In 1901, H. G. Wells, an English writer, wrote a book describing a trip to the moon. When the explorers landed on the moon, they discovered that the moon was full of underground cities. They expressed their surprise to the “moon people” they met. In turn, the “moon people” expressed their surprise. “Why,” they asked, “are you traveling to the outer space when you don’t even use your inner space?”

H. G. Wells could only imagine travel to the moon. In 1969, human beings really did land on the moon. People today know that there are no underground cities on the moon. However, the question that the “moon people” asked is still an interesting one. A growing number of scientists are seriously thinking about it. Underground systems are already in place. Many cities have underground car parks. In some cities, such as Tokyo, Seoul and Montreal, there are large underground shopping area. The Chunnel, a tunnel connecting. England and France, is now complete.

But what about underground cities? Japan’s Taisei Corporation is designing a network of underground systems called “Alice Cities”. The designers imagine using surface space for public parks and using underground space for flats, offices, shopping, and so on. A solar dome (太阳能穹顶) would cover the whole city. Supporters of underground development say that building down rather than building up is a good way to use the earth’s space. The surface, they say, can be used for farms, parks, gardens, and wilderness. H. G. Wells’ “moon people” would agree. Would you?

56.The explorers in H. G. Wells’ story were surprised to find that the “moon people” ________.

A. knew so much about the earth

B. understood their language well

C. lived in so many underground cities

D. were ahead of them in space technology

C. Meeting the “moon people” again.

D. Traveling more to the outer space.

58.What sort of underground systems are already here with us?

A. Offices, shopping areas, power stations.

B. Tunnels, car parks, shopping areas.

C. Gardens, car parks, power stations.

Empty supermarket shelves are now easy to see in Harbin City, as citizens store water and food, fearing that the city’s water supply could be polluted.

Officials try to calm panic buyers.

Wan Liming (Heilongjiang vice governor): “You don’t have to worry or get excited. We have huge amounts of water, and we’ll control the price of water; we’ll ensure enough water for everyone. Just don’t panic.”

“This will last four or five days,” he adds.

More bottled water is shipped into Harbin from other cities, while technicians shut off the flow and begin testing the water. Earlier this month, an explosion hit a petrochemical plant in the neighboring city of Jilin, killing at least five people, and forcing tens of thousands to leave their home. The sprawling plant sits right next to the Songhua River — Harbin’s main source of water supply. Lab tests have confirmed that the poisonous chemical benzene (苯) has leaked into the river.

Zhang Zuoji (Heilongjiang Governor): “The pollution has led to the shutdown of water supply to the city of a few million people. This is a matter we must not take lightly. Officials from the various authorities must treat this matter with the greatest importance and see to it that we can resume our water supply to the city.”

It’s also bad news for the city’s tourism and other industries. Tourists flock to Harbin to see the annual Ice Festival, featuring sculptures carved out of ice this time of the year. For the city officials, however, the biggest danger of Harbin’s water crisis will be that of losing public trust.

A. Shutting off the flow. B. Carrying bottled water there.

C. Pumping water from the river. D. Testing the water in the river.

65.What is the basic cause of the Harbin’s water problem?

A. The explosion of a plant. B. The frightened citizens.

C. The need of water. D. The poisonous chemical.

66.What the officials are most afraid of is ________.

London (Reuters) — Organic fruit, delivered right to the doorstep. That is what Gabriel Gold prefers, and he is willing to pay for it. If this is not possible, the 26-year-old computer technician will spend the extra money at the supermarket to buy organic food.

“Organic product is always better,” Gold said. “The food is free of pesticides (农药) and you are generally supporting family farms instead of large farms. And it is locally grown and seasonal, so it is more tasty.” Gold is one of a growing number of shoppers buying into the organic trend, and supermarkets across Britain are counting on more like him as they grow their organic food business.

But how many shoppers really know what they are getting, and why are they willing to pay a higher price for organic product? Market research shows that Gold and others who buy organic food can generally give clear reasons for their preferences — but their knowledge of organic food is far from complete. For example, small amounts pesticides can be used on organic products. And about three quarters of organic food in Britain is not local but imported (进口) to meet growing demand. “The demand for organic food is increasing by about one third every year, so it is a very fast-growing market,” said Sue Flock, a specialist in this line of business.

67.More and more people in Britain are buying organic food because ________.

A. they are getting cheaper

B. they can get the food anywhere

C. they consider the food free of pollution

D. they like home-grown fruit

D. The higher prices of organic food.

69.Which of the following is true about most organic product sold in Britain?

From its massive trade surplus (顺差) with United States to America’s increasing deficit (赤字) , China’s economy has become increasingly combined with the world’s. And this wouldn’t be possible without the unusual savings of ordinary Chinese who save about half of what they earn.

Dong Yiyuan, a 58-year-old Chinese woman, is putting away money at a post office which is also a savings bank. Dong says her spending and savings habits were formed during the 1960s and 70s, when they bought everything according to the government’s arrangement.

Now China’s societies can build social security and health insurance systems. But for Mrs. Dong, she sees no reason to change her financial habits now, and she has no interest in credit cards, loans or insurance. She says, “I won’t buy things on credit. If I were to borrow money, I’d be nervous.”

China’s high savings rate allows a high investment rate. This helps Chinese factories produce more goods for the U. S. market. It also enables China’s Central Bank to buy U. S. dollars in large amounts which in turn keeps US interest rates low. But economists warn that it’s risky for China to do so. Tang Ming, a chief economist, notes that with 45% GDP investment, China creates the 9.5% GDP growth. Similar country like India, the saving rate or investment rate is around 24 or 25%. They create a 7% growth.

Tang says the government could encourage consumer spending if it invested less in unprofitable (没利润的) factories, and more on health, education and reducing poverty. He adds that the answer to the savings rate problem lies partly in future generations of Chinese.

72.Why does the author take Dong Yiyuan as an example in talking about savings?

A. To show the advantages of savings.

B. To point out the cause of China’s poverty.

C. To show the American should learn from the Chinese.

D. To say that the Chinese like saving.

73.Why do you think the woman would feel nervous to borrow money from others?

A. She had no such habit. B. She was rich enough.

C. She didn’t trust in others. D. She hardly used money.

74.Tang Ming mentioned India when comparing GDP investment and GDP growth to say ___。

A. the Chinese government invested less in unprofitable factories

B. China developed faster than India in economy

C. the efficiency of Chinese economy is relatively low

D. India is stronger than China in economy

75.According to Tang Ming, it should be encouraged to _________.

A. use more money on health and education

B. continue to spend money the way people used to

C. keep the saving habits that people have

D. build more factories to reduce poverty

书面表达

One possible version:

Dear Sir or Madam,

According to the agreement, we plan to send twenty-five students and teachers to your school for a study tour this summer for two weeks. Now I’d like to tell you something about our group and what we’d like you to arrange for us.

Our group is made up of two women teachers and twenty-three students, twelve of whom are boys. It is better for us to live in host families so that we can have opportunities to practice our spoken English.

We’d better have English classes in the morning , and in the afternoon, do some sight-seeing in London and take part in sports and some other activities with the students of your school. We’d like to visit some other cities within the country at the weekends.
