Good evening. Tonight’s broadcast brings together music from different corners of the world. The records we have chosen for you are from classical Western music, Indian music, pop and a Negro spiritual(黑人赞歌). In this broadcast we shall study the language of music. We shall try to find out how music says what people feel. You will hear a Beethoven piano piece, a composition for the sitar(一种乐器), and songs sung by a pop group and some black Americans. It will be natural if you like one more than the others. I shall be trying to explain why they are all good music.

The feeling in each of these 4 musical compositions is sadness. You can find sadness in words, in paintings, and in music. The word “music” comes from the Greek word “muse”. The muses were goddesses of the arts. Music is only one of the arts. It is like the spoken language, but uses sounds differently. In the spiritual and the pop song you will hear voices. The words are part of the musical composition. In the other pieces you will hear only the piano or the sitar. I shall be saying a few words after each record. Music is now heard everywhere, in shops and buses and at home. We shall be trying to find out more about how music works. It is worth making the effort. Only then can we say why one piece of music is good and another bad.

59.The records which will be played ________.

A.concern a few kinds of music B.express all the people’s feelings

C.are from different parts of the world D.are a new kind of music

A.In a Beethoven piano piece you can not hear voices.

B.Music is the spoken language with different sounds.

C.It is natural for people to like one kind of music more than the others.

D.In some musical compositions you can hear words.

62.According to the announcer, we can tell why one piece of music is better than another ______.

A.after we study the language of music

B.after these musical compositions are explained

C.after we learn more about how music works

D.only when we know how to play music

Every pet owner loves his pets. There is no argument here.

But when we asked our readers whether they would clone(克隆) their beloved animals, the responses were divided almost down the middle. Of the 228 readers who answered our question, 108 would clone, 111 would not and nine weighed each side without offering an opinion.

Clearly, from readers’ response, this is an issue that reaches deeply into both the joy and final sadness of owning a pet. It speaks, as well, to people’s widely differing expectations over the developing scientific action.

Most of the respondents who favored the idea strongly believed it would produce at least a close copy of the original(原物); many felt the process would actually return an exact copy. Those on the other side, however, held little hope a clone could ever truly recreate(再造) a pet; many simply didn’t wish to put themselves into the argument over the natural law of life and death.

Both sides expressed equal outpouring of love for their animals. More than a few respondents owned “the best dog [or cat] in the world.” (The majority of respondents proved themselves dog owners.) They wrote a lot of their pets as their “best friend,” “a member of the family,” “the light of my life.” They told moving stories of pets’ bravery, cleverness and selfless devotion.

Little wonder the probability of loss is so disturbing-and the probability of cloning so interesting. “People become so fond of their animals, and the loss can be just as hard to bear as when a friend or family member dies,” says Gary Kowalski, an author of Goodbye, Friend. “For me, cloning feels like an attempt to turn death away… It’s understandable. Death is always painful. It’s difficult to deal with. It’s hard to accept.”

But would cloning ease the blow? At last, this question seemed to be at the heart of the issue.

63.So far as the cloning of pets is concerned, a recent study shows that, of all pet owners, ______.

A.a lot more of them are for it

B.a lot more of them are against it

C.very few of them are willing to tell their opinions

D.about half of them are for it and the other half against it

64.While talking about the responses from the readers, the expression “final sadness of owning a pet” refers to __________.

    A.the death of one’s pet

B.the high cost of owning a pet

C.the troubles of keeping a pet

D.the dangers involved in the cloning of a pet

65.In spite of the differences on the issue of cloning, it seems that ________.

A.all pet owners try to put themselves into the argument of the issue

B.all pet owners love their pets very much

C.people who support cloning love their pets more

D.people who are against cloning hate animals very much

66.From what Gary Kowalski says, we can know that he _______.

A.has never thought about the issue of cloning

B.is going to write another book on pets

C.understands the idea of cloning pets

D.is all against the cloning of pets

67.What is the key question at the heart of the issue of cloning pets?

A.Can cloning ease the pain one suffers when a pet dies?

B.Can pet owners afford the cost of cloning?

C.Does cloning bread a basic law of nature?

D.How truly does cloning produce an exact copy of one’s pet?

D

The question sat unanswered in the clear Montana air. Kathleen Englund always wanted to know, who was her biological mother?

“I have always wanted to find her. It’s always been a dream in my life,” says Englund, 24, an athletic department administrator at the University of Montana. “I wanted to know what she looked like, why she did it, all the questions adopted(领养) kids have.”

For three years Englund searched the court records in Missoula, finding her original birth certificate(证), finding the name of her mother, Gail Patterson, but no trace of how to find her mother. She sent $ 100 to a woman in Great Falls who promised to track her down, but got no response and no repayment.

Then on May 14, 1997, four days after Mother’s Day, she logged onto the Internet(上网). She found a mysterious woman in Helena who wouldn’t give her name, but offered to look up records. Two hours later, the woman called back.

She had found Gail Patterson. Patterson had married, taken her husband’s last name, been separated and now lived in Fort Benton.

“I can’t even remember how I was feeling. Excited? Nervous? I mailed her a letter that day to say I wanted to meet her,” Englund says. “Two weeks later, I got a phone call. It was her.”

They met in June. Englund opened the door, felt like she was looking into a mirror and met her biological mother for the first time.

Since then, the two have seen each other a couple of times. They have struck up a friendship, and Englund has answered the troublesome question.

In the second half of each year, many powerful storms are born in the Atlantic and Caribbean seas. Of these, only about half a dozen cause the strong, circling winds of 75 miles per hour or more that are named hurricanes, and several usually make their way to the coast. There they cause millions of dollars of damage, and bring death to large numbers of people.

The great storms that hit the coast start as harmless circling disturbances(大气扰动) hundreds- even thousands- of miles out at sea. As they travel aimlessly over water warmed by the summer sun, they are carried westward by the trade winds. When conditions are just right, warm, wet air flows in at the bottom of such a disturbance, moves upward through it and comes out at the top. In this course, the wetness in this warm air produces rains, and with it the heat is changed into energy in the form of strong winds. As the heat increases, the young hurricane begins to swirl(旋转) in a counter – clockwise(逆时针) motion.

The average life of a hurricane is only about nine days but it contains almost more power than we can imagine. The hidden energy of the heat given off by a hurricane’s rainfall in a single day would satisfy the entire electrical needs of the US for more than six months. Water, not wind, is the main source of death and destruction(破坏) in a hurricane. A typical(典型) hurricane bring 6-to 12- inch downpour resulting in sudden floods. Worst of all is she powerful movement of the sea – the mountains of water moving toward the low- pressure hurricane center. The water level rises as much as 15 feet above normal as it moves toward shore.

72.What is the worst thing about a hurricane?

A.The harmful effects of water. B.The heat it gives off.

C.It lasts about nine days on average. D.It’s very strong wind.

73.The counter- clockwise swirling of the hurricane is brought about by _________.

A.the low-pressure area in the center of the storm

    B.the increasing heat

    C.the trade winds

D.the force of waves of water

74.The underlined word “downpour” probably means __________.

A.dangerous waves B.the energy produced by the hurricane

C.heavy rainfall D.the progress of water to the hurricane center

75.What’s the main idea of the text?

A.The great heat is caused by counter-clockwise swirling.

B.The process of changing storms into hurricanes.

C.Circling disturbances can lead to destructive hurricanes.

D.The cause of a hurricane and its destruction.

A good teacher is many things to many people. In 76

my own experience, I think the teacher I respect the most 77

are those demanded the most discipline(纪律) from 78

their students. I think of one teacher particular I had in 79

the high school. She was such a good teacher as she was 80

popular with us. I remember sign over her classroom 81

door. It was a simple sign that was said: “laboratory 82

——in that room the first five letters are emphasized(强调), 83

not the last seven.” For other words, I guess labor for her was 84

英语参考答案及录音内容

第一节

(Text 1)

M: I nearly missed it this morning. I got to the corner just in time.

W: You are lucky. These drivers always leave on time since it takes so long to cross the city.

(Text 2)

M: It’s been half an hour since we left that restaurant and I still haven’t seen the exit number we are

  looking for.

W: How about that gas station? Isn’t that the one right before the exit?

M: That’s right. We’ll turn soon.

(Text 3)

W: At first I thought this carpet was yellow but now it looks green to me.

M:You were right the first time. It’s this blue light in the store that makes everything look different.

(Text 4)

M: Hello, Mary, this is Paul Green at the bank. Is Tom there?

W: Not yet Paul. I don’t think you could reach him at the office now, either. He phoned me there 5

minutes ago to say he was stopping for a haircut on his way home.

(Text 5)

W: Where is the post office?

M: Walk straight ahead for 3 blocks and then turn right at the third Avenue. It’s on the fifth street.

  You can find it easily.

第二节

(Text 6)

M: Do you mind if we stop by the post office? I have to mail these letters and I don’t have any

  stamps.

W: Oh, I have some. We don’t need to go all the way to the post office.

M: That would save time. Can you let me have two airmail stamps and one regular one?

W: Here you are. Are you sure that’s enough?

M: Yes, that’s fine. Now all we have to do is find a mailbox.

(Text 7)

W: Don’t forget. We’re invited out to dinner tonight.

M: Oh, I almost forgot. Thanks for reminding me. What time?

W: Seven-thirty. We should leave the house by six-thirty. You know how bad the traffic is that

  time of night.

M: Uh-huh. It’s informal, isn’t it?

W: Yeah. You can wear your new sports jacket.

M: Okay. I’ll try to get home a little early.

W: Good. Bye-bye.

(Text 8)

M: Was that the telephone ringing?

W: I didn’t hear anything.

M: I thought I heard it ring two or three times.

W: Sometimes when the windows are open, you can hear the neighbor’s phone.

M: Well, I’m expecting an important phone call, and I don’t want to miss it.

W: Is it anything I should know about?

M: Not really. It has something to do with work and doesn’t really affect us here at home.

W: Well, why don’t you go ahead and do what you want to do outside. I’ll call you if the phone

  rings for you.

M: Thanks. I think I will. I’ve been waiting so long now I’m getting nervous. I need to relax

  outdoors.

(Text 9)

W: Why, Tom! What a nice surprise! What brings you out here?

M: Oh, I had some time on my hands and thought I’d take a little drive in the country. And I

wanted you to meet my friend, Richard.

W: How do you do? It’s a pleasure to meet you.

M: It’s a pleasure to meet you, too.

W: Do come in. Both of you. Can you stay for lunch?

M: I’m afraid not. We want to see some other people this morning, so we can only stay for a few

  minutes.

W: But you do have time for coffee, don’t you?

M: That would be nice.

W: Please sit down while I go fix the coffee. I won’t be a minute.

(Text 10)

Mr. White was the owner of a small newspaper. He always tried to bring his readers the latest

news.

One day, he received an exciting telephone call from someone. He told Mr. White that there was a sudden flood somewhere in the north and several people had disappeared. Mr. White quickly wrote it all down. That evening the story was printed in his newspaper. Mr. White was glad to see that no other paper had known the news.

But the next day, another person telephoned him and told him he was tricked. So in the next day’s paper he wrote, “We were the first and only newspaper to report yesterday that the village in the northern mountain was caught in a flood. Today, we are proud to tell you that we are again the first newspaper to bring our readers the news yesterday’s story was not true.”

Great changes have taken place in our country in recent years. More and more people in our country are getting well-off and their living standards have been remarkably raised. What people were dreaming of has largely been turned into realities. Quite a number of families are proud of cars of their own. Houses which used to be small and old are replaced by large, modern, and comfortable ones. Besides, people nowadays no longer limit themselves to their homes all the year round. They make trips at home, and some even go abroad. However, all these were unthinkable twenty years ago.

It is believed that the people of our country will have a better and happ
