Hao Jinsong is facing a strong opponent(对手).So strong, in fact, that most others can do nothing but obey, but Hao doesn’t want to. He waits patiently for months, and then takes a sudden action.

Hao is a 33-year-old graduate student at China University of Political Science and law. He is bookish and not as strong as Schwarzenegger or as fast as Spider-Man. And the property he is fighting for goes for less than a bottle of water.

But, he has managed to become a real headache for his opponents—China’s railways.

And he sounds like a trouble-maker. Since last summer he has filed six lawsuits(诉讼) against the railways and Beijing’s subway. Hao has complained about some shops in the train station refusing to give him a receipt(收据),something that most passengers choose to give up.

“I’d call myself a lawyer rather than a trouble-maker,” said Hao, explaining how he bad struggled for a receipt as preparation for his complaints on purpose. “That’s the softest part of a strong administration, the only part that an ordinary man can find fault with and attack legally,” he continued”. I just want to make this hole bigger so that consumers get what they should have”

The results haven’t been so bad so far. However, thanks to Hao’s effort, at Beijing’ s No.8 Subway line people now get a receipt after paying to use the toilet there.

“Chinese need a civic consciousness(公民意识).They need to know that they are the absolute equal of the government, which should serve the taxpayers”.

Some people say that Hao is selling himself via the media. Far from denying that, Hao admits that he’s good at taking advantage of news reports In fact, he rarely has enough time for classroom work. Instead, he’s at an interview every week. He was even too busy to bother to wash his face before the interview.

C. make an application D. ask for legal proceedings

Acceptance for settlement in Britain does not, however, mean full citizenship. Naturalization (the giving of a citizenship) can only take place when certain conditions have been fulfilled, including a specific period of residence (居住) . New conditions for naturalization and a new definition of British citizenship are contained in the recent Nationality Act, introduced by the conservative government in 1981-1982.

It must be admitted that many people in Britain are worried by the way in which so many immigrants, particularly those with different religious and racial backgrounds, have been permitted to settle in such large numbers. They see them as threat to traditional British social, moral and cultural values. Tensions in some city areas between youths of different racial backgrounds have not helped to calm these fears. There is also growing concern about immigrant numbers in relation to unemployment and overcrowding.

Fears about overcrowding, however, should be balanced by British emigration statistics. In the decade 69-79 Britain lost nearly half a million people. A third of these returned to their native countries, the rest settled overseas in places like the United States, Canada and New Zealand.

Most of today’s immigrants are hardworking and are determined to accept the most of all that Britain has to offer. Many of them are employed in public services like railways and hospitals; almost half the doctors in the National Health Services are, in fact, from the new Common Wealth (英联邦国家) . On the whole, immigrants and certainly their children born in Britain are becoming mixed with the wider British Community. At the same time they are able to keep their religious and cultural roots. In this way, they contribute to the interesting variety of Britain’s multi-racial society.

60.To become a Britain citizen, one has to ________.

A. apply for the citizenship to the local authority

B. settle down in Britain

C.    live in Britain for a specific period of time

D. obey the recent Nationality Act

61.Which of the following is NOT the right reason why many people in Britain are worried?

A. The problems of unemployment and overcrowding have become serious.

B. So many immigrants have been permitted to settle down.

C. So many immigrants have different religious and racial backgrounds.

D. It is difficult to get a citizenship.

62.Fears about overcrowding should be______ if one considers the changes in the number of Britain’s immigrants.

 A. less strong B. increased C. decreased. D. kept in mind

63.Which is the best title for the passage?

A. Present State of Immigrants in Britain.

B. The Effect of the New Nationality Act.

C. Fears about Immigration in Britain.

D. Contributions of Immigrants in Britain.

C

More American people take their troubles with them on holiday, according to a new survey. Although 40 percent said that the main reason for going away is to escape pressure (压力) from work, almost all said they worry more than they do at home. Only four in every 100 said that they are happy and free of care.

The most common worry is burglary ( 入室盗窃) , with four out of 10 worrying about their homes being broken into while they’re abroad. More than a quarter fear they will feel crazy with some other noisy and rough holiday-makers and 22 percent worry they may be attacked or their possessions will be missing. One in five think the car may break down; and the same number worry about the chances of bad weather.

The survey also showed that the stay-at-home Americans are not so many as before. Three out of every five want to have a holiday abroad, a great increase from the figures only three years ago. The hotel holiday is still a winner, with about one third of all Americana preferring to go on a self-catering ( 自助 ) holiday.

VI. 书面表达:

My Opinion on Cheating in Examinations

It is known to us all that some students cheat in examinations at school.

As students, we often take examinations at school, but sometimes we have too many examinations which are too difficult for us. On the other hand, some of the students are lazy and don’t work hard at their lessons. So when taking examinations, they sometimes cheat in order to get better results to please their parents and teachers.

In my opinion, it is wrong to cheat in examinations because it breaks the rules of schools. We students should be honest and try to get good results by studying hard instead of cheating in examinations. What’s more, we should improve our study methods and get well prepared for examinations.
