阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D中选出最佳选项)

Believe it or not, optical illusion (错觉) can cut highway crashes.
Japan is a case in point. It has reduced automobile crashes on some roads by nearly 75 percent using a simple optical illusion. Bent stripes, called chevrons (人字形), painted on the roads make drivers think that they are driving faster than they really are, and thus drivers slow down.
Now the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington D.C. is planning to repeat Japan’s success. Starting next year, the foundation will paint chevrons and other patterns of stripes on selected roads around the country to test how well the patterns reduce highway crashes.
Excessive speed plays a major role in as much as one fifth of all fatal traffic accidents, according to the foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the foundation will conduct its tests in areas where speed-related hazards (危险) are the greatest — curves, exit slopes, traffic circles, and bridges.
Some studies suggest that straight, horizontal (水平的) bars painted across roads can initially cut the average speed of drivers in half. However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drivers become used to seeing the painted bars.
Chevrons, scientists say, not only give drivers the impression that they are driving faster than they really are but also make a lane (车道) appear to be narrower. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway speed and the number of traffic accidents.

56.The passage mainly discusses __________.
  A. a new way of highway speed control
  B. a new pattern for painting highways
  C. a new approach to training drivers
  D. a new type of optical illusion
57.On roads painted with chevrons, drivers tend to feel that __________.
  A. they should avoid speed-related hazards
  B. they are driving in the wrong lane
  C. they should slow down their speed
  D. they are approaching the speed limit
58.The advantage of chevrons over straight, horizontal bars is that the former ___________.
  A. can keep drivers awake
  B. can cut road accidents in half
  C. will have a longer effect on drivers
  D. will look more attractive
59.The American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety plans to __________.
  A. try out the Japanese method in certain areas
  B. change the road signs across the country
  C. replace straight, horizontal bars with chevrons
  D. repeat the Japanese road patterns
60.What does the author say about straight, horizontal bars painted across roads?
  A. They are falling out of use in the United States
  B. They tend to be ignored by drivers in a short period of time.
  C. They are applicable only on broad roads.
  D. They cannot be applied successfully to traffic circles.

The London Stock (股票) Exchange has been famous as a place for men only, and women used to be strictly forbidden to enter. But the world is changing day by day, and even the Stock Exchange, which seemed to be a men's castle, is gradually opening its doors to the other sex. On 16th November 1971, a great decision was taken. The Stock Exchange Council (the body of men that administers the Stock Exchange ) decided that women should be allowed onto the new trading floor when it opened in 1973. But the "castle" had not been completely conquered. The first girls to work in "The House" were not brokers or jobbers. They were neither allowed to become partners in stockbroking firms, nor to be authorized (授权,允许) dealers in stocks and shares. They were simply junior clerks and telephone operators.
Women have been trying to get into the Stock Exchange for many years. Several votes have been taken in "The House" to see whether the members would be willing to allow women to become members, but the answer has always been "No". There have been three refusals (反对) of this kind since 1967. Now women are admitted, although in a very junior capacity. Two forms of jobbers (股票经纪人) made an application to the Stock Exchange Council to be allowed to employ girl clerks. Permission was finally given. A member of the Stock Exchange explained, after this news had been given, "The new floor is going to be different from the old one. All the jobbers will have their own stands, with space for a telephone and typewriters, Therefore there will have to be typists and telephone operators. So women must be allowed in." This decision did not mean a very great victory in the war for equal rights for women. However, it was a step in the right direction. The Chairman of the new building will eventually lead to women being allowed to have full membership of the Stock Exchange. It is only a matter of time; it must happen.

61. The London Stock Exchange is famous_________.
A.for its favorable location
B.for its policy of opening its doors to women
C.because it has been a place for men only
D.because women are now beginning to enter its doors to work

62. Several votes have been taken in "The House"__________.

B.to decide when women would be allowed into "The House"
C.to find out whether the members were willing to allow women to become members
D.to decide when to allow women onto the new trading floor

63. Which of the following is true?
A.Since 1973 women have been allowed to work with the London Stock Exchange.
B.Women have always been refused participation in stock trading.
C.Women were never officially allowed to enter the Stock Exchange.
D.Men have been trying to get into the Stock Exchange.

64. What is this article about?
A.Women's place in society.
B.How the London Stock Exchange functioned in 1971.
C.How women have been struggling for full membership of the Stock Exchange.
D.How women were gradually allowed to work in the Stock Exchange.

C

There are three kinds of goals: short-term, medium-range and long-term goals.

Short-range goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possible months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, so long-term goals cannot amount to very much without the achievement of solid short-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short-term goals that will build on those that have been completed.

The intermediate (中间的) goals build on the foundation of the short-range goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase.

Long-range goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not a static (静止的) thing. We should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course of action.

65. Our long-term goals mean a lot _________.

A. if we complete our short-range goals

B. if we cannot reach solid short-term goals

C. if we write down the dates

D. if we put forward some plans

66. New short-term goals are bulid upon ________.

A. two years

B. long-term goals

C. current activities

D. the goals that have been completed

67. When we complete each step of our goals, _____________.

A. we will win final success

B. we are overwhelmed

C. we should build up confidence of success

D. we have made great decision

69. It is implied but not stated in the passage that ___________.

A. those who habe long-term goals will succeed

B. writing down the dates may discourage you

C. the goal is only a guide for us to reach our destination

D

What is your favourite colour? Do you like yellow, orange or red? If you do, you must be an optimist, a leader, an active person who enjoys life, people and excitement. Do you prefer greys and blues? Then you are probably quiet, shy, and you would rather follow than lead. You tend to be a pessimist (悲观者). At least, this is what psychologists tell us, and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the meaning of colours preference, as well as the effect that colours have on human beings. They tells us, among other facts, that we do not choose our favourite clour as we grow up----we are born with our preference. If you happen to love brown, you did so, as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly.

Colours do influence our moods----there is no doubt about it. A yellow room makes most people feel more cheerful and more relaxed than a dark green one; and a red dress brings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day. On the other hand, black is depressing. A black bridge over the Thames River, near London, used to be the scene of more suicides (自杀者) than any other bridge in the area ----until it was repainter green. The number of suicide attempts immediately fell sharply; perhaps it would have fallen even more if the bridge had been done in pink or baby blue.

Light and bright colours make people not only hppier but more active. It is an established fact that factory workers work better, harder, and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black or grey.

70. "You would rather follow than red" means_______.

A. you don't like to follow others

B. you would be a member rather than a leader

C. you would be afraid of following others

D. you would like to be a leader rather than a follower

71. The underlined sentence "Among other facts" in paragraph one means_________.

A. besides other facts B. in regard to other facts

C. not considering other facts D. according to other facts

72. Which of the following is facts?

A. People's preference of one colour to another is instinct.(本能的,直觉的)

B. People's preference of one colour to another is acquired as they grow up.

C. More people happen to love brown because they saw something brown when they were born

D. Colours have little influence on our moods

E

Most of us use the telephone several times a day to talk with friends or make social arrangements. These calls are usually quite easy and require little planning.

Using the telephone for business purpose is different. In any organization the person on the telephone represents the company and gives an impression of the firm to the outside world.

If you want to ensure good public relations, you need to master effective telephone techniques.

You should try to give an impression of an efficient, friendly, progressive company eager to give good service.

  Before calling

Choose the right time. Consider the cost, urgency and convenience. When calling overseas you need to consider the time difference.

Check the number. A great deal of money is wasted each year on dialing wrong numbers.

Plan your call. Make a list of points and questions to be raised.

Be prepared. Gather any files, papers or information that may be needed during the call. It is unprofessional to have to say “Hold on while I look for that.”

If you have to ask a caller to hold on, keep going back and assuring him/ her that you will be as quick as possible.

Avoid interruptions. Call at a time when you are unlikely to be distracted.

  During the call

Be courteous, polite. Make time for suitable greetings like “How are you today, Jim?” and “Did you enjoy your holiday?”

Put a smile in your voice. Remember, your caller can’t see you, so use intonation to good effect and try to sound confident, decisive, helpful and interested.

Check your notes. Look back at your notes to ensure that you have covered everything and quote figures and other data correctly.

Obtain feedback. Make sure that caller understands the message correctly, especially where deadlines and actions that are involved.

Be courteous. Finish by thanking the caller for his or her time and trouble.

  After the call

Make notes. Let it become a habit to make notes of the call and place them in an appropriate file.

Take actions. If you need to send a letter of confirmation or inform someone in your organization about any details of the call, do some immediately so that you do not forget important points.

73. What’s the main idea of this passage?

  A. Using a telephone for business has strict rules.

  B. While making a business phone call, you should be efficient first.

  C. It’s necessary to learn how to use your phone for work.

  D. The phone is playing a very important role in our daily life, especially in business.

74. Before calling, you have to ____.

  A. stay at your company only. B. learn important data and figures by heart

  C. get things ready for the communication D. choose the right time and place

75. What’s the meaning of the word “feedback”?

六、书面表达(满分25分)

Dear Editor,

I’m a senior high student. Now many students use mobile phones. They think it’s a fashion to use mobile phones. Besides, it’s very convenient to get in touch with their families and friends by using mobile phones. But some students break the rules in class. They bring their mobile phones to the classroom and we often hear the ring of mobile phones in class. Some of them even waste precious time in class typing short messages on the mobile phones .

In my opinion, the classroom is a place for students to gain knowledge. Therefore quietness is badly needed for us to learn our lessons. Those with mobile phones shouldn’t take mobile phones to the classroom. We are supposed to concentrate on our studies. The school should make a rule to forbid the students to use mobile phones in the classroom.
