Growing up with six sisters wasn’t easy. We had our share of differences of opinions over the years. My parents never had much money and even food was sometimes scarce. We were lucky to get our stomachs full. If there was dessert at night it was surely a treat.
I will never forget that summer back in 1969. Funds were very tight because my parents were building a new home. I can remember how we waited for payday as if it were a holiday. My father would stop at the bank on the way home from work so my mother could go shopping when he got home. When we returned home with the groceries, my sisters and I were like a pack of wolves tearing through the bags. Going to school also wasn't very easy. We never had any lunch money. My parents were too proud to sign us up for free lunch.
One day in 1970 knowing that the pie was in the kitchen waiting for us, dinner was hard to get down. We were having stuffed peppers that night and nobody wanted to eat them. But my mother wouldn't let anyone leave the table until everyone was finished. When my mother told us we had eaten enough, it sounded like a stampede of cattle as we raced for the kitchen. I was the first to get the pie. Then it happened that I slipped on the wet counter top and let go off the pie. I can close my eyes today and still see the vivid image of that pie slipping through the air in slow motion and landing upside down on the floor. All I could think of was all the hard work we had done that day and how fast it had been destroyed.
This is the night I'll never forget in my whole life. My family always brings it up on the holidays. Life was tough back then, but it taught us to appreciate what we have today even more.

Dolan began swimming at age 5, because his older sister Kathleen was a swimmer. "Whatever she did, I wanted to beat her," he says. While he says he was a "pool rat" as a child, he didn't aggressively pursue swimming until his freshman year in high school. Golf was his favorite sport then he played for his high school team until his junior year.
Dolan grew up in Arlington, Virginia, and his early development as a swimmer was under the guidance of Rick Curl. At the University of Michigan, he trained under head coach Jon Urbancheck, who helped mold Dolan into an Olympic champion. During breaks from school, Dolan would reunite with Curl, and in the lead-up to Sydney, he has returned home full time. In April 2000, Dolan told the Detroit Free Press, "My whole career I had gone back and forth, but now I'm spending the whole year with Rick. But where I go and swim, I'I1 always be linked to Michigan and to Jon, just as I will to Rick.”
Dolan was 18 when he entered the 1994 World Championships. He remembers being near to all the big stars and noticing they were staring at him. He won the 400 IM title in world record time. He successfully defended hid world title four years later in Perth, Australia.
Dealing with asthma and poor air quality, Tom Dolan could barely breathe at the 1996 Atlanta Games. But as the reigning World Champion and world record-holder in the 400-meter individual medley, he was determined to win Olympic gold "My legs were burning pretty bad, and I couldn't get any oxygen. I knew it was between me and Eric, and I just gave it everything I had coming into the wall," says Dolan. He touched first, just ahead of fellow-American Eric, who got the silver.

What exactly is a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it something more than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you. You say "I wish I could help you but I'm short of money myself." In fact, you are not short of money but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debts and you don't want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this really a lie?
Professor Jerald Jullion of the University of Southern California has made a scientific study of lying. According to him, women are better liars than men, particularly when telling a "white lie", such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks awful. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researchers say that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intention of fulfilling. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at: the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way.
Research has also been done into the changes of people's behavior in a dumber of small, clearly unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the time they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying "I wish I were somewhere else now". They also tend to touch certain parts of the face more often, in particular the nose. One explanation of this may be that lying causes a slight increase in blood pressure. The nose is very sensitive to such changes and the increased pressure makes it itch(发痒).
Another gesture which gives liars away is that the writer Desmond Morris in his book Manwatching calls "the mouth cover". He says there are several typical forms of this, such as covering part of the mouth with fingers, touching the upper--lip or putting a finger of the hand at one side of the month. Such a gesture can be understood as an unconscious attempt on the part of the liar to stop himself or herself from lying.
Of course, such gestures as rubbing the nose or covering the mouth, or moving about in a chair cannot be taken as proof that the speaker is lying. They simply tend to occur more frequently in this situation. It is not one gesture alone that gives the liar away but a whole number of things, and in particular the context in which the lie is told.
64. According to the passage a "white lie" seems to be a lie ___________.
A. that other people believe
B. that other people don't believe
C. told in order to avoid offending someone
D. told in order to take advantage of someone
65. Research suggests that women _____.
A. are better at telling lies than men do B. generally lie far more than men
C. often make promises they intend to break D. lie at parties more often than men do
66. Researchers find that when a person tells lies ___________.
A. his blood pressure increases measurably
B. he looks very serious
C. he tends to make some small changes in his behaviors
D. he uses his unconscious mind
67. One reason people sometimes rub their noses when they lie is that ________.
A. they wish they were somewhere else
B. the nose is sensitive to physical changes caused by lying
C. they want to cover their mouths
D. they are trying to stop themselves from telling lies
68. Which of the following may best betray(出卖) a liar?
A. The touching of the tip of one's nose. B. The change of one's behaviors.
C. "The mouth cover" gesture. D. The situations in which his lies are told.

IELTS Strategies
Planning Your Writing
Before you start writing, you should first make a plan. Having a plan will help make your writing more organized and you do get marks for that. You make a plan by thinking about the question and deciding what you will write about. Your plan is a list of what you will write, written in a very short way. You can write the plan down on the question paper. For every task, first read the question carefully and then develop a plan. The plan should be like a list. Each point in the list will become a paragraph when you write it up.
Focusing On Your Reader
Whatever you write, you must focus on your reader. You are not writing for yourself. In each writing task ii1 the IELTS lest, you :ire told who you are writing for. This is to test whether you know how to write appropriately as well as how to write accurately. You must use the appropriate style, which means using the right type of language for a specific situation, for a specific reader. If you wrote "Hi! How are you?" in a report, you would be using the wrong style.
In the IELTS test, you must do only what the task tells you to do and no more than that. You must write about a particular topic for a particular reader. Focusing on your reader will help you to make sure that everything you write is relevant. If you don't do what the task tells you to do, you will lose marks. For example, if the task asks you to give your opinion about whether school children should wear uniforms, don't write about taking examinations at school. That is not relevant. If the task asks you to give your opinion about banning smoking, don't write about banning alcohol. That is not relevant and you will lose marks.
Checking Your Writing
It is important to check your writing while you write and after you have finished writing. Don't be afraid to erase or cross out words. When you check your writing, you need to:
● Check the content-- is everything clear and relevant?
● Check the accuracy of your writing--is the grammar and spelling correct ?
● Check the presentation---is everything neat and clear?
69. What shouldn't we do while planning our writing?
A. Thinking about the question.
B. Write down what we will write in brief.
C. Read the question carefully before developing a plan.
D. Write up the plan paragraph by paragraph.
70. It can be learned from the passage that _______.
A. using the right style while making a plan is very important
B. the more we write, the higher marks we will get
C. the author doesn't encourage us to write something having nothing to do with the task
D. the idea whether children should wear uniforms can be supported by banning smoking

More surprising, perhaps, than the current difficulties of traditional marriage is the fact that marriage itself is alive and increasing. As Skolnick notes, Americans are a marrying people: relative to Europeans, more of us marry at younger age. Moreover, after failing in the early 1970s, the rate of marriage in the United States is now increasing. Even the divorce rates need to be taken in this pro-marriage context: some 80 percent of divorced individuals remarry. Thus, marriage remains, by far, the preferred way of life for the vast majority of people in our society.
What has changed more than marriage is the nuclear family. Twenty-five years ago, the typical American family consisted of a husband, a wife, and two or three children. Now, there are many marriages in which couples have decided not to have any children. And there are many marriages where at least some of the children are from the wife's previous marriage, or the husband's, or both, sometimes these children spend all of their time with one parent from the former marriage; sometimes they are shared between two former spouses.
Thus, one can find every type of family arrangement. There are marriages without children; marriages with children for only the present marriage; marriages with "full-time" children from both the present and former marriages; marriages with "full-time" children from the present marriage and "part-time" children from former marriages. There are stepfathers, stepmothers, half-brothers, and half-sisters. It is not all that unusual for a child to have four parents and eight grandparents! These are enormous changes from the traditional nuclear family. But even so, even in the midst of all this, there remains one constant: most Americans spend most of their adult lives married.
71. By calling Americans marrying people the author means that
A. Americans are more traditional than Europeans
B. Americans expect more out of marriage than Europeans
C. there are more married couples in the USA than in Europe
D. more of Americans as compared with Europeans, prefer marriage and they accept it at a younger age
72. Divorced Americans _______.
A. will most likely remarry B. prefer the way they live
C. have lost faith in marriage D. are the vast majority of people in the society
73. Which of the following can be presented as the picture of today's American families?
A. A typical American family consists of only a husband and a wife.
B. Many types of family arrangements have become socially acceptable.
C. Americans prefer to have more kids than before.
D. There are no nuclear families any more.
74. The "nuclear family" refers to _______.
A. families formed up by men or women working for nuclear power stations
B. married couples who are closely matched
C. family consists of married couples who do not want to have any child
D. family with small number of members
75. "Part-time" children ________.
A. spend some of their time with their half-brothers and some of their time with their half-sisters
B. spend all of their time with one parent from the previous marriage
C. are shared between the two former spouses
D. cannot stay with "full-time" children

M: Jessica! Yes, it must be over six months! The last time we met was at Graham's wedding, wasn't it?
W: Graham's wedding? Yes, it must have been then. Anyway, it's good to see you! How're you getting along?
M.. Not too bad. And you? You're getting fat. Your husband must be feeding you too much!
W: (laughing) Yes, Denis is a good cook. I guess I should reduce a little, though. The trouble is, I'm not getting any exercise. No time.
M: Still working at that company, then? You should have taken that job at our place when they offered it to you. It's strictly a five--day week and the weekends are all your own.
W: I guess I should have. Denis often says I shouldn't do so much overtime. I hardly ever see the children any more.
M: Denis's right. You ought to spend more time with the family. Think it over, Jessica. I could ask the boss. The offer might still be open.

I like football and I hope I will be allowed to play football again.
I like football so much, which, I think, is all I can do. I can't live without football. When I am watching a football match, I am excited. When I am playing football, I am more excited. Football, so to speak, can make me happy at any time.
I like football so much that I may realize my dream of becoming a famous footballer in the future. I have a two-hour training every day as I always believe "Where there is a will, there is a way." So I can't give up playing football.
I like football so much, which can keep me healthy. I enjoy every minute when I'm playing football. I think this kind of sport is my only choice. Anyhow, I have done something for the school team, haven't I?
But I know being crazy about football is more or less harmful to my studies. Now I promise that I will spend more time on all the subjects. I am sure I will make progress after a period of time. Please don't let me be off the team, OK?
