第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

  阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

Many people often say there is more stress (压力) in today's society than in years past. In fact, these people are comparing our lives with that of the cave man, who didn't have to worry about the stock market or the atomic bomb. They forget that the cave man worried about being eaten by a hear while he was asleep, or about dying of hunger--things that few people worry much about today.

Actually stress is a normal state of affairs, and it's important that people understand what they are talking about when they speak about stress. Whenever anyone experiences something unpleasant, for lack of a better word they say they are under stress. Yet there is such a thing as pleasant stress--as in the case of the Olympic winner at the moment of his glory, or a conductor as his orchestra(乐队) performs particularly well. They are just sending out excitement, and they are giving off all the stress hormones(荷尔蒙)exactly the same as if they were in low spirits or had just heard of a death in the family. We call the pleasant or healthy kind "eustress” and the unpleasant or unhealthy kind "distress".

Then how can people deal with stress? The secret is not to avoid it but to "do your own thing". It implies doing what you like to do and what you are made to do at your own speed. For most people, it is really a matter of learning how to live and how to behave in various situations, to decide: “Do I really want to take my father's business or be a musician?” If you really want to be a musician, then be one.

56. What can be inferred from the first paragraph?

  A. Modern people experiences more stress than the cave man.

  B. The cave man experienced more stress than modern people.

  C. People don't suffer more stress today; it's just that they think they do.

  D. Modern people have the same worries as the cave man did.

57. In which of the following situations will you feel "eustress"?

  A. Your favorite football team has lost an important game.

  B. You have failed an important examination.

  C. You are informed of an accident of your best friend.

  D. You have won the first prize in an English competition.

58. The purpose of writing the passage is to let us know

  A. stress does not necessarily refer to unpleasant experience

  B. distress is what people call the pleasant kind of stress

  C. an Olympic winner feels the same stress as one who loses a family member

  D. people will feel eustress and distress at the same time

59. According to the passage, how can people deal with stress?

  A. Do things that you really want to do.

  B. Do whatever you're expected to do.

  C. Try to do things successfully.

D. Refuse to do whatever you're told to.

B

The playwright George Bernard Shaw once said humorously, "England and America are two nations divided by a common language. If he were writing today, he might add "divided by a common technology--E-mail."

Two completely different styles of e-mail have formed on either side of the Atlantic--Euromail and Amerimail. Amerimail is informal and chatty. It's likely to begin with a "Hi"and end with a "Bye". The chances of Amerimail containing a smiley face or an "xoxo" are disturbingly high. We Americans are unwilling to dive into the meat of an e-mail. We feel we have to first inform recipients(收信人)about our vacation on the island which was really excellent except the jellyfish were biting and the kids caught a bad cold, so we had to skip the whale watching trip, but about that investors' meeting in New York…. Amerimail is a bundle of contradictions (矛盾), casual and yet direct, respectful yet over proud. In other words, Amerimail is America.

Euromail is stiff and cold often beginning with a formal "Dear Mr. X" and ending with a simple "Sincerely". You won't find any mention of kids or the weather or jellyfish in Euromail. It's all business. It's also slow. Your correspondent (通信者)might take days even weeks to answer a message. Euromail is exactly like the Europeans themselves.

Recently about 100 managers were asked on both sides of the Atlantic whether they noticed differences in e-mail styles. Most said yes. Here are a few of their observations:

"Americans tend to write (e-mails) exactly as they speak."

"Why don't you just call me instead of writing five e-mails back and forth?"

"Europeans are less interested in checking e-mail".

"In general, Americans are much more responsive to e-mail--they respond faster and provide more information. '

So which is better, Euromail or Amerimail? I realize it's not popular these days to suggest we have anything to learn from Europeans, but I'm fed up with an inbox filled with casual, barely meaningful e-mails from friends and colleagues. If the alternative is a few earnestly written, carefully worded bits of Euromail, then I say: "Bring it on."

60. What did George Bernard Shaw mean by saying "England and America are two nations

  divided by a common language."?

  A. There is not much difference between British English and American English.

  B. Both England and America speak the common language, so they are much the same.

  C. Either England or America is a divided nation, though they share a common language.

  D. There is sharp difference between England and America despite their common language.

61. Which of the following is most likely to be the "meat" of an Amerimail?

  A. The jellyfish were biting.

  B. We had an excellent vocation on the island.

  C. We had to skip the whale watching trip.

  D. We were to attend the investors' meeting in New York.

62. On receiving an e-mail, Europeans tend to

  A. respond to it immediately and earnestly

  B. take more time than Americans to respond it

  C. respond by calling up their correspondent

  D. never respond to it at all

63. We can conclude from the passage that

  A. the different e-mail styles do much harm to the relationship between the two sides on Atlantic

  B. Amerimail is more appreciated by the writer for being informative and casually written

  C. Euromail always impresses the writer as something more pleasant to read

  D. the writer doesn't favor either email style as both have their own shortcomings

D

For as long as I can remember, I have been very bad at arguing with people. As soon as someone disagrees with me, I get angry because I feel attacked, like the other person is out to show that I am wrong. And for some reason, I hate being wrong! So my immediate reaction is to get very defensive, I raise my voice, and I end up saying something I later regret. Needless to say, the whole thing ends with me beating myself up, and the other person feeling alienated(疏远)from me. This bothers me especially because my mother does the exact same thing and I hate it!

I have noticed this tendency in me for a long time now, but I have never been able to stop. I did some anger management work with a therapist(治疗专家)a while ago, but because I moved and turned to an advisor at school who cannot see me regularly, I have not been able to continue this important work. They tell you to stop and count to 10, control your breathing, calm yourself down before you talk. But that's the whole problem, I could never think of stopping myself until it was too late! The hurtful things had already come out of my mouth, and I was stuck picking up the pieces.

Right now the problem is urgent because my relationship with a wonderful boyfriend is in danger because of my insecurity and hatred of being wrong. He is closing himself off to me because I have hurt him, and no doubt I am no longer attractive as a woman with no confidence in herself and a bad temper. How do I stop ruining my relationships and hating myself? How do I stop hating being wrong?

67. In what situation will the writer get angry easily?

  A. When she has argument with people.

  B. When people disagree with her.

  C. When she is attacked.

  D. When she does something wrong.

68. What does the underlined part in the first paragraph mean?

  A. My mother disagrees with me.

  B. My mother alienates herself from me.

  C. My mother has the same problem with me.

  D. My mother does the same wrong to me.

69. In the second paragraph, what does the underlined word "tendency" refer to?

  A. Being bad at arguing with people.

  B. Hating being wrong.

  C. Being lost to others.

  D. Hating my mother.

70. We can infer from the third paragraph that

  A. the writer feels helpless with her problem

  B. the writer finds it hard to count from one to ten

  C. the writer has received effective advice about her problem

  D. the writer is under the treatment of a therapist

71. What did the writer imply in the last paragraph?

  A. She is closing herself off to her boyfriend.

  B. She is much hurt by her boyfriend.

  C. Her boyfriend has broken up with her.

  D. She has to solve her problem in no time.

April 6, 2005 BERLIN -- It has led to numerous expeditions, several mysterious deaths and plenty of books. But 60 years after Nazi officers hid metal boxes in the depths of Lake Toplitz, a new attempt is being made to recover the Third Reich's fabled (传说中的) lost gold. The Austrian government has given a U.S. team permission to make an underwater expedition to the bottom of the lake.

Groups of treasure hunters have been racing to Lake Toplitz ever since a group of diehard Nazis escaped to this picturesque part of the Austrian Alps in the final months of the Second World War. With U. S. troops closing in and Germany on the edge of collapse (垮台), they shipped the boxes to the bank of the lake, and sunk them.

Nobody knows exactly what was inside. Some believe the boxes contained gold stolen by German troops throughout Europe and carried back to Germany. Others think that they contained documents showing where possessions confiscated (没收)from Jewish victims were hidden. The state company that controls the lake, Bundesforste AG, has signed a contract with Norman Scott, an American treasure hunter, who hopes to solve the mystery.

Later this month, Scott will begin a detailed underwater expedition of the 350-foot-deep lake, though there is official doubt that there is anything left to find. "I really don't know if there is anything down there, but we want to resolve the mystery once and for all," Irwin Klissenbauer, a director of Bundesforste AG, told the Guardian Tuesday. "The aim at first is to measure the lake.” He added: "This is a beautiful area. You have heard of Loch Ness. For Austrians this has been a bit like Loch Ness. Lots of people come here. And whether there is gold down there or not, the mystery has been very good for tourism."

Klissenbauer said that under the terms of the deal--which allows the U.S. team to dive for the next three years -- any treasure found will be divided between the Americans and the Austrian state. "Obviously if they recover anything which has a recognizable owner, under Austrian law we have to give it back."

72. Which is the best title of the passage?

  A. Unsolved Mystery B. Treasure Found

  C. Mysterious Lake D. New Discovery

73. What can we infer from the passage?

  A. Many books about mysterious deaths have been written so far.

  B. Treasure hunters never risked searching the lake for gold until now.

  C. Many books have been written about mysteries hidden in the Lake.

  D. Norman Scott is sure there is nothing left to find in the lake.

74. Norman Scott will make the underwater expedition mainly to ________.

  A. find evidence proving Nazi Germany's cruelty

  B. help measure the beautiful lake

  C. uncover the mystery in the lake

  D. help people get back their possessions

75. According to Austrian law and the deal reached by the Americans and the Austrian government, ________.

 A. the U. S. team is to solve the mystery in the next three years

 B. both sides will take part in the underwater expedition

 C. any treasure found will go to either the Americans or the Austrian government

 D. people might get their treasure back if there~ re proofs of their ownership
