I¡¯d meant to go to Miros that day. I¡¯d packed my bag and was ready. The motor-boat__36__ in on time. The sky was cloudy, but the wind wasn¡¯t too strong for the two-hour __37__. I stood at my window, staring at the boat. Then I lost __38__ of her, an old light-house partly blocked my view of the harbour. A dozen passengers were __39__ their way there. I was about to join them---when a man¡¯s face __40__ at the light-house window.
This was strange, because the light-house had been empty, unused and __41__ for thirty years. It was stranger still---because I¡¯d seen that __42__ before. I couldn¡¯t place it but it was, or had once been, familiar to me. I opened my window and __43__ across.
¡°I know we¡¯ve met before, but I can¡¯t remember where.¡±
I __44__ him to open his if he could and answer me. He did neither. The face behind the glass __45__ motionless£¨¾²Ö¹£©.Seeing him more clearly now, I knew he was not looking at me. He seemed to be looking upwards, __46__ the clouds. How well I¡¯d known that face, sometime, somewhere!
I __47__ again. ¡°We met years ago. Was it in Athens in the 1950s? I used to live in Plaka.¡±
He didn¡¯t reply nor give any __48__ that he¡¯d heard. I went back further, to __49__ I was in the navy.¡± Perhaps we met at sea during the war,¡± and that thought at once __50__ him to mind. Commander Leftis! He was Commander Leftis of course! How could I have forgotten? I¡¯d saved his life once. But surely he¡
The motor-boat __51__ her bell. I turned my eyes. The wind had risen, but she was pulling. __52__. Laughing, I called, ¡°Now I¡¯ve missed her, and it¡¯s your __53__, Commander!¡¯
As the boat drew away, the face at the window faded. __54__ minute it was there, looking up. I could see the whites of the eyes. The __55__ it was gone.
Well, I didn¡¯t rush to the light-house. I knew that Leftis was dead. He died at sea in 1963 or ¡¯64. But there¡¯s one other thing I ought to tell you: the motor-boat never reached Miros. It was lost in a storm, with all the passengers.

Are you a man or a mouse? When people ask this question they want to know¡¡¡¡¡¡ 36¡¡¡¡
You think you are a¡¡¡¡¡¡37¡¡ person or a coward(ų·ò). But you¡¯ll never really know the answer to that question¡¡¡¡¡¡38¡¡¡¡ you are tested in real life. Some people¡¡¡¡ 39¡¡ they are brave, but when they come face to face with real¡¡¡¡¡¡40¡¡¡¡ ,they act like cowards. Other people think of themselves as cowards, but when they meet danger, they act like¡¡¡¡¡¡41¡¡¡¡ .
Lenny Skutnic had always thought of himself as a¡¡¡¡¡¡ 42¡¡¡¡ person. He got worried before examinations. He worried¡¡about his job and health. When you are in a very¡¡¡¡¡¡49¡¡¡¡ situation and feel afraid, the body automatically(×Ô¶¯µØ) produce a chemical in the blood. This chemical is called adrenalin(ÉöÉÏÏÙËØ). ¡¡¡¡50¡¡¡¡ adrenalin in the blood system, you actually feel stronger and stronger and are¡¡¡¡¡¡51¡¡¡¡ to fight or run away. move at all. You are then paralysed(̱»¾) with fear. That is¡¡¡¡54¡¡¡¡ when you¡¯re very frightened, we sometimes say we¡¯re ¡°petrified¡±. This word comes from the Greek word ¡°petros¡±, which means ¡°stone¡±. We are¡¡¡¡¡¡ 55¡¡¡¡ frightened we have become like stone.

One spring afternoon five years ago, Jimmy Liao was crying in the hall of Taipei¡¯s Sherwood Hotel. Life seemed(36). Seeking more personally satisfying(41), he had just left a successful career as a commercial(ÉÌÒµµÄ) artist when it seemed that fate played a cruel(42) on him. It was at this time that he developed cancer and was (43) to work. But that moment in the hotel was a turning point for Jimmy. According to Jimmy, you are what you choose to be. You can (46) or you can work to be a happier person. Jimmy realized that, while the world(47) seems unfair, your choice can change your life.
This idea can be(48) in Jimmy¡¯s books, where his characters show the powerlessness they feel(49) making their choices. The message that accompanies Jimmy¡¯s drawings, however, is(50): Though the world may make us feel small, we must be(51). Despite his new(53) and wealth, Jimmy prefers working(54) at home with his wife and daughter. He spends his mornings drawing. To Jimmy, living a life as he chooses means much more than money and fame could(55).

¡¡¡¡It was a haft-mile walk from our small house to the beach road, where the 36 would be waiting for us. But that morning Janet was much worse. She couldn't make 37 walk. And I couldn't carry her. The path to the beach was steep and narrow and ¡¡38¡¡ at the water's edge.
I was a stranger far from home. I didn't know ¡¡39¡¡ to turn for help. But I needed it badly. ! hurried down to the beach and I found help. Four fishermen were about to go out for their morning ¡¡40¡¡. I told them about my sick little sister. Could they help me get her down the 41 ? I hardly got the words out of my mouth ¡¡42¡¡ they dragged their boat back onto the sand. They climbed the hill with me. One looked at Janet and they ¡¡43¡¡ their heads. They talked softly to one another." ¡¡44¡¡ sick to sit in a chair," one said.
"Better carry her ¡¡45¡¡ in bed," said another.
An iron cot(¶ùͯ´²) ¡¡46¡¡ along the cliff! I was frightened. How could they do it? 47 the men told me not to worry. "Truly easy, truly ¡¡48 ," they said.
They tied a rope to each leg of the cot. Each of them threw a rope ¡¡49¡¡ his shoulder and held the end in one hand. I understood what they meant to do. ¡¡50¡¡ they carried the cot down the path, they would use the ropes to keep the cot ¡¡51¡¡ . But what if one of the men slipped and lost his balance? What would happen to him ¡ª to the others ¡ª to ¡¡52 ? The men just smiled at my alarm. "That ¡¡53¡¡ will make us even more careful." They said.
The men went down the path. Every ¡¡54¡¡ was a careful one. Always file cot was level, with never a bump. When they reached the beach read, they quietly lifted Janet into the taxi.¡¡ 55 , they stretched her out on the back seat.
We made the rooming train for Tokyo. And there an ambulance was waiting to take Janet to the hospital. The doctor told me that I had got my little girl there just in time. Janet would be all fight soon.

¡¡¡¡I remember vividly that first English class in the last term of high school. We boys(there were no girls in the school) were ¡¡36¡¡ expectantly(ÆÚÅÎ) for the new teacher to appear.
¡¡¡¡Before long, through the door came a tall ordinary-looking man ¡¡37¡¡ about 40. He said shyly, "Good afternoon, gentlemen."
His ¡¡38¡¡ had a surprising tone of respect, almost ¡¡ 39¡¡ he were addressing the Supreme Court (×î¸ß·¨Ôº) ¡¡40¡¡ a group of youngsters. He wrote his ¡¡41¡¡ on the blackboard -- Wilmer T. Stone, ¡¡42¡¡ sat on the front of his desk. "Gentlemen," he began, "we are now this term -- your last ¨C to continue your study of ¡¡ 43 ¡¡. I know we shall enjoy learning with -- and¡¡ 44 one another. We are going to learn ¡¡45¡¡ about journalism and how to get out your weekly school paper. ¡¡46 , we are going to try to feel the ¡¡47¡¡ of good literature, maybe some of us will really get ¡¡48 in reading and writing. A man who reads lives 49 . A man who ¡¡50¡¡, walks the earth with a blindfold(ÃÉÑÛ²¼,ÑÛÕÖ). If I had to put all my ¡¡51 ¡¡into a single word, it would be: browse (¹ã·ºä¯ÀÀ)."
¡¡¡¡Mr Stone went on like that, ¡¡52¡¡ in a friendly and understanding tone. The ¡¡53¡¡ of the class came ¡¡54¡¡ soon. And we boys had to leave the classroom ¡¡55¡¡ an unexpected feeling of excitement.

¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ H
About 1,000 students were having a final exam in a huge lecture hall. Obviously the teacher wasn¡¯t very well liked, who kept shouting out how much time was left. During the exam he was so
¡¡36 going around the room making sure that nobody ¡¡37¡¡. He asked the students to pile the
¡¡38 tests on the huge desk. This made for quite a mess(»ìÂÒ).
¡¡¡¡Anyway, everyone needed a fairly good ¡¡39¡¡. Many students did poorly when rushed.¡¡40
of the students thought that he must get a good grade, so he went on when the professor said ¡° 41
down and check up your exam sheets¡±.
Five ¡¡42¡¡ turned into ten, ten into twenty, twenty into forty ¡ almost an hour ¡¡43¡¡ the test was over, our friend finally put down his pencil, ¡¡44¡¡ up his work, and headed to the front to present his final. The whole time, the professor sat there, ¡¡45¡¡ waiting for the student to complete.
¡°What do you think you are doing?¡± It was clear that the professor had ¡¡46¡¡ only to give the student a ¡¡47¡¡ time.
¡°Turning in my exam,¡± replied the student confidently.
¡°I¡¯m afraid I have some bad ¡¡48¡¡ for you,¡± the professor gloated(ÐÒÔÖÀÖ»ö), ¡°Your¡¡49
is an hour late. You¡¯re FAILED it. And I¡¯ll see you next term when you ¡¡50¡¡ my course.¡±
The student smiled slyly(½ÆÕ©µØ) ¡¡51¡¡ asked the professor, ¡°Do you know who I am?¡± ¡°No,¡± cried out the professor ¡¡52¡¡.
The student ¡¡53¡¡ the professor right in the eyes and said slowly, ¡°I didn¡¯t think so,¡± so he lifted up one of the ¡¡54¡¡ half way, put his test neatly into the center of the pile, let the pile fall
¡¡55 his test in the middle, turned around, and walked out of the huge lecture hall.
