Controlled fires sometimes burn out of control. The fire in this story was in Northern California last July. A Bureau of Land Management crew started it. They wanted to burn brush(灌木), which might burn. The winds blew the fire out of control. About 2,000 acres and 23 homes burned.

People wondered why they did a burn in these kinds of conditions. The area had a week of over a hundred degree weather, and it had been windy for a whole week. The government said the Bureau of Land Management was at fault. It failed to look at the weather. Moreover, it didn’t have a back-up plan to protect homes inside the controlled burn area. The BLM (Bureau of Land Management) quickly admitted it was their fault and started paying the owners of the homes.

This should have been a lesson to the people who set the fires. It is very risky. A sudden change in the wind can make the fire burn out of control.

However, fire managers say many years of keeping fire from burning on public lands means they are ready to burn. Fire scientists think these systems are going to burns anyway. In the past these forests burned every four, five, seven, eight years.

Two months ago the Los Angeles County Fire Department started using its new brush crusher(灌木碾压机). It is a 10-ton roller that stamps(压)down brush. This makes controlled burns easier. But fire scientists say taking out brush does not work as well as burning. They say controlled burns are needed to avoid big fires in the areas near cities. Care needs to be increased when burning near cities. While controlled fires can be risky, they’re not as risky as doing nothing.

56. People wondered why BLM did a burn because ______.

A .they couldn't understand why brush had to be burnt

  B. BLM people knew little about controlled fires

  C. it was easy to see that fires would break out easily in such weather conditions

  D. BLM people had never done a burn before

57. What do fire scientists think about the controlled fires?

   A. Controlled fires can be replaced by taking out brush.

   B. Controlled fires are not as dangerous as doing nothing.

   C. It is important to keep any fire from burning on public lands.

   D. It is not dangerous even if controlled fires bum out of control.

58. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the text?

   A. People from BLM refused to admit that the fire was their fault.

   B. If the BLM had made a plan against any possible danger, there wouldn't have been so many homes burnt.

   C. The main reason to bum brushes is that they grow too quickly.

   D. A new machine began to be used to control the fire when burning brushes.

59. It can be concluded that the text is most probably part of a ______.

   A. research paper on controlled fire

   B. government document which record all the big fires

   C. news report

   D. short story about a fire

Point and click, point and click. This is the hour after I finish my homework.

As I write that last chemistry answer, my mind wanders to what awaits me in the world of the   Web. Soon I will be talking to friends through immediate messages, reading new mail in my inbox and checking out teen sites for the autumn fashion. Many teens spend hours on-line. It's a fun new way of communication and exploration.

As I point and click away, I feel like a detective.

If I have a question on relationships or other problems, I look to the millions of teens on the Web for advice. Many sites offer articles written by teens, and reading message boards is also very helpful when looking for advice. For homework, the on-line encyclopedias(百科全书) never stop to provide just the information I am looking for.

Another important part of my life on-line is communication. Although e-mail and immediate messages will never replace traditional mail and the telephone, I do depend heavily on the Web for immediate communication.

I love that because I can go on-line and talk to my friend in Ireland just as easily as I can talk to my friends in the next town. An e-mail to my grandmother tells her how much I care in a matter of seconds, and private chat rooms even provide a great discussion for late-night study groups.

Communication is a basic part of everybody's life, and the Web is a tool to make communication easier.

With a click of my mouse, the answers to my questions are just seconds away. The Web helps me find great summer job information, the hottest new movie and even the most popular places to hang out in my area.

Who would ever have thought that the world would be at our fingertips?

The services the Internet provides are endless. It can meet the needs of a student in Alaska just the same as it meets the needs of a businessman in Japan.

I love the Internet, and I guess I am just a girl in a point and click world.

Believe it or not, optical illusion (错觉) can cut highway crashes. Japan is a case in point. It has reduced automobile crashes on some roads by nearly 75 percent using a simple optical illusion. Bent stripes, called chevrons (人字形) painted on the roads make drivers think that they are   driving faster than they really are,and thus drivers slow down. Now the American Association Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington D.C.is planning to repeat Japan's success. Starting next year, the foundation will paint chevrons and other patterns of stripes on selected roads around the country to test how well the patterns reduce highway crashes. Excessive speed plays a major role in as much as one fifth of all deadly traffic accidents, according to the foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the foundation will conduct its tests in areas where speed - related hazards are the greatest - curves, exit slopes, traffic circles, and bridges. Some studies suggest that straight, horizontal bars(平行横线) painted across roads can cut the average speed of drivers in half at first. However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drivers become used to seeing the painted bar. Chevrons, scientists say,not only give drivers the impression that they are driving faster than they really are but also make a lane appear to be narrower. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway speed and the number of traffic accidents.
64. The passage mainly discusses       .

A. a new way of highway speed control
  B. a new pattern for painting highways
  C. a new approach to training drivers
  D. a new type of optical illusion
65. The advantage of chevrons over straight, horizontal bars is that the former .
  A. can keep drivers awake
  B. can cut road accidents in half
  C. will have a longer effect on drivers
  D. will look more attractive
66. The American Association Foundation for Traffic Safety plans to     .
  A. try out the Japanese method in certain areas
  B. change the road signs across the country
  C. replace straight, horizontal bars with chevrons
  D. repeat the Japanese road patterns
67. What does the author say about straight, horizontal bars painted across roads?
  A. They are falling out of use in the United States.
  B. They tend to be ignored by drivers in a short period of time.

C. They are applicable only on broad roads.

  D. They cannot be applied successfully to traffic circles.

D

Testing has replaced teaching in most public schools. Pretests, drills, tests, and retests fill my own children’ s school week. They know that the best way to read a textbook is to look at the questions at the end of the chapter and then skim the text for the answers. I believe that. my daughter Eriea, who gets excellent marks, has never read a chapter of any of her school textbooks all the way through. And teachers are often heard to state proudly and openly that they teach to the mandated state test.

Teaching to the test is a curious phenomenon. Instead of deciding what skills students ought to learn, helping students learn them, and then using some sensible methods of assessment (评价) to discover whether students have mastered the skills, teachers are encouraged to reverse the process. First one looks at a test, which is intended for money. Then one chooses the skills needed not to master reading, but to do well in the test. Finally, the test skills are taught.

The ability to read or write or calculate might imply the ability to do reasonably well on standardized tests. However, neither reading nor writing develops simply through being taught to take tests. We must be careful to avoid mistaking preparation for a test of a skill with the acquisition(习得) of that skill. Too many discussions of basic skill make this misunderstanding because people are only interested in the test rather than concerned with the nature and quality of what is taught.

Recently, many schools have faced what could be called the crisis of comprehension or, in simple terms, the phenomenon of students with grammar skills still being unable to understand what they read. These students are quite good at test taking and filling in workbooks. However, they have little or no experience reading or thinking, and talking about what they read. They know the details but can’ t see or understand the whole. They are taught to be so concerned with grade that they have no time or ease of mind to think about meaning, and reread things if necessary.

68. The author gives an account of Erica’s performance in her study in order to show .

A. her cleverness in test- taking

  B. the incompetence of teachers

  C. there is something wrong with the current practice in teaching

  D. the best way to read textbooks

69. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

  A. The phenomenon of teaching to the test has aroused curiosity in many educators.

  B. Skills in general are not only useless but often mislead students.

  C. Ability to read and write is one thing, and ability to do well on standardized tests is quite another.

  D. Preparation for test of a skill does not necessarily mean the acquisition of that skill.

70. The author insists that

  A. mandated state tests be replaced by some more sensible methods of assessment

  B. teachers pay more attention to the nature and quality of what is taught

  C. students not be concerned with grades but do more reading and thinking

  D. main changes be brought about in the general teaching

71. By "crisis of comprehension" the author means many students

  A. are too much concerned with grades

  B. fail to understand the real goal of education

  C. lack proper practice in grammar drills

D. are unable to understand what they read, though they do reasonably well on standardized tests

LONDON: What could possibly be wrong with planting trees? The benefits are obvious: they firm the soil, soak up extra water and take carbon dioxide(二氧化碳) out of the atmosphere.

However, it now turns out that planting trees could add to global warming.

Tree roots do a great job of keeping soil firm on the ground and out of the wind's power. The problem is that some of those dust clouds play an important part in soaking up carbon dioxide

Huge dust storms blow out over the oceans from dry parts of North Africa and central Asia. Tons of dust is lifted and left as a thin film over the ocean surface. The dust fuels oceanic life.

Dust from China is carried east and left in the Pacific Ocean. If a tree-planting programme there is successful and the dust supply reduced, the net result may be that less carbon dioxide gets locked away in the ocean.

Andy Ridgwell, an environmental scientist from the University of East Anglia, has spent the past few years studying dust and says his work "shows clearly the complexity of the system and the importance of not tinkering (粗劣地修补) with it without understanding the results. For this reason there is the need to focus on cutting carbon dioxide giving off rather than monkeying (瞎弄) about with the land surface."

An American scientist, Robert Jackson, has shown that when native grassland areas are invaded by trees, carbon is lost from the soil. "We are studying why the soil carbon disappears, but one theory is that trees do a lot more of their growing above ground compared to grasses, so less carbon goes directly into the soil from trees, " says Jackson.

In wet areas of the world, the gain from trees absorbing carbon dioxide above ground seems to be outweighed by the loss of carbon from the soil below ground.

Countries that plan to combat global warming by planting trees may have to think again.

Solutions to environmental problems are often more complex than they first appear, and understanding the Earth's climate is a very great challenge.

72. People usually hold the opinion that ____.

A. huge dust storms can destroy carbon dioxide

B. huge dust storms can destroy the oceans on the earth

C. huge dust storms can't do anything favourable for man

D. planting trees is the only way to control huge dust storms

73. Andy Ridywell, the environmental scientist, believes that ____.

A. dust plays a more important part than trees

B. trees shouldn't have been planted in dry places

C. carbon dioxide is harmful to everything

D. environmental problems are more complex than expected

74. Robert Jackson's experiment proves that ___.

A. grassland areas should be covered by forests

B. trees hold more carbon than grass

C. carbon can turn grass into dust

D. less carbon can make trees grow faster

75. The underlined word "combat" in the 9th paragraph means "____".

A. learn about B. fight against C. live with D. give up

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am writing with regard to your advertisement published in Language Today Magazine. I am interested in attending a language course in England this summer and I would appreciate some further information about your school.

Firstly, in your advertisement you mentioned that the classes are small. I would like to know the number of students you normally have in a class and what their average age would be.

Furthermore, I would be grateful if you could inform me about the out-of-school activities that are organized for the students. I would also be interested in knowing how these activities help students improve there language skills.

Finally, I would like to know exactly when this course starts and how much the accommodation costs, as these details were not mentioned in your advertisement.

I would be grateful if you would reply as soon as possible.

I look forward to hearing from you.
