In America, where labour costs are so high, “do-it-yourself” is a way of life. Many people repair their own cars, build their own houses. Soon they may also be writing their own books. In Hollywood there is a company that publishes children’s books with the aid of computers. Although other companies also publish that way, this particular company is very unusual. It “personalizes” the books by having the computer make the reader the leading character in the story. Here is how they do it. Let us say your child is named Jenny. She lives on Oak Drive in St Louis, has a dog named Spot, a cat named Tabby, and three playmates whose names are Betsy, Sandy, and Jody. The computer uses information to fill out a story that has already been prepared and illustrated, The story is then printed with standard equipment as a hardcover book. A child who receives such a book might say, “This book is about me”; the company therefore calls itself the “Me-book Publishing Company”.
Children like the me-books very much because they like to see in print their own names and the names of their friends and their pets. But more important, “personalization” has been found to be an important tool in developing enthusiasm for reading. Me-books are thus helping a child to learn how to read, by appealing to that natural desire to see his own name in print.
56.Why do the children like the “me-books”?
A.Because the main characters are Jenny, her dog, her cat her three playmates.

A.The company will have to deal with a lot of information.
B.If you want to be well-known, you may turn to the company publishing the books.
C.The other companies will use the same method
D.Americans like “do it yourself”

Queen Victoria was monarch of Great Britain from 1837 until her death in 1901. This period is often called the Victorian Age.
Queen Victoria was a stern and serious woman. One reason she was so serious was that she had suffered a great loss. When she was twenty years old, she married a German prince named Albert. Victoria and Albert were deeply in love, and their marriage was extremely happy. In 1861, after they had been married for twenty-one years, Albert died, leaving Queen Victoria heartbroken. For the rest of her life, the lonely Victoria mourned his loss. It was customary in those days for a widow to dress in black for a short time after the death of her husband. But Queen Victoria dressed in black for forty years. And for forty years, as another sign of her grief, she wrote her letters white paper edged in black.
Even before Prince Albert died, Queen Victoria was known as a very serious woman. She had a strong sense of duty and worked very hard at all her tasks. In her diary she wrote, “ I love to be employed; I hate to be idle.” She never forgot that she was Britain’s queen and always acted with great dignity. Victoria had high ideals and moral standards that sometimes made her seem stuffy. She was also very sure of herself. What kind of monster is this? It speeds across the sea as fast as a jet airplane. On reaching land, it can suck all the water out of a harbor. Then the creature may grow more than 100 feet tall (30 1/2 meters) and flatten whole villages.
This sea monster is a tsunami (tsoo-NAH-mee). That’s Japanese for “great harbor wave.” Though sometimes called “tidal waves,” tsunamis have nothing to do with tides. Usually an undersea earthquake starts a tsunami’s waves rolling across the ocean. If you’ve ever tossed a pebble into a pond, then watched ripples spread out over the surface, you’ve seen this principle at work.
About four out of five tsunamis happen within the “Ring of Fire,” a zone of frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions roughly matching the borders of the Pacific Ocean. Along the ring’s edges, giant slabs of the earth’s crust, called tectonic plates, grind together. Sometimes the plates get stuck, and pressure builds. Then, the plates can suddenly come apart and slam into a new position. The jolt causes an earthquake. If an earthquake lifts or drops part of the ocean floor, the water above it starts moving too. This triggers a tsunami.
A tsunami can race across the ocean at 500 miles (805 kilometers) an hour. Oddly, in deep water its waves are only a few feet high. But when the waves approach shore, they increase in energy and height. Often before a tsunami hits, there is a giant vacuum effect, and water is sucked from harbors and beaches. People see the bare sea bottom littered with flopping fish and stranded boats. That is because waves are made up of crests, or high points, and troughs, or dips between crests. When a trough hits land first, the water level drops drastically. Usually another wave blasts ashore about 15 minutes later, then another and another—for two hours or more.
Tsunamis have killed more than 50,000 people in the past century. To save lives, scientists established the Pacific Tsunami Warning System, based in Hawaii, in the U.S.A. Its network of earthquake detectors and tide gauges detects quakes that may cause a tsunami.
We can’t tame the tsunami. But we can learn when it’s coming and escape the sea monster’s fury.
63.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.An introduction of tsunami
B.Relations between a tsunami and a quake
C.Human beings can’t tame the tsunami
D.he Pacific Tsunami Warning System was established in Hawaii.
64.Study the underlined sentence and you will find the word “crests” may means ______.

As we approach the 21st century, it is clearer than ever that science and technology are changing the way we live and work. The breakthroughs in bioengineering science are helping to reveal the mysteries of life, holding out new hope for lifesaving cures to some of our most dreaded diseases.
In 1997, the great news shocked the whole world that the British scientists created a lamb, named Dolly from a single cell. Miraculously, the cell had been taken from the udder of an adult sheep, which marks the first time an adult animal had been successfully cloned.
But it soon caused worldwide concern over its ethical, social, and scientific implications. Cloning is especially controversial because it raises the prospect of “making” humans genetically identical to an existing man or woman. Some people claim attempting to use these cloning techniques to actually clone a human being is untested and unsafe and morally unacceptable.
How to look upon this new technique? When it comes to a discovery like cloning, we must move with caution, care and deep concern about the impact of our actions. First, cloning should be greatly esteemed and great thanks should be given to its inventors. Meanwhile, great efforts should be made to place this technique under strict control. Especially we should adopt a document against human cloning since past experience tells us a new invention may cause troubles if it is misused.
66.What are changing the way we live and work? ________
A.Cloning. B.Life saving
C.Science and technology D.The mysteries of life
67.Who is Dolly? ______
A.A British scientist B.A single cell

C.morally unacceptable D.above of all
69.How should we look upon cloning? _______
A.Cloning is terrible B.Cloning must be moved with caution, care.
C.Cloning will cause troubles. D.Cloning is a disease
70.According to the passage, what should be given to cloning’s inventors? _____________
A.Strict control B.Great thanks C.Care D.Caution

Weighed down by study? Pushed to
the limit by the fast pace of life (生活的步伐)?
Frightened by the possible war? Well, you're not alone. Men and women in France
are seeking relief using the world's best medicine — laughter.
In the past year more than
25 laughter clubs have been set up across the country.
People of all ages go to release
their stress (释放压力) with an hour of group laughs.
"People telephoned me and said they
have forgotten what it is to laugh. They want to find a place where they can
escape all their problems for a while. So they come," said 40-year-old
Jocelyne Le Moan. She usually takes a class of around 60 people through a
series of laughter techniques.
Her pupils range from
teenagers to 70 year olds, but most are middle-aged white collars (白领) seeking 60 minutes of relaxation (放松) at the end of a busy day.
Le Moan takes them through
the "lion laugh" and the "laugh contest", where
participants approach (接近)
each other in different ways. And instead of talking, they break into fits of
laughter. At the end there are 15 minutes of "meditation" (沉思), when they lie on their backs and let the
laughs burst out of their mouths.
"I love it. It's an
experience that has changed my life. Through it I rediscovered the child's
laugh inside me," said Romain Jouffroy, 24. "US President George W.
Bush should give it a try. He has lost his laugh," she joked.
Like Jouffroy, many
laughter-club members find themselves changed into children again, and why not?
The average preschooler laughs up to 400 times a day. The average adult (成年人) only a sad seven to 15.
The physical benefits of
laughter are already well-recognized. Doctors say the act of laughing releases
good chemicals into the blood-stream, while the quick breathing that accompanies
(伴随) it helps massage (按摩) the digestive organs (消化器官) and strengthens the heart.
"A full hour is like
having your insides go jogging (慢跑)!
One finishes out of breath, but feels revitalized (产生新的活力). And on top of that, you've had a
laugh," said doctor Alexis d'Estaing.
And many participants in
Paris also emphasize the psychological (心理上的)
benefits. They believe that laughter is a way of making oneself feel more
confident.
"Maybe it is because we
are surrounded by so many troubles that we feel the need to keep
laughing," said Anne Maurigiano, a 29-year-old filmmaker.

听第10段材料,回答第17-20题
Shopping for clothes is not the same experience for a man as it is for a woman. A man goes shopping because he needs something. His purpose is settled and decided before his action. He knows what he wants, and his aim is to find it and buy it; the price is a secondary consideration. All men simply walk into a shop and ask the assistant for what they want. The job can be finished in less than five minutes.
Now how does a woman go about buying clothes? In almost every respect she does so in the opposite way. Her shopping is not often based on need. She has never fully made up her mind what she wants, and she is only “having a look round”. The most important thing in her mind is the thought of finding something that everyone thinks suits her. It is a long and hard job, but obviously one to be enjoyed. Most dress shops provide chairs for the waiting husbands.

Fire Causes
Fire, one of the most terrible killers in our modern society, is mainly caused by smokers, defective insulations and children playing with matches, as can be seen from the graph.
In 2003, thousands of fires happened in China. About 50% of them were caused by smokers who left cigarette-ends everywhere. 30% were caused by defective insulations and 20% by children playing with matches. No matter what type of the fire was, there was one thing in common: carelessness.
We should warn children of the dangers of playing with matches. Workers should know the importance of good insulation to people’s lives. Smoking should not be allowed in public places.
