These days, if you still think the cellphone is just for talking, you’ll get laughed at. Yes, it’s true, voice-only handsets have become out of date. Today’s do-it-all mobiles have a lot in common with the computer. The only difference may be that they fit in your pocket and you pay by the minute to use them. Some of the things a cellphone can do for you will be available this year:

Surf at speed

Cellphones that let you use the Web have been around for years. So, what’s new? Well, faster third-generation (3G) networks that let you surf at anywhere. This then allows a carrier to send video, music, and games to your phone. Possible choices are from LG Electronics VX 8000 and Motorola V1150.

Listen as you go

The problem with most Cellphone MP3 players is that they hold only a handful of songs. But, that’s about to change. Sony Ericsson’s new W800i can hold around 150 songs in its 500 MB memory. And Samsung’s SPH-V5400 even comes with a 1.5 GB hard drive. Mobile phones may eventually replace mini-MP3 players, especially for teens.

Say cheese

Camera cellphones are not new either. But, most of them have limitations: around 1-megapixel (百万像素). But new technology has made 2-megapixel units more common, and 3-megapixel units are showing up soon. Some 2-megapixel models, like Sony Ericsson’s K750i, offer limited zoom and focus controls. Others, like LG’s recent A7110, can even capture 30 minutes of full-motion video.

Portable TV

You say you like “watching TV”? That’s what Samsung MM-A700 wants to give you. The new model lets users watch popular TV programmes — for a fee. Other choices are Nokia’s 6620, Sanyo’s MM7400 and NEC’s N940. The NEC model lets you watch public TV — no fee.

The above are just a handful of what you’ll see in the coming months. Further down the road, your mobile phone may play a host of other roles, such as mobile credit card, position locator .... So what is there that a cellphone can’t do?

56. Which of the following models should you choose to listen to the music?

A. Samsung’s SPH-V5400 and Nokia’s 6620.

B. Sony Ericsson’s W800i and Samsung’s SPH-V5400.

C. Sony Ericsson’s W800i and NEC’s N940.

D. Sanyo’s MM7400 and NEC’s N940.

57. What’s the difference between NEC’s N940 and other models?

A. It allows you to surf the Internet at a high speed.

B. It can capture 30 minutes of full-motion video.

C. It can hold as many as 150 songs.

D. It lets you watch public TV for free.

58. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. All the functions of the models mentioned in the passage are completely new.

B. Camera cellphones of 3-megapixel units will appear soon.

C. It is certain that a cellphone can do anything in the near future.

D. Today’s do-it-all mobiles have nothing in common with the computer.

59. This passage may be ________.

A. an introduction to some new models of cellphones

B. an advertisement trying to persuade you to buy new cellphones

C. a science fiction trying to attract readers’ attention

D. a survey to find the development of cellphones

Britain is a nation of gossipmongers(爱闲聊的人), with nearly 90% of us admitting we enjoy a good chinwag(聊天) with friends and colleagues.

Research carried out by Quickbrew found 14% of people admitted they spent at least two hours a day gossiping. Work was found to be the favourite topic of conversation (20%), closely followed by current affairs (18%) and relationships (17%). Despite the media’s interest in celebrities, only 6% of people questioned said they spent most of their time gossiping about the rich and famous. Other people’s lives appear to be a great source of fascination (17%), while only 3% of us like talking about the weather. Nearly half of us prefers having a gossip face-to-face (48%), rather than on the phone (36%), by email (7%), or via text message (6%). And only 1% said they would put pen to paper to share or find out gossip.

The ICM survey of 1,004 adults across Britain also found an unsurprising gender gap when it comes to talking about relationships. Nearly a quarter of women (24%) said it was a popular topic, compared with just one in 10 men. Regional differences also appeared, with one in five people in the southeast claiming they do not spend any time gossiping. The Welsh also appeared to be rather self-controlled, with 45% saying they only spend between 15 and 30 minutes a day chatting. In contrast, one in five people in the northeast said they enjoyed chattering for more than two hours a day.

Are you tired of looking for love in all the usual places? Nowadays, millions of lonely singles are now going online instead. The World Wide Web is quickly becoming the world’s most popular matchmaker. With so many singles online, dozens of dating sites like Yahoo Personals and Match.com are helping singles find that special someone. Around the world, from America to China, love is now very much online.

Singles are flocking to the Internet mainly because their busy lifestyles leave them little time to look for a significant other. Using dating sites is quick and convenient. They can “meet” a lot more people online than they could by hanging out at a club. Besides, many singles say the regular dating scene has just led them from one bad experience to another and are ready to try something else. They also appreciate the first distance of online dating, which allows them to hide themselves until they are ready to meet someone face to face. Dating sites also make it easy to avoid someone you are not interested in. In the real world, however, ignoring someone you don’t like can be embarrassing.

Despite all the advantages, online dating also presents its own set of problems. People aren’t always who they claim to be in their online profiles. For instance, someone who tells you he is “handsome, successful and single” might turn out to be homely, unemployed and married. Safety is another concern. You are just as likely to find a criminal online as you are Mr or Miss Right.

Even so, supporters of online dating see things in a positive way. In their opinion, singles can safely play the online dating game with a little common sense. Online dating experts recommend following a few safety tips:

Guard your personal information. Never give out your personal information online. This includes your last name, phone number, home address and place of work.

Watch for red flags. Do any of the people you are chatting with make disrespectful comments? Do they try to control you? Do they give false information about themselves? If so, forget them!

Meet in a safe place. When meeting someone in person, choose a public location with other people around. Following these tips and you might be able to find the person of your dreams.

63. According to the passage, many lonely singles don’t appreciate the regular dating scene because it is ________.

A. unpopular      B. troublesome

C. convenient D. forgettable

64. This passage is mainly about ________.

65. The underlined words in the second paragraph “a significant other” mean ________.

A. a true friend B. a matchmaker

C. a marriage partner D. a happy family

66. Which of the following is NOT a suitable place for meeting someone you get to know through the Internet for the first time according to the text?

A. In his/her house. B. At the museum.

C. At McDonald’s. D. At the bookstore.

67. From this passage, we can infer that ________.

A. there are mostly homely and unemployed people online

B. the police had better find criminals online

C. we can find love only through the dating sites

D. following safety tips ensures a safe online dating experience

D

People with less education suffer fewer stressful days, according to a report in the current issue of the Journal of Health and Social Behavior.

However, the study also found that when less-educated people did suffer stress it was more severe and had a stronger effect on their health.

From this, researchers have concluded that the day-to-day factors that cause stress are regular. Where you are in society determines the kinds of problems that you have each day, and how well you will cope with them.

The research team interviewed a national sample of 1,031 adults daily for eight days about their stress level and health. People without a high school diploma(毕业文凭) reported stress on 30 percent of the study days, people with a high school degree reported stress 38 percent of the time, and people with college degrees reported stress 44 percent of the time.

‘‘Less advantaged people are less healthy on a daily basis and are more likely to have downward turns in their health.” leading researcher Dr. Joseph Grzywacz of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, said in a prepared statement. “The downward turns in health were connected with daily stressors(紧张刺激物), and the effect of daily stressors on their health is much more damaging for the less advantaged.”

Grzywacz suggested follow-up research to determine why less-educated people report fewer days of stress when it is known that their stress is more acute and chronic(急性和慢性).

“If something happens every day, maybe it’s not seen as a stressor” Grzywacz says. “Maybe it is just life.”

68. Stress level is closely related to ________.

A. family size B. social position

C. body weight D. work experience

69. Which group reported the biggest number of stressful days?

A. People without any education B. People without high school degrees

C. People with high school degrees D. People with college degrees

70. The less advantaged people are, the greater ________.

A. the effect of stress on their health is

B. the effect of education on their health is

C. the level of their education is

D. the degree of their health concern is

71. Less-educated people report fewer days of stress possibly because ________.

A. they don’t want to tell the truth

B. they don’t want to face the truth

C. stress is too common a factor in their life

D. their stress is more acute

Scientists say they were able to reduce the effect of the AIDS with a drug first designed to treat other conditions. AIDS damages the protection system so the body cannot fight viruses inside the body. At present, medicines can reduce HIV to levels low enough to keep people alive. But these drugs are not a cure. Small amounts of the virus still remain in human’s body. If it wakes up again, the virus can become active and begin to copy itself, so people must continue to take medicine.

A new study has been carried out on four patients. They had already taken medicine for more than two years. The researchers first improved the effect of the drug. Then in addition, they gave the patient another one, valproic acid(丙戊酸). Valproic acid is used to help epilepsy(癫痫病)patients. Some people with depression(抑郁症) also take the drug to calm themselves down.

But valproic acid has also been shown to block something that helps HIV, the AIDS virus, to hide. The patients took the medicine twice a day for three months.

Over this time, the researchers say the amount of the virus was reduced by nearly seventy-five percent in three of the four people. But the numbers returned to earlier levels when the treatment ended.

Valproic acid has some serious dangers, especially for women who will soon give birth. Doctor Margolis says more study is needed into its use against AIDS. But the scientists do say that their early finding suggests that new methods will produce a cure of HIV in the future. Some other scientists, however, say it is too early to talk of cure for a virus that is so difficult to destroy. They say a cure would have to make the patients healthy again and the virus might not hide only in the protection system.

72. Which of the following is NOT a function of Valproic acid?

    A. To control the effects of epilepsy.

    B. To block something that helps HIV.

    C. To calm down people with depression.

    D. To improve the strength of other drugs.

73. By saying that “it is too early to talk of cure for a virus that is so difficult to destroy”, the author means_________.

A. Scientists hope to find the cure for AIDS soon

B. Scientist don’t want to talk about their cure too early

C. Scientists doubt a cure for AIDS can soon be found

D. It’s too late to find the cure for a virus that is so difficult to destroy

  Dear friends,

May I have your attention, please? Now I’d like to make a speech here.

Nowadays, some of us students have formed some bad habits on campus. For example,

But how to reduce the waste? In my opinion,

Therefore, I’m sure, with everyone doing his bit, we will change the present situation.

That’s all. Thank you!

书面表达One Possible Version:

May I have your attention, please? Now I’d like to make a speech here.

Nowadays, some of us students have formed some bad habits on campus. For example, some students leave the lights on in the daytime, or let water running after washing. Some leave over much food on the table after eating. Besides, waste paper and spoiled books can be seen everywhere. So it is high time that we had to deal with the problems.

As we all know, these bad habits will have a bad influence on our character and behavior. What’s worse, they can not only increase our cost at school and add financial burden to our parents, but also waste the limited resources.

But how to reduce the waste? In my opinion, we should start with ourselves to save everything. Here, I'd like to remind my friends to take the lead in reducing the waste.

Therefore, I’m sure, with everyone doing his bit, we will change the present situation.

That’s all. Thank you!

M: Lost his voice. Oh, what a shame! Is there anything I can do for him?

W: Well, he has a class this afternoon from two thirty to four and he won’t be able to teach it, but he doesn’t want to cancel it either.

M: Want me to try to find somebody else to teach the class?

W: No, not exactly. What he wants to do is get someone to go in for him, just to pass back the mid-term exams. He’s already marked them and they are on the desk in his office. The whole thing wouldn’t take more than ten minutes.

M: His classes are two thirty, eh? Well, I’m afraid at that time I am going to be on campus anyway, so I could do it for him. What room is his class in?

W: Calder Hall, room two fourteen. Will you need his office key to get the exams? He’s given it to me and I could bring it to you.

M: Actually, that won’t be necessary. We have a master key in the math department. So I can get into his office.

W: Thank you very much, Prof. Webster. Don doesn’t have another class to teach until Thursday, and hopefully he will be able to talk by then. He’ll call you as soon as he can. Oh, yes, I almost forgot. Could you put the next assignment on the board, too? It’s all the problems on page forty-five, and they are due at the next class.

M: Well, I didn’t intend to buy a lot. But I’m having some people over and I guess I needed more than I expected.

W: What’s the occasion?

M: Now the people I live with, the Kremers, have been on vacation for a month and I guess I thought I’d surprise them. I’m inviting some of their friends and families for a welcome dinner.

W: Oh, that’s really thoughtful of you.

M: I find it’s the least I can do for them. They’ve been letting me stay with them rent-free while I’m in school.

W: Really? That’s kind of them.

M: Well, they understand how difficult it is when you’re student. They’ve been such a big help to me. I thought that this might be a small way to thank them for their kindness.
