It was midnight in Paris and we were rolling toward Avenue Bosguet. As we came to the Pont Alexandra Ⅲ, the taxi slowed down, for the traffic light was red against us, and then, without stopping, we sailed through the red in a sudden burst of speed. The same performance was repeated at the Alma Bridge. As I paid the driver, I asked him why he had driven through two red lights.
“You ought to be ashamed of yourself, breaking the law and endangering your life that way,” I protested(抗议).
He looked at me, astonished. “Ashamed of myself? I am a law-abiding(守法的) citizen and have no desire to get killed either.” He cut me off before I could protest.
“No, just listen to me before you complain. What did I do? Went through a red light. Well, did you ever stop to consider what a red light is, what it means?”
“Certainly,” I replied. “It’s a stop signal and means that traffic is rolling in the opposite direction.”
“Half-right,” said the driver, “but incomplete. It’s only an automatic(自动的) stop signal. And it does not mean that there is cross traffic. Did you see any cross traffic during our trip? Of course not. I slowed down at the light, looked carefully to the right and to the left. Not another car on the street at this hour. Well, then! What would you have me do? Should I stop like a stupid animal because an automatic, brainless machine turns red every forty seconds? No, sir,” he shouted. “I am a man, not a machine. I have eyes and a brain and judgment, given me by God. Ashamed of myself, you say? I would only be ashamed of myself if I let those blinking lamps do my thinking for me. Good night, sir.”
Is this bad, is this good? Frankly I no longer am sure…

After a long period of studies, scientists are uncovering surprising new finding about dolphins (海豚). They believe that dolphins do “talk” to each other, whistling “names” among themselves and others in their group. They help one another when in trouble. Like bats, they use sound waves to “see”. Because of these and other findings, many scientists now place dolphins among the cleverest animals on earth.
Dolphins love to mimic (模仿). If we swim on our backs, they do too. If we dive, they follow. Once a trainer blew a puff of (一口) cigarette smoke against the window of an observation tank, a young dolphin swam to its mother, nursed a moment, and spit out a cloud of milk against the glass.
It is even more surprising that dolphins are able to understand sign language. One of Herman’s dolphins has mastered more than 50 sign words. And they can also mimic the signatures of others. Now scientists are learning how dolphins “speak” to each other.
Dolphins help one another. When birth-giving takes place, females gather to keep off sharks. Later, while the mother looks for food, they take care of the young dolphin, swimming in a circle.
Dolphins reach out to us in astonishing ways. What would the world be like without them?

Dear Editor:
While a new school term is about to begin, perhaps we should reconsider the matter of examinations. In July, tow writers(letters to the editor) praised the cancellation(取消)of exams because they believe “Tests don’t tell the whole story”.
As a teacher who has worked in four countries, I have had the experience that a student who earns good marks is generally a good student, and a student’s final mark in a subject is usually a grade average of the year’s work. Of course there are expectations, but they do not have the frequency that would give an unfair picture of a student’s ability.
The simple fact is that proper class work; diligent exam studies and good marks are almost certain indicators (指示) of a student’s future performance. The opposite is, almost certainly, incompetence.
There is no acceptable substitute for competition of quality. How can teachers and future officials determine what a student has learned and remembered? Should we simply take the student’s mark for it? Any institution that “liberates” students from fair and formal exams is misguided, if not ignorant (无知的) and surely the “graduates ” of such institutions will lack trustworthiness(信赖), not to mention being rejected by foreign universities for graduate or other studies.
When all is said and done, I sense that a fear of failure and a fear of unpleasant comparison() with others are at the bottom of most ban-exam talks. Excellence and quality fear nothing. On the contrary, they seek competition and desire the satisfaction of being the best.
67. According to the letter, a student’s final mark ____________ .
A. is often encouraging B. often tells whether he likes the object or not
C. often prove unreliable D. often gives a fair picture of the year’s work
68. The two writers mentioned in the first paragraph____________ .
A. seemed to be worried about the poor marks of their students
B. must have proposed other ways of testing students
C. opposed judging students by the results of exams
D. regarded exams as a way of punishing students
69. Which of the following will be the author of this passage probably agree with?
- Tests are an effective measure of the students’ abilities.
- Tests are not effective in measuring the students’ abilities.
- Tests can only measure some of the students’ abilities.
- Tests may not be useful for measuring students’ abilities
70. If a student graduated from a university which does not require exams, he would________ .
- have to continue his studies
- not be admitted by foreign institutions
- be incompetent
- have a feeling of failure
71. According to the writer of the letter, those who oppose exams __________ .
A. are incompetent teachers B. fear failure
C. have no confident in competition D. both B and C

The London Stock Exchange has always been famous has always been famous as a place for men only, women used to be strictly forbidden to enter. But the world is changing day by day, and even the Stock Exchange, which seemed to be a man’s castle, is gradually opening its door to the other sex. On 16th November 1971, a great decision was taken. The Stock Exchange council ( the body of men that administers the Stock Exchange) decided that women should be allowed on to the new trading floor when it opened in 1973. But the “castle” had not been completely conquered. The first girls to work in “The House” were not brokers(经济人) or jobbers. They were neither allowed to become partners in stock broking firms, nor to be authorized dealers in stocks and shares. They were simply junior clerks and telephone operators.
Women have been trying to get into the Stock Exchange for many years. Several votes have been taken in “The House” to see whether the members would be willing to allow women to become members, but the answer has always been “No”. There have been three refusals of this kind since 1967. Now women are admitted although in a very junior capacity(地位). Two firms of jobbers made an application to the Stock Exchange Council to be allowed to employ girl clerks. Permission was finally given. A member of the Stock Exchange explained, after this news had been given “The new floor is going to be different from the old one. All the jobbers will have their own stands, with space for a telephone and typewriters. Therefore there will have to be typists and telephone operators. So women must be allowed in.” This decision did not mean a very great victory in the war for equal rights for women. However, it was a step to the right direction. The chairman of the Stock Exchange said, “I think that the opening of the new building will eventually lead to women being allowed to have full membership of the Stock Exchange. It’s only a matter of time, it must happen.”
72. It was not until 16th November, 1971 that________.

A. were allowed to enter “The House” in a very junior capacity.
B. served as brokers or jobbers in “The House”.

74. Who had the power to decide whether or not to employ girl clerks?
A. The Stock Exchange Council.
B. Any member of the Council.
C. The firms of jobbers.
D. The chairman of brokers.
75. According to the context, “It is only a matter of time” implies _______________.

参考范文:
Near-sightedness is a serious problem among the youth of our country. Some 65 to 70 percent of young people are near-sightedness that is caused by undue emphasis on success in entrance examinations and long hours of homework. Another obvious reason is that children watch too much television, often sitting right in front of the TV set for hours without rest.
I have some suggestions for solving this problem. Parents should regulate their children’s television viewing. We must keep a proper distance when watching TV or reading, and we must not read in too dim or bright light. We should take breaks during study periods to rest our eyes
