"Put in another three quarters" said the driver, "or get off the bus."

One privilege of old age is being stubborn (固执). John said, "Give me back my quarters, and I'll get off."

"I can't--it's in the box. If you don't get off, I'll call the police," said he, which he did. Two police cars pulled up.

"I'm the criminal," said John Russell. Then he and the driver told their stories.

"That's what you called me for?" one policeman asked the driver. Another policeman said to John, "I'll give you three quarters."

John shook his head, "Why should you give me the quarters? He has to give me my quarters."

"Where are you going?" asked the policeman.

"Downtown to have lunch with friends," John said.

"Come on," the policeman said. "We'll get you your card," So they took him down to the CTA office. But the people there wouldn't give him a CTA card--he needed a picture.

"What about his quarters?" one policeman asked. The officials discussed, and the decision was made to give John's quarters back.

When John got downstairs, the policemen asked where he was going.

"To see my friends," John said.

"How are you going to get there?"

"On the bus. And all I'm going to pay is 75 cents."

Nature has supplied every animal except man with some covering for his body such as fur, feathers, hair, and shells as a thick hide. But man has nothing but a thin skin.

If someone were to ask you, "Why did human beings start to cover their bodies with clothes? " most would answer, "To keep themselves warm, of course. "

It is only when we begin to think about it a little that we realize that clothes are worn for a great many reasons that have nothing to do with our need for warmth at all.

For example, we wear clothes to some degree in order to decorate ourselves--to make ourselves, if possible, look more dignified(尊严) or nicer.

Clothes of a special kind are often worn to show that the weather has authority or power. The individual wearing them is treated with respect because he occupies a certain office. The judge on the bench, for example, might look a very ordinary and unimpressive figure without his wig and gown. Clothes are an important part of ceremony, whether it is connected with belief, the law, parliament, and royalty, the fighting forces or the state. How very different the Queen's Coronation ceremony (加冕仪式) would have looked without the robes, coronets and the cloth of gold.

Sometimes, even in some modern countries people wear some article of clothing, or some jewel, because they believe that it will bring them luck or protect them against evil or illness, or because it is connected with their beliefs.

None of these reasons for wearing clothes——to decorate ourselves, to show our position in the world, for ceremonial purpose, for "luck", to give ourselves dignity and authority--have anything to do with our need for warmth.

69. From the passage we know that wearing clothes is man's basic necessity to _______.

  A. protect skin B. show beauty C. keep warm D. bring luck

70. The judge wearing special clothes on the bench

  A. looks nicer B. looks different C. shows wealth D. shows power

71. Even in modern countries, sometimes people wear certain clothes because _______.

  A. they believe that they will get protect from bad luck and illness

  B. it has something to do with their wealth

  C. they want to show their power

  D. they enjoy wearing such kind of clothes

72. The author's purpose in writing this article is to tell us that clothes are worn ________.

  A. for ceremonial occasions        B. for many other reasons besides warmth

  C. to keep people impressive and nicer D. to show people's authority or power

E

Nobody disagrees that students should learn something about how computers work, for people should have some basic idea of how the things that they are used to do what they do. But that is not what is meant by computer literacy (文化素养). For computer literacy is not a form of reading or writing ability; it is a working skill that should not be taught as a literal art.

Learning how to use a computer and learning how to program (编程序) one are two very different activities. It is possible that the qualified (有资格的,胜任的) citizens of tomorrow should free themselves from their fear of computers. But this is quite different from saying that all should know how to program one. Leave that to people who have chosen programming as a special job, though programming can be lots of fun, and our society needs some people who are experts at it; the same is true of car repairs and violin-making.

Learning how to use a computer is not that difficult, and it gets easier all the time as programs become more "user-friendly". Let us suppose that in the future everyone is going to have to know how to use a computer in order to be a "qualified citizen". What does the phrase "learning to use a computer" mean? It sounds like "learning to drive a car", that is, it sounds as if there is some set of skills that , once mastered, enable one to use a computer.

In fact, "learning to use a computer" is much more like "learning to play a game", but learning the rules of one game may not help you play a second game, whose rules may not be the same. There is no such a thing as teaching someone how to use a computer. One can only teach people to use this or that program and generally that is easily done.

73. In the second paragraph "violin-making" is mentioned to show that _______.

  A. programming a computer is as interesting as making a violin

  B. our society needs experts in different fields

  C. violin-making requires as much skill as computer programming

  D. people who can use a computer don't necessarily have to know computer programming

74. Learning to use a computer is getting easier all the time because _____.

  A. programs are becoming more and more simple

  B. programs are designed to be more and more convenient to users

  C. programming is becoming easier and easier

  D. programs are getting cheaper and cheaper

75. The writer's purpose in writing this passage is _______.

  A. to stress the effect of the computer on society

  B. to explain the concept(概念) of computer literacy

  C. to point out the similarities between programming and violin-making

  D. to show the requirements for being qualified citizens of tomorrow

Mr. Smith owned his own business and worked very hard.  His wife was afraid that he would get sick if he continued like that, so she often tried to persuade him to have a vacation, but she was afraid that he might not be able to enjoy his vacation quietly, so before they left, Mrs. Smith went to see her husband's secretary. She said to her, "My husband needs a vacation very much, so whatever happens, please don't bother him with telegrams and letters about business problems while we're away. Just wait till we come back."

After Mr. and Mrs. Smith had been away for about a week, Mr. Smith received a letter from his secretary who said "Something terrible happened to your business, but I'm not going to bother you with it while you're enjoying your vacation."

"It's a prize, mother," he explained.

"A prize? What for, dear?"

"For natural history teacher asked me how many legs an ostrich has and I said three."

Once, when Nasreddin was a boy, his mother went out for picnic. Before she left, she said to him, "Nasreddin, while I'm away, stay near the door and watch it all the time!" She said this because there were a lot of thieves in their town.

Nasreddin sat down beside the door. After an hour, one of his uncles came. He asked Nasreddin: Where's your mother?" "At a picnic." Nasreddin answered. "Well," said his uncle, "We're going to visit your house this evening. Go and tell your mother."

His uncle then went way, and Nasreddin began to think. "Mother said watch the door all the time!" and uncle said, "Go and tell your mother."

He thought and thought, then, at last, he pulled the door down, put it on his back, and went to his mother with it.
