The United States became a rich industrial nation toward the end of the 1800s.There Were more goods, more services, more jobs, and a high standard of living. There was more of everything.including problems. One problem was monopoly—that is,to be the only seller of a certain line of products or a service. In some cases, several companies that made the same product  would  agree not to compete with one another. They would all agree to charge the same price.

These agreements made it impossible for buyers to shop around for lower prices for certain  porducts. Some people decided that huge companies had too much power and controlled too many markets. Because of their wealth and power, they could see to it that governments passed laws favorable to them. Many people believed that monopoly and price fixing were bad for buyers and  bad for the country so that they should be broken up.Finally, the national government and some  states passed laws that placed limits on big companies These laws made it illegal(非法的)for  companies  to make agreements to charge only a certain price.Later on the national government forced monopoly to be broken up.Such laws and government action didn’t entirely do away with monopoly.Nor did they stop the growth of huge companies. But they did show the American people had decided that some of the changes that had taken place were harmful.

With the start of BBC World Service Television, millions of viewers in Asia and America can now watch the Corporations news coverage,ad well as listen to it.

And of course in Britain listeners and viewers can tune in to two BBC television channels, five BBC national radio services and dozens of local radio stations. They are brought soprt, comedy, drama, music, news and current affairs, education, religion, parliamentary coverage, children’s programmes  and films for and annual licence fee of 83 per household.

It is a remarkable record, stretching back over 70 years—yet the BBC’s future is now in doubt. The Corporation will survive as a publicly—funded broadcasting organization,at least for the time being, but its role, its size and its programmes are now the subject of a nation—wide debate in Britain.

The debate Was launched by the Government, which invited anyone with an opinion of the BBC—including ordinary listeners and viewers—to say what was good or bad about the Corporation, and even whether they thought it was worth keeping. The reason for its inquiry is that the  BBC’s royal charter runs out in 1996 and it must decide whether to keep the organization as it is,or to make changes.

Defenders of the Corporation—of whom there are many—are fond of quoting the American slogan“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.The BBC“ain’t broke”,they say,by which they mean it is  not broken(as distinct from the word ‘broke’,meaning having no money),so why bother to change it?

Yet the BBC will have to change, because the broadcasting world around it is changing. The commercial TV channels—ITV and channel 4一were required by the Thatcher Government’s  Broadcasting  Act  to become more commercial, competing with each other for advertisers ,and cutting costs and jobs. But it is the arrival of new satellite channels—funded partly by advertising and partly by viewers’ subscriptions—which will bring about the biggest changes in the long term.

61.The world famous BBC now faces______

A.the problem of news coverage   B.an uncertain prospect

C.inquiries by the general public D.shrinkage of audience

62.In the passage, which of the following about the BBC is not mentioned as the key issue?

B.Programs as the subject of a nation-wide debate

  C.Potentials for further international co-operation

D.Its existence as a broadcasting organization

A.the finacial support from the royal family

B.the privileges granted by the Queen

  C.a contract with the Queen

D.a unique relationship with the royal family

64.The foremost reason why the BBC has to readjust itself is no other than______.

A.the emergence of commercial TV channels

B.the enforcement of Broadcasting Act by the government

C.the urgent necessity to reduce costs and jobs

C

CATV is a short way of saying“community antenna(社区天线)television.”But“cable television”is the  term  most people use.Cable television allows  viewers to receive TV programs  that they cannot pick up with their regular antennas.

Television signals do not follow the curve(曲线)of the earth. They travel in straight lines in all directions.Signals from a TV station move toward the horizon(地平线)and then  go into  space. If you live only a few miles from a station, you may not get any picture at a11.

CATV began in 1948.People in places far from TV stations shared the cost of putting up high antennas.A community antenna was usually placed on a hill,a mountain,or on a high tower. The antenna picked  up TV  singals  and fed them into a small local station. From the station, thick wires called cables ran out to nearby homes. Each person using the cable paid a monthly charge.

CATV worked well.and soon new uses were found for it.Local stations could feed programs into empty channels that were not in use.People along the cable could have local news, weather  reports, and  farm and school news at no extra charge.

Today, cable television has moved into cities. It brings in extra programs that city viewers with regular antennas cannot see.It is also used in many classrooms throughout the country.

65.From the first paragraph we know that____ .

D.regular antennas cannot pick up TV programs

“Creativity is the key to a brighter future.”says education and business experts. Here is  how schools and parents can encourage this important skill in children.

If Dick Drew had listened to his boss in 1 925,we might not have a product that we now think of as of great importance:a new type of tape.Drew worked for the Minnesota Mining Company. At work he developed a kind of material strong enough to hold things together. But his boss told him not to think more about the idea. Finally, using his own time,Drew improved the tape, which now is used everywhere by many people. And his former companty learned from its mistake. Now it encourages people to spend 1 5 percent of their work time just thinking about and developing new ideas.

Creativity is not something one is just born with, nor is it necessarily a character of high intelligence. The fact that a person is highly intelligent does not mean that he uses it creatively.Creativity is the matter of using the resources one has to produce new ideas that are good for something.

Unforunately, schools have not tried to encourage creativity. With strong attention to test resuits and the development of reading, writing and mathematical skills, many educators give up creativity for correct answers. The result is that children can give back information but can’t recognize ways to use it in new situation. They may know the rules correctly but they are unable to use them to work out practical problems.

It is important to give children choices. From the earliest age, children should be allowed to make decisions and understand their results.Even if it’s choosing between two food items for lunch,decision-making helps thinking skills. As children grow older, parents should let their children decide how to use their time or spend their money. This is because the most important  character of creative people is a very strong desire to find a way out of trouble.

69.What did the company where Drew once worked learn from its mistake?

A.They should encourage people to work a longer time.

B.People should be discouraged to think freely.

C.People will do better if they spend most of their work time developing new ideas.

D.It is necessary for people to spend some of their work time considering and improving new ideas.

 70.Creativity is .

A.something that most people are born with

B.something that has nothing to do with intelligence at all

C.a way of using what one has learned to work out new problems

D.something that is not important to the character of a person at all

71.Why don’t schools try to encourage creativity?

A.They don’t understand the importance of education.

B.They don’t want their students to make mistakes.

C.They pay too much attention to examination marks, language and maths skills.

D.They think it more important to remember some information.

72.What should the parents do when their children decide how to spend their money?

  A.Help them when necessary.

B.Try to help them as much as possible

C.Leave the children as they are

E

There are two kinds of physical activity which require special training. The first demands exact, careful movements of the muscles. This kind of activity must be strictly controlled because even  a single movement in the wrong direction will lead to a mistake. To type quickly, for example,a person needs training;the slightest movement of a finger in the wrong direction may cause a spelling mistake.A dancer who has to dance on the point of her shoes or turn around on one foot must be trained for a long period of time because she can sense her own center and balance herself. You may have seen a girl walking on a rope across an empty space, which, too, requires a lot of practice.

The second kind of physical activity needs greater strength or extra effort. Most of us get tired if we try to run a mile without stopping, but a specially-trained person can do this without much effort.Three years ago, some scientists carried out experiments, which produced meaningful and  unexpected results. They wanted to find out whether a certain amount of physical exercise would injure  those suffering from heart problems. They selected some male patients and trained them in continuous bicycle riding. They were surprised to find that the harmful effect of a given amount of physical effort was actually less on the hearts of these trained patients than on those of the patients who were not similarly trained. This is important because it shows that regular physical exercise enables us to make better use of the oxygen we breathe in and that this training,in fact, reduces the amount of work our hearts do.Many tasks which are hard for untrained people are not hard at all for trained people.

73.The first kind of physical activity must be stritly controlled because_______.

A.a mistake in the wrong direction is dangerous to the fingers

B.a wrong movement in a wrong direction will cause no mistakes

C.a movement in the wrong direction will cause a mistake

D.a slightest movement of a finger will lead to a mistake

74.What must a dancer do before she can balance herself?

A.She must dance on the point of her shoes.

  B.She must receive long-time training.

C.She must turn around on one foot.

D.She must perform again and again.

75.The experiment done by some scientists showed that_____.

A.some male patients were asked to ride bicycles regularly in the experiments

B.the physical exercise had more harmful effect on the hearts of the untrained patients

C.the physical exercise was harmless to the male patients with heart trouble

D.the physical exercise could be helpful for the patients to take in more oxygen

书面表达参考答案:

Recently We have had a heated discussion on Whether people should keep pets at home in cities.

Some students think it’s a good idea to keep pets because many old people who live alone at home can get some comfort from pets. Besides, getting along well with animals will make our life interesting. On the countrary, the other students are against the idea. In their opinions, if too many people keep gets at home, it is bad for the environment. What is worse, pets may make too much noise and even attack people.

I like animals, so I don’t think it’s bad to keep pets at home. But we must take some measures to prevent them from polluting our environment.
