  阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

(A)

The young boy was sitting on the ground in the refugee  (难民) camp playing with an

empty tin. Other children were standing around watching him with envious eyes.

   Envy? Of an empty tin?

This tin was indeed no worthless piece of trash--it was a splendid truck, complete with

wheels and grille (铁栅) and floor. The vehicle even had remote control, a frayed piece of

string from the "engine" to the hand of the owner.

The tin had lost all its original markings. But its first load had probably been sardines.

Later the tin had been left with other rubbish behind the refugee camp clinic, and the boy

had found it on one of his daily expeditions into the "big world".

For thousands of refugee children, a tin like this rates high on their list of wants. It can

be used for many purposes, as jewellery, as a toy, for drinking or as a medicine box.

Many refugee children would consider it the happiest day of their lives if they received a

handful of marbles(弹珠) as a present.

They dream of gifts which children in developed countries take for granted. Maybe a book

to read, or a pencil and an exercise book of their very own.

Their imagination can create toys, but it cannot create books. Someone else must provide

them. A more cosily and valuable gift they cannot imagine.

56. Other children envied the young boy because the boy

   A. had a real truck toy B. got some sardines to eat

   C. received a handful of marbles D. had something to play with

57. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

   A. An Enviable Toy Present.           B. A Splendid Truck Toy.

   C. Sardine Tin A Precious Toy. D. A Poor Befugee Camp.

58. What is implied in the last paragraph of the text?

   A. The society should donate (捐) some toys for the refugee children.

   B. The refugee children are more imaginative rather than creative.

   C. The society should offer the refugee children things for study.

   D. The refugee children are more creative rather than imaginative.

                       (B)

Surgery that can improve the way a person looks is being more and more popular in the

United Stated. This kind of surgery is called cosmetic surgery (整形手术), and both men and

women are turning to this treatment as a way of keeping their appearance young as well as

keeping competitive in their jobs. Men especially are beginning to turn to face-lifts, liposuction

(taking fat out of the body), and implants (putting man-made parts into their bodies) to help

them look younger. As companies downsize and move younger employees into higher positions, older employees in their late forties and early fifties feel the need to look and act younger in order to stay competitive. A younger look through cosmetic surgery may give an older employee a few more years on the job.

These operations are not without dangers, however. One young woman had an eye

operation to get rid of the bags under her eyes. She described her experience as terrible. She

said, "When he started cutting, I was fully awake. Even though he'd given me an injection

(注射) near my eyes, I saw everything." She went on to explain, "I knew I had to keep still

because of what he was doing. He was scraping away fat under my eyes. It took about ten

minutes. After he finished I felt I couldn't walk. I was so weak." Her troubles did not end

after the operation. For two weeks, her eyes were swollen and almost completely closed, and

even dark glasses could not hide the side effects of the operation.

Liposuction is probably the most popular cosmetic operation in the United States. It seems

simple enough. First, a small cut is made over the places where the patient wants the fat

removed. Next, a small pipe is put into the cut. A machine is then turned on, and the fat is

taken right out of the body. However, as one doctor explained, some problems can happen after

the operation. He warned, "Irregular lumps (块) and loose skin can result from this operation.

If it is not completely done, liposuction can produce a very lumpy result." Patients often must

have more liposuctions to correct the problem.

59. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?

   A. Some people want to have cosmetic surgery in order to keep their jobs.

   B. There are two reasons why people have cosmetic surgery.

   C. How older employees try to stay on their jobs for more years.

   D. A person can win the competition in the job by means of looking young.

60. How many kinds of cosmetic surgeries-does the writer mention?

   A. 5 B. 4 C. 3 D. 2

61. The underlined word "downsize" (in Para. 1) means

   A. develop branches and employ more labourers

   B. become smaller in the number of employees

   C. move downwards to other places

   D. put an end to business

 62. What do we know about liposuction from the text?

   A. An unsuccessful liposuction may lead to more operations.

   B. Most liposuction operations are successful and safe.

   C. A liposuction can be lifelong useful for people to stay young.

   D. A bad liposuction needs more doctors to make it up.

Next year, if all goes as planned, the largest maker of personal computers in Asia will

become the third largest in the world.

Lenovo Group Limited of China is buying the personal computer business of the American company IBM. International Business Machines brought millions of people their first PCs. Now it is getting out of the business of selling them. Strong competition in the industry has cut the profit (利益) in sales.

The deal is worth one thousand seven hundred fifty million dollars. This includes five hundred million dollars in debt that Lenovo will take over from IBM. Lenovo will be third in worldwide sales behind the American companies Dell and Hewlett-Packard.

Ten thousand IBM employees will go to work for Lenovo. The American company already has thousands of employees in China. IBM will hold a nineteen percent share (股份)in Lenovo.

And IBM will continue to offer services, the most profitable part of its personal computer business.

IBM helped create the market for personal computers in 1981 with a machine that became

very popular. The computer used an operating system made by a small company, Microsoft.

Another small company provided the microprocessor, the brains of a computer. That was Intel.

Intel and Microsoft grew highly profitable.

But soon, less costly computers appeared. IBM saw its market share shrink. In the end, it

stopped making its personal computers itself.

The Gartner research group estimates(估计) that IBM had a five percent share of the world

PC market this year. Lenovo had two percent. But it controls one-fourth of the Chinese market,

the largest in Asia. Lenovo was known before as Legend Computer. Members of the Chinese

Academy of Sciences began the company in 1984.

Chinese companies are  moving to expand their international business holdings. Thispurchase is one of the biggest yet. Lenovo will be able to use the IBM name for five years.

Lenovo will have the headquarters of its personal computer business in New York, with

operations in Beijing and Raleigh, North Carolina. Stephen Ward will be the CEO and Yang

Yuanqing will be the chairman. Officials expect the deal to be made final by the middle of

next year.

63. Which of the following statements is true?

   A. Lenovo will be bigger than Dell after it takes over IBM.

   B. IBM used to make a lot more money than at present.

   C. Microsoft provided the microprocessor for IBM.

   D. IBM will have to pay off the debt before the deal.

64. IBM was sold to Lenovo at a price of million dollars apart from the debt it owned.

   A. 2250        B. 1750        C. 1250        D. 500

65. We can infer that

   A. the deal has already been completed

   B. IBM sold its name to Lenovo forever

   C. Lenovo has smaller market as it had fewer shares

   D. China is now increasing its shareholding in the world computer market

66. Which of the following charts best shows the correct facts?

College libraries are designed primarily for research and study.  To explain its use, let us

choose a research topic and follow the step-by-step procedure of looking up the material for

the paper. Suppose your assignment is to write a paper on a novel called "The Sun Also

Rises" by American writer Hemingway. The first step is to go to the main catalog: Many small

drawers on the large wooden cabinets are lined up in alphabetical(字母的) order. Each of the

drawers contains hundreds of alphabetical ordered cards.  These cards are printed references to

all materials available in the library. Title cards are cataloged by the first word of the book

title, leaving out the articles like "a", "an" and "the". And then you get the cards for the

books you need. On the upper left comer of each card is the call number. This is the

numerical code that shows where the book is located in the library. The library has open and

closed stacks. If your book is on the open stacks, you can go to the open-stack room, and

according to the call number find it out by yourself.  There are only about 30,000 books on

open stacks, while most of the 800,000 books in our library are kept in closed stacks,  which

are accessible only to teachers and graduate students.  For undergraduates like you,  borrowing

books from the closed stacks have to be done with the help of our librarian. In that case, you

must fill out a call slip(纸条) for the book, showing the call number, author and title. You

can get call slips on tables near the catalog cabinets. You show your call slip together with

your library card to a librarian at the information desk. He or she will help you find the book

out in the closed stacks.

67. What is the main purpose of this text?

  A. To present readers a brief introduction to a college library.

   B. To guide readers how to find books needed in a college library.

   C. To tell readers how to fill out a call slip in a college library.

   D. To show readers where to find books in a college library.

68. What letter you should look for on the title card for the book "The Old Man and the Sea"

   by Hemingway?

   A. The letter "t".    B. The letter "h".   C. The letter "s". D. The letter "o".

69. How are books arranged and shelved in the library?

   A. By call numbers. B. By call slips of authors' names.

   C. In alphabetical order.            D. By the first word of book title.

70. Suppose you are an undergraduate and you want to borrow a book from the closed stacks,

which is the correct order to do it?

   a) go to the main catalog b) show your call slip and library card

   c) find out the call number d) fill out a call slip

   e) get the cards for the book

   A. a-b-e-d-c      B. a-e-c-d-b        C. b-a-c-d-e      D. b-c-a-e-d

John Steinbeck once said, "All Americans believe they are born fishermen. For a man to

admit to a distaste in fishing would be like denouncing  (公开指责) moiher-love or hating

moonlight."

I can't say that I'm the biggest John Steinbeck fan.  Actually, the only thing that I can

ever remember reading by him was "The Pearl" when I was in middle school, but I couldn't

agree more with the man when it comes to fishing.  Whether I am on a boat in the middle of

Lay Lake, fishing off the shores of the Florida Keys for tarpon (大海鲢) or catching rainbow

trout (虹鳟鱼) in the Shoshone River of Wyoming, fishing is my life.

According to the American Sportsfishing Association, the fishing industry brings in more

than $116 billion per year from fishermen across the country.

Though a beautiful picture to imagine, fishing is much more than that. Fishing is a way of

life for many and a way to escape everyday stress(压力). Being a fisherman makes me a

member of a wonderful group of people extending to all walks of life. Even President Bush can

be found fishing on his farm in Texas with his good friend Roland Martin when the job gets

too stressful.

I can remember fishing with my grandfather when I was 5 years old on his boat at Lake

Mitchell. Although I didn't understand what I was doing, I did know that my grandfather was

happy and that made me happy. Since then I've spent the past 16 years on the rivers and

lakes of Alabama.

After days of practice, before and after work, I 'slowly developed an understanding offishing. My boss, Ric Horst, took me back to the Shoshone, and I managed to bring in a 19-

inch cutthroat trout. Fishing with Ric was a life-changing experience for me; he not only

showed me how to fish a river correctly, but he also told me how fishing could be a way to

escape your problems.

Since then, primetime (黄金时间的) season seems to take forever to arrive.

Now, with the ending of February and beginning of March in sight, the excitement of

heading out to Lake Tuscaloosa or Lake Lurleen before classes and catching something has

finally returned.

71. What John Steinbeck said in the first paragraph implies that

   A. Americans are believed to be the offspring(后代) of fishermen

   B. it is unthinkable for an American to admit his dislike of fishing

   C. all Americans are expert at fishing

   D. those who dislike fishing would not love their mothers

72. The writer came to understand the real meaning of fishing

   A. when he was reading "The Pearl" by John Steinback

   B. when he went fishing with his grandfather at Lake Mitchell

   C. after he had spent 16 years on the rivers and lakes of Alabama

   D. after he went fishing with his boss, Ric Horst on the Shoshone

73. What can be inferred from the text?

   A. The author is at most 21 years of age.
