. all of them live in the Three Gorges Dam area which is being built

88. The underlined word"That"in the last paragraph refers to .

A. the government started to plant more forests and grassland to control the erosion

B. the Three Gorges Dam area suffers from serious soil erosion

C. there is not much farmland which is able to be used for new residents

D. 40 million tons of sand and soil are washed into the Yangtze River every year

89. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. The Three Gorges Project is the world's largest hydropower station at present.

B. 50,000 residents are from China's Chongqing, Sichuan Province.

C. All the residents haven't been to the areas where they will live.

D.The Chinese Government planned to resettle the residents along the Yangtze River at the beginning

90. The main idea of the passage is .

A. 53,000 people will move from dam area

B. the hydropower station of the Three Gorge Dam will benefit the people of China

C. a new life will begin for 53,000 residents who will move from the Three Gorge Dam area

W:Yes, I am. What about you?

M:Me, too. Forgive my asking you, but do you have to take a part - time job in the holidays?

M:No, certainly not.

W:Do you work during the holidays?

M:Well, last Christmas I did for two weeks as a postman and a door-to-door salesman. Then in the summer I spent four weeks fruit picking, and I do a bit of baby-sitting.

W:Can you get enough money to finish your education by taking part-time jobs?

M:Of course not. But I'm a top student and I can get a scholarship, from the college.

W:Where do you live then?

M:I share a flat with two other boys. It's not large but fairly tidy, and the most important point is that the rent is quite low.

It was a bit of bad luck when the man' s car broke down - he was stuck in a no-parking area. So he went into a store to borrow a pen and paper to leave a note for the traffic police. The pen, however, was like his car. It didn't work. When he decided to go back to the store to buy a pen, he found another little problem. He only had a $ 50 bill and the salesman couldn't change it. So he went off to find a bank to change the bill to buy the pen to write on the paper to put on his car to tell the traffic police that his car had broken down. As he left the bank he saw a phone box. He decided to call a garage to send a truck to pull the car away, but the number was busy. When he got back to his car he found a parking ticket on the car. The story has, however, a happy ending. The driver wrote to the police station to explain what had happened. The police officer who read the letter decided not to punish him with the $ 20 parking fine. She said that even if the man' s story was not true, it was so clever he could be excused from being fined!

Opinions are divided on the question. 60% of the students are against the idea of entrance fees. They believe a public park should be free of charge. People need a place where they can rest and enjoy themselves. Changing entrance fees will no doubt keep some people away. What is more, it will become necessary to build gates and walls, which will do harm to the appearance of a city.

On the other hand, 40% think that fees should be charged because you need money to pay gardeners and other workers need to buy plants and young trees. They suggest, however, fees should be charged now.
