Everyone has an ambition (志向) to travel. But those who cannot do so themselves might find it interesting to work in a travel agency(旅行社),arranging journeys for other people. Brain Lawley does this, working in a small travel agency in an industrial city. Most of his work is concerned with holidays, both at home and abroad. Every autumn, the agency sends out hundreds of booklets(小册子) full of attractive, colored photographs, describing the holidays that their customers will be able to have the next year. Soon, people begin to come into the office to book their holidays: perhaps a week’s skiing in Austria in January, perhaps a cruise(巡游) to the Caribbean in February, perhaps a seaside holiday in Spain in May, or a tour of Africa. Brain often has to advise people on what holidays will be suitable for them, and they always have a lot of questions. Last year, for example, a lady of eighty-two wanted to book for a mountaineering(爬山) holiday in the Alps, and Brain had great difficulty in persuading her that it would not be suitable. In the end, she decided to go for a Mediterranean cruise instead.
Arranging journeys for people who have to travel abroad on business is often very complicated, but Brain enjoys this work. For example, last spring Mr. Perry, a director of a chemical firm, went on a business trip, and Brain arranged it all for him. First Mr. Perry traveled to London by train, and stayed overnight in a hotel near the airport, because his plane left early the next morning. He flew to Frankfurt, in Germany, where he spent the morning discussing business. Then he went on by train to Zurich, where he stayed the night. After a meeting the next morning, he caught a plane for Tokyo, and spent three days there before going to America. He had business in Seattle, Chicago and New York, and stayed some time in each of those places. From New York, he flew back to London, and then got home by train. The next day he telephoned the agency to thank Brain for arranging everything so well for him.
56. Who would like to work in a travel agency?
A. People who live in an industrial city.
B. People who would like to travel but cannot.
C. Ambitious people.
D. The people who go on holidays abroad.
57. When do the customers come into the office to book their holidays?
A. Early in the morning. B. Every year.
C. In January. D. Shortly after receiving the booklet.
58. Those who cannot travel themselves might find it interesting to work in a travel agency_____.
A. arranging trips for other people
B. arranging trips for themselves.
C. booking trips for other people
D. describing the holidays for other people

Experiments with cats have been carried out at Harvard Medical School to find out what happens to individual brain cells during sleep. The cats were first made sleepy, and then a microelectrode (微电极) was attached to a particular cell in their heads.
Results show that the brain cells the scientists were looking at tend to behave quite differently during sleep from in a walking state because their response to visual stimuli (视觉刺激) is much reduced. However, the scientists were surprised to discover that brain cells, even when limited to the specific type they were studying, do not all behave in the same way.
These results are all related to “slow-wave” sleep, which is not the sleep in which dreams happen. Dreams produce a quite different effect on the visual-processing brain cells, more as if the dreamer were awake. The dreams of human beings have long been a source of interest to psychologists (心理学家), and scientists have studied some of their physical effects on eye movements. We know that human beings have dreams and, by comparing their physical effects, scientists have shown that animals probably have them, too.
59. What would be the best title of this passage?
A. Brain Cells B. A Study of Brain Cells during Sleep
C. A Study of Visual Processing D. Experiments with Cats
60. Why do the brain cells behave differently during sleep from in a waking state?
A. Because their response to visual stimuli is increased.
B. Because their response to visual stimuli declines greatly.
C. Because their response to visual stimuli is moderate.
D. Because their response to visual stimuli slightly decreases.
61. What is “slow-wave” sleep?
A. It is the sleep in which dreams happen.
B. It is the dreamer who falls into sleep slowly.
C. It is the sleep without dream.
D. It is the sleep which produces a different effect on the visual-processing brain cells.
62. How could scientists know that animals probably have dreams?
A. By experiments with cats.
B. By studying “slow-wave” sleep.
C. By studying the visual—processing brain cells.
D. By studying physical effects on eye movements.

When I asked my daughter which item she would keep: the phone, the car, the cooker, the computer, the TV, or her boyfriend, she said “the phone”. Personally, I could do without the phone entirely, which makes me unusual. Because the telephone is changing our lives more than any other piece of technology.
Point 1 The telephone creates the need to communicate , in the same way that more roads create more traffic. My daughter comes home from school at 4:00 pm and then spends an hour on the phone talking to the very people she has just been at school with all day. If the phone did not exist, would she have anything to talk about?
Point 2 The mobile phone means that we are never alone. “The mobile saved my life,” says Crystal Johnstone. She had an accident in her Volvo on the A45 between Otley and Skipton. Trapped inside, she managed to make the call that brought the ambulance(救护车) to her rescue.
Point 3 The mobile removes our secret. It allows Marketing Manager of Haba Deutsch, Carl Nicolaisen, to ring his sales staff all round the world at any time of the day to ask where they are, where they are going, and how their last meeting went.
Point 4 The telephone separates us. Antonella Bramante in Rome says, “ We worked in separate offices but I could see him through the window. It was easy to get his number. We were so near—but we didn’t meet for the first two weeks!”
Point 5 the telephone allows us to reach out beyond our own lives. Today we can talk to several complete strangers simultaneously(同时地) on chat line( at least my daughter does. I wouldn’t know what to talk about). We can talk across the world. We can even talk to astronauts (if you know any) while they’re space-walking. And, with the phone line hooked up to the computer, we can access the Internet, the biggest library on Earth.
60. How do you understand ‘point 1—The telephone creates the need to communicate,…’?
A. People don’t communicate without telephone.
B. People communicate because of the creating of the telephone.
C. People communicate more since telephone has been created.
D. People communicate more because of more traffic.
61. Which of the following best shows people’s attitude towards mobile phone?
A. Mobile phones help people deal with the emergency.
B. Mobile phones bring convenience as well as little secret to people.
C. Mobile phones are so important and should be encouraged.
D. Mobile phones are part of people’s life.
62. Which points do you think support the idea that phones improve people’s life?
a. Point 1 b. Point 2 c. Point 3 d. Point 4 e. Point 5
A. c, d B. a, e C. a, c D. b, e
63. It is possible to talk to several complete strangers simultaneously through______.
A. the TV screen B. a fax machine
C. the phone line hooked up to the computer
D. a microphone

The House Committee on Pollution(HCP)held a special meeting last night to discuss the Albanian case. A difficult situation occurred last week after the Albanians had refused to allow an international environmental organization to test cans of industrial waste that they were throwing into the Sea of Japan. It was thought that the cans may have contained nuclear waste, even though the Albanians have strongly refused to admit this.
Six crew members from the Greenpeace ship “Tiger 2”, which is still closely watching over the Albanian ship, secretly went abroad at night and took away one of the waste cans. The first test results of the waste in the can suggest nuclear waste rather than other industrial waste according to a report from the Japanese laboratory where the tests are being carried out. Further tests are necessary to make sure of the exact level of nuclear content.
The Greenpeace action has made the Albanians anger but the Foreign Secretary here has insisted that the Albanian ship leave the Sea of Japan and return home immediately. The Albanians, not surprisingly, have refused to do so, and demanded that “Tiger 2” be called off from watching them.
The international community is suggesting that the Albanian ship be properly searched and are saying that it is very important and necessary that no more cans are casted until the truth of this matter is made clear. Obviously, the Japanese government is particularly anxious to discover exactly what is being thrown so close to their northern islands, possibly polluting their fishing industry is to meet with the Albanian government tomorrow for the third time in a week.
