In 1997,a group of twenty British women made history.Working in five teams with four women in each team, they walked to the North Pole.Apart from one experienced female guide, the other women were all ordinary people who had never done anything like this in their lives before. They managed to survive in an environment which had defeated several very experienced men during the same time period.
Once on the ice, each woman had to ski along while dragging a sledge(雪橇)weighing over 50 kilos. The Arctic ice is pushed up into huge piles two or three meters high, and the sledges had to be pulled up one side and carefully let down the other all on rough surface so that they didn’t become damaged. The temperature was always below the freezing point and sometimes strong winds made walking while pulling so much weight almost impossible. It was also very difficult for them to put up their tents when they stopped each night.
In such conditions, the women were making good progress if they covered fourteen or fifteen kilometers fl day. However, part of the journey was across a frozen sea with moving water underneath the ice and at some points the team would drift(漂流)back more than five kilometers during the night. That meant that after walking in these very severe conditions for ten hours on one day, they had to spend part of the next day covering the same ground again.
So,how did they manage to succeed? They realized that they were part of a team.If any one of them didn't pull her sledge or get her job done, she would endanger the Success of the whole expedition.Any form of selfishness could result in the efforts of everyone else being completely wasted,so personal feelings had to be put to one side.At the end of their journey, the women agreed that it was mental effort far more than physical fitness that got them to the North Pole.
48.The expedition was extraordinary because____________.

B.the women did not have any men with them
C.it was a new experience for most of the women
D.the women had not met one another before

Giving gifts is not a normal part of British business culture.Indeed,British business colleagues are quite likely to feel uncomfortable to receive any gift at a11.The only exception would be at the conclusion of a deal when it might be settable to give a unique memorial item to mark the event.Such items might be gold, silver, or porcelain with a suitable inscription(题字)。Again,to avoid discomfort, the object must be simple, tasteful, and not extremely expensive.
Small gifts such as a pen or a book would be suitable gifts of true thanks, and flowers or wine are enough to thank junior colleagues for their services.Do not, however, appear proud or improperly eager, especially if the recipient is a woman.
Business gifts are never exchanged at Christmas but it may be appropriate to send a card, particularly as an expression of thanks to your business friends but also as a means of keeping valuable links.Bear in mind that the UK postal service was founded at about the same time as the old railways so make sure that your cards are mailed in good time.
If you are invited to a British home,it is standard practice to bring wine,flowers,and/or
chocolates for your hosts. The usual European rules should be followed when you give flowers:no red roses, white lilies or chrysanthemums.
If you know that you are going to stay with a family,it is a good idea to bring something from your own country.Your hosts are letting you into the secret of their home,so a picture book about your area or some handicraft articles would be proper gifts to lead your hosts into some of the secrets of your own home.If you are unprepared, then your time in your hosts’ house should allow you to think of something they would really appreciate even if you have to mail it from home on your return.
52.The suitable time to give gifts in business in the UK might be_____.
A.before a business deal is done B.after a business deal is completed
C.any time if the gifts are proper D.while a business deal is going on
53.We call follow all the below rules when sending gifts except that__________.
A.business gifts mustn’t be given at Christmas
B.business gifts should be simple and not very expensive
C.you should tell your secrets to the family hosting you
D.not all flowers are suitable for gifts
54.The underlined word“it”in the last paragraph refers to________.
A.a picture book which tells about your family
B.your secret which makes your hosts know you better
C.a handicraft article about your country’s culture
D.any object your hosts may appreciate
55.The best title of this passage might be____________.
A.Gift Giving in the UK B.How to Visit a British Family
C.Business Activities in Britain D.Girls people dislike in the UK

In recent years many countries of the world have been faced with the problem of how to make their workers more productive. Some experts claim the answer is to make jobs more varied(多样化).But do more varied jobs lead to greater productivity(生产力)?There is evidence to suggest that while variety certainly makes the workers’ life more enjoyable,it does not actually make him work harder. As far as increasing productivity is concerned, the variety is not an important factor.
Other experts feel that giving the worker freedom to do his job in his own way is important and there is no doubt that this is true. The problem is that this kind of freedom cannot easily be given in the modern factory with its complicated(复杂的)machinery which must be used in a fixed way. Thus while freedom of choice may be important, there is usually very lisle that Can be done to create it.
Another important consideration is how much each worker contributes to the product he is making. In most factories the worker sees only one small part of the product. Some car factories are now experimenting with having many small production lines rather than one large one,so that each worker contributes more to the production of the cars on his line.It would seem that not only is the degree of workers’ contribution an important factor, therefore, but it is also one we can do something about.
To what extent more money led to greater productivity? The workers themselves certainly think this is important. But perhaps they want more money only because the work they do is so boring.Money just lets them enjoy their spare time more.A similar argument may explain demands for shorter working hours.Perhaps if we succeed in making their jobs more interesting, they will neither want more money, nor will shorter working hours be so important to them.
56._________will surely lead to no increase in productivity.
A.To make jobs more varied
B.To let the worker do his job in his own way
C.To increase degree of work contribution
D.To demand longer working hours
57.The workers want more money__________.
A.because their jobs are too boring B.in order to enjoy more spare time
C.to make their jobs more interesting D.to demand shorter working hours
58.If we manage to make workers’ jobs more interesting,_________.
A.they will want to work with smaller production lines
B.they will demand more freedom of choice in their Work
C.they will want to work with complicated machinery
D.they are less likely to demand more money and shorter working hours
59.In this passage, the author mainly talks about
A.how to make the workers contribute more
B.possible ways leading to greater productivity

The mid-autumn Festival
The Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional festival with a long history in China. It is very popular and is also celebrated in many other Asian countries.
The festival falls on the 15th day of August of the lunar calendar and is celebrated in different ways. It is a time to get together with family and friends . People usually gather together enjoying a large meal.
In the evening , people talk and eat moon cakes under the beautiful moon. For children, they prefer to listen to fairy tales about Change or Wugang while the family appreciate the sight of a bright full moon in the open air. The moon is a symbol of reunion, luck and wealth. It is also a custom to express best wishes to people they love at this particular time.
