We walked in so quietly that the nurse at the desk didn't even lift her eyes from the book. Mum pointed at a big chair by the door and I knew she wanted me to sit down. While I watched, mouth open in surprise, Mum took off her hat and coat and gave them to me to hold. She walked quietly to the small room by the lift and took out a wet mop (拖把). She pushed the mop past the desk and as the nurse looked up, Mum nodded and said, "Very dirty floors. "

"Yes. I'm glad they've finally decided to clean them," the nurse answered. She looked at Mum strangely and said, "But aren't you working late?"

Mum just pushed harder, each swipe (拖) of the mop taking her farther and farther down the hall. I watched until she was out of sight and the nurse had turned back to writing in the big book.

After a long time Mum came back. Her eyes were shining. She quickly put the mop back and took my hand. As we turned to go out of the door, Mum nodded politely to the nurse and said, "Thank you."

Outside, Mum told me: "Dagmar is fine. No fever."

  "You saw her, Mum?"

Most animals have little connection with animals of a different kind, unless they hunt them for food. Sometimes, however, two kinds of animals come together in a partnership (伙伴关系) which is good for both of them. You may have noticed some birds sitting on the backs of sheep. This is not because they want a ride, but because they find easy food in the parasites (寄生虫) on sheep. The sheep allow the birds to do so because they remove the cause of discomfort. So although they can manage without each other, they do better together.

Sometimes an animal has a plant partner. The relationship develops until the two partners cannot manage without each other. This is so in the corals (珊瑚) of the sea. In their skins they have tiny plants which act as "dustmen", taking some of the waste products from the coral and giving in return oxygen which the animal needs to breathe. If the plants are killed, or are even prevented from receiving light .so that they cannot live normally, the corals will die.

61.Some birds like to sit on a sheep because ____________.

  A.they can eat its parasites

B.they enjoy traveling with the sheep

C.they depend on the sheep for existence

D.they find the position most comfortable

62.The underlined word "they" in the last sentence of the first paragraph refers to ______________.

A.birds and parasites B.birds and sheep

C.parasites and sheep D.sheep, birds and parasites

63.We learn from the text that corals depend on plants for _____________.

  A.comfort B.light C.food D.oxygen

64.What does the second paragraph mainly discuss?

A.Some animals and plants depend on each other for existence.

B.Some animals and plants develop their relationship easily.

C.Some plants depend on each other for food.

  D.Some animals live better together.

  C

The idea of fighting a noise by making more noise sounds strange, but that's exactly what motor engineers are doing in Germany and some other countries.

Car makers' research and development laboratories have already proved that mixing in more noise with the help of loudspeakers can reduce the unwanted noise.

Physicists have known about the technique for a long time. Sound is made up of pressure waves in the air. If two sound waves of the same frequency (频率) mix so that the highest point of one wave happens at the same time as the lowest point of the other wave, the result is no sound. Therefore, by producing a perfect copy of the noise and delaying it by half a wave cycle (周期), we can kill the unwanted noise. Using this technique many car makers are racing to develop noise-killing systems (系统) both inside and outside the cars.

Another good thing about the use of noise-killing systems is that it saves the need for a silencer; this not only reduces the weight of a car, but also makes the motor bum less fuel and work better.

Some engineers believe that the noise-killing system will be used in most cars within a few years. But the car makers haven' t decided if they will put it into production because it would add several hundred dollars to the cost of their cars.

65.Which of the following gives a general idea of how the noise-killing system works?

A.By producing pressure waves going in the opposite direction.

B.By mixing high frequency sound waves with low frequency sound waves.

C.By mixing new sound waves with the noise and sending them out together.

D.By making copies of the unwanted sound waves and letting them out a little later.

66.Besides its main use the noise-killing system can __________.

  A.make a car lighter

  B.make a car quieter

C.reduce the cost of a silencer

D.improve the performance of a silencer

67.The noise-killing system is not yet popular mainly because ___________.

A.it is still being tried out

  B.drivers still have their doubts

C.it increases the cost of car production

D.car makers are not sure if it is necessary

M: Hello. International Friends Club. Can I help you?

W: Oh, hello. I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I'd phone to find out a bit more.

M: Yes, certainly. Well, we' re a sort of social club for people from different countries. It's quite a new club — we have about 50 members at the moment but we're growing all the time.

W: That sounds interesting. I'm British actually, and I came to Washington about three months ago. I'm looking for ways to meet people. Er, what kinds of events do you organize?

M: Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings.

W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings?

M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening.

People can come and practise their languages — you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday — Spanish; Tuesday — Italian; Wednesday — German; and Friday — French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.

W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practise my French.

M: OK. Well, if you can just give me your name and address, I'll send you the form and some more information. If you join now you can have the first month free.

Now, you want to know about life in the past. Right? I can tell you. When I was a boy, things were different. I had to get up at six every morning. That was not very bad in summer, but in winter it was cold. And we didn't have any hot water in the house. We had to wash in cold water. We didn't have a bathroom. My dad had some chickens. I had to feed them every morning and then I had to walk to school with my little sister. It was two miles to school and two miles back in the evening. But it always seemed longer in the morning when we were going to school. There was a bus, but we didn' t have the money. And we had to go to bed at seven o'clock every night. We couldn't watch TV because there wasn't any. On Sun days we had to go to church three times — morning, afternoon and evening. And we couldn't play outside on Sundays. But it wasn't all bad. We had some good times. We could go out and our parents didn't have to worry about us. There weren't so many cars on the roads then, so the streets were safe to play in. And there were not many robbers and thieves in those days. We had to work hard and we weren't able to buy all those things in the shops today. Life was hard, but it was simple and people were happier. I don't think I'd like to be young today.

Tristan da Cunha, a 38-square-mile island, is the farthest inhabited island in the world, according to the Guinness Book of Records. It is 1,510 miles southwest of its nearest neighbor, St. Helena, and 1,950 miles west of Africa. Discovered by the Portuguese admiral(葡萄牙海军上将) of the same name in 1506, and settled in 1810, the island belongs to Great Britain and has a population of a few hundred. Coming in a close second—and often wrongly mentioned as the most distant land—is Easter Island, which lies 1,260 miles east of its nearest neighbor, Pitcairn Island, and 2,300 miles west of South America.

The mountainous 64-square-mile island was settled around the 5th century, supposedly by people who were lost at sea. They had no connection with the outside world for more than a thousand years, giving them plenty of time to build more than 1,000 huge stone figures, called moai, for which the island is most famous.

On Easter Sunday, 1722, however, settlers from Holland moved in and gave the island its name. Today, 2,000 people live on the Chilean territory (智利领土). They share one street, a small airport, and a few hours of television per day.

There is one foreign product the Japanese are buying faster than others, and its popularity bas caused an uneasy feeling among many Japanese.

  That product is foreign words.

Gairaigo—words that come from outside—have been part of the Japanese language for centuries. Mostly borrowed from English and Chinese, these terms are often changed into forms no longer understood by native speakers.

But in the last few years the trickle(涓涓细流) of foreign words has become a flood, and people fear the increasing use of foreign words is making it hard for the Japanese to understand each other and could lead to many people forgetting the good qualities of traditional (传统的)Japanese.

"The popularity of foreign words is part of the Japanese interest in anything new," says university lecturer and writer Takashi Saito. "By using a foreign word you can make a subject seem new, which makes it easier for the media(媒体) to pick up."

"Experts(专家) often study abroad and use English terms when they speak with people in their own fields. Those terms are then included in government white papers," said Muturo Kai, president of the National Language Research Institute. "Foreign words find their way easily into announcements made to the general public, when they should really be explained in Japanese."Against the flow of new words, many Japanese are turning back to the study of their own language. Saito' s Japanese to Be Read Aloud is one of many language books that are now flying off booksellers' shelves.

"We were expecting to sell the books to young people," said the writer, "but it turns out they are more popular with the older generation, who seem uneasy about the future of Japanese."

68.What advantages do foreign words have over traditional Japanese terms?

A.The ideas expressed in foreign words sound new.

B.Foreign words are best suited for announcements.

C.Foreign words make new subjects easier to understand.

D.The use of foreign words makes the media more popular.

At one time, computers were expected largely to remove the need for paper copies of documents(文件) because they could be stored electronically. But for all the texts that are written, stored and sent electronically, a lot of them are still ending up on paper.

It is difficult to measure the quantity of paper used as a result of use of Internet-connected computers, although just about anyone who works in an office can tell you that when email is introduced, the printers start working overtime. "I feel in my bones this revolution is causing more trees to be cut down," says Ted Smith of the Earth Village Organisation.

Perhaps the best sign of how computer and Internet use pushes up demand for paper comes from the high-tech industry itself, which sees printing as one of its most promising new markets. Several Internet companies have been set up to help small businesses print quality documents from a computer. Earlier this week Hewlett-Packard Co. announced a plan to develop new technologies that will enable people to print even more so they can get a hard copy of a business document, a medical record or just a one-line e-mail, even if they are nowhere near a computer. As the company sees it, the more use of the Internet the greater demand for printers.

Does all this mean environmental concerns(环境问题) have been forgotten? Some activists suggest people have been led to believe that a lot of dangers to the environment have gone away. "I guess people believe that the problem is taken care of, because of recycling(回收利用) ," said Kelly Quirke, director of the Rainforest Action Network in San Francisco. Yet Quirke is hopeful that high-tech may also prove helpful. He says printers that print on both sides are growing in popularity. The action group has also found acceptable paper made from materials other than wood, such as agricultural waste.

72.The growing demand for paper in recent years is largely due to ______________.

A.the rapid development of small businesses

B.the opening up of new markets

C.the printing of high quality copies

D.the increased use of the Internet

73.Environmentalists believe one possible way of dealing with the paper situation is________.

A.to encourage printing more quality documents

B.to develop new printers using recycled paper

C.to find new materials for making paper

  D.to plant more fast-growing trees

74.Hewlett-Packard Co. has decided to develop new technologies because __________.

A.people are concerned about the environment

B.printers in many offices are working overtime

C.small companies need more hard copies

D.they see a growing market for printers

75.What would be the best title for the text?

  A.Computers and Primers

  B.E-mail and the Business World

  C.Internet Revolution and Environment

  D.Modem Technology and New Markets

M: Hello. International Friends Club. Can I help you?

W: Oh, hello. I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I'd phone to find out a bit more.

M: Yes, certainly, well we're a sort of social club for people from different countries.

It's quite a new club—we have about 50 members at the moment, but we're growing all the time.

People can come and practise their languages—you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday—Spanish; Tuesday—Italian; Wednesday—German; and Friday—French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.

W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practise my French.

M: OK. Well, if you can just give me your name and address, I'll send you the form and some more information. If you join now you can have the first month free.
