The view over a valley of a tiny village with thatched roof (roof covering of straw ) cottages around a church; a drive through a narrow village street lined with thatched cottages painted pink or white ;the sight over the rolling hills of thatched farm buildings—these are still common sights in parts of England .Most people will agree that the thatched roof is an essential part of the attraction of the English countryside.

Thatching is in fact the oldest of all the building crafts (jobs needing skill with one’s hand)practiced in the British Isles. Although thatch has always been used for cottages and farm buildings, it was once used for castles and churches ,too.

Thatching is a solitary (alone without companions)craft ,which often runs in families. The craft of thatching as it is practiced today has changed very little since the Middle Ages .Over 800 full-time thatchers are employed in England and Wales today, maintaining and renewing the old roofs as well as thatching newer houses .Many property owners choose thatch not only for its beauty but because they know it will keep them cool in summer and warm in winter.

In fact ,if we look at developing countries ,over half the world lives under thatch ,but they all do it in different ways .People in developing countries are often unwilling to go back to traditional materials and would prefer modern buildings .However ,they may lack the money to allow them to import the necessary materials .Their temporary (lasting only for a limited time) small mud house with thatched roofs of wild grasses often only last six months .Thatch which has been done in the British way lasts from twenty to sixty years ,and is an effective defense against the heat.

41.Which of the following remains a unique (being the only one of its type)feature of the English countryside?

A.Narrow streets lined with pink or white farm buildings.

B.Rolling hills with pretty farm buildings.

    C.Cottages with thatched roofs.

    D.Churches with cottages around them.

42.What do we know about thatching as a craft?

    A.It is a collective activity.

B.It is in most cases handed down among family members.

C.It is quite different from what it used to be.

D.It is practiced on farms all over England.

43.People in developed countries also live under thatch because_______ .

A.thatched cottages are a big tourist attraction

B.thatched roof houses are the cheapest

C.thatch is an effective defense against the heat

D.thatched houses look better than other buildings

44.We can learn from the passage that_______ .

A.thatched cottages in England have been passed down from ancient times

B.thatching is the oldest building craft practiced by the English people

C.the English people have a special liking for thatched houses

D.most thatched cottages in England are located on hillsides

A terrifying example of the sea's power saw 125,000 people die in 12 different countries last week. The devastation (毁坏) was caused when a massive earthquake sent tsunamis smashing into Indian Ocean coastlines.

Communities in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, India, Malaysia and East Africa have been destroyed by the monster waves. Whole towns were simply swept aside by the power of the water. Cars, trains and buildings could not survive, let alone the people who stood in the way.

The earthquake measured 9.0 on the Richter scale (里氏震级) and occurred off the coast of Indonesia. It was recorded as the fifth strongest since 1900.

Scientists said the quake was as powerful as a million of the atomic bombs that were dropped on Japan during World War II. "This may be the worst natural disaster in recent history because it is affecting so many heavily populated coastal areas," said Jan Egeland, a UN official.

Because such waves rarely happen in the Indian Ocean, there is no system in place to warn coastal communities they are about to be hit.

Tsunami is Japanese for "harbour wave." They are usually caused by a sudden rise or fall of part of the Earth's crust under the ocean. Normally a tsunami includes a series of waves.

Tsunamis can be very long – as much as 100 kilometres  – and be as far as one hour apart. They are able to cross entire oceans without losing much energy. One of the most striking facts about tsunamis is that an earthquake on one side of the Pacific Ocean can cause giant waves and destruction on the other side.

When the ocean is deep, tsunamis can travel unnoticed at speeds of up to 800 kilometres per hour. They can cross the entire ocean in a day or less.

The wave may only be a few metres high in the ocean but when it is near the shore and reaches shallow  water, the wave builds up very quickly in height. Witnesses in some areas of Indonesia reported seeing up to 10-metre high waves crash into the shore.

"Tsunamis travel outward in all directions from the centre of an earthquake and attack coastlines," said Wong Wing-Tak, senior scientific officer at the Hong Kong Observatory (气象台). "They can easily suck people out to sea, cause flooding and destroy property."

45.Why does the writer use monster in the second paragraph?

A. Because the waves look like some monster.

B. Because the waves are large and frightening

C. Because the size of the waves are like a monster.

D. Because the waves have the same colour as a monster.

46. Why may it be the worst natural disaster in recent history?

A. Because many heavily populated coastal areas are suffering from the tsunamis.

B. Because up to 10-metre high waves crashed into shore in Indonesia.

C. Because it rarely happens in the Indian Ocean.

D. Because it happens after an earthquake.

47.From the text we can infer that Tsunamis often occur ______.

A. in oceans B. on land    C. in rivers D. in moutains

48.Which of the following is Not true according to the passage?

A. A sudden rise or fall of part of the Earth’s crust under the ocean can cause Tsunamis.

B. Tsunamis travel outward in all directions from the center of an earthquake.

C. Tsunamis will die out near the shore or in shallow waters.

D. Tsunamis can affect the whole area around the sea.

Want a glance of the future of health care? Take a look at the way the various networks of people about patient care are being connected to one another, and how this new connectivity is being exploited to deliver medicine to the patient - no matter where he or she may be.

Online doctors offering advice based on normal symptoms are the most obvious example. Increasingly, however, remote diagnosis(远程诊断)will be based on real physiological data from the actual patient. A group from the University of Kentucky has shown that by using personal data assistance plus a mobile phone ,it is perfectly practical to send a patient’s important signs over the telephone. With this kind of equipment, the cry asking whether there was a doctor in the house could well be a thing of the past.

Other medical technology groups are working on applying telemedicine to rural care. And at least one team wants to use telemedicine as a tool for disaster need - especially after earthquakes. On the whole, the trend is towards providing global access to medical data and experts’ opinions.

But there is one problem. Bandwidth(宽带) is the limiting factor for sending complex medical pictures around the world,—CU photos being one of the biggest bandwidth users. Communication satellites can be able to deal with the short - term needs during disasters such as earthquakes or wars. But medicine is looking towards both the second - generation Internet and third generation mobile phones for the future of remote medical service.

Doctors have met to discuss computer - based tools for medical diagnosis, training and telemedicine. With the falling price of broadband communications, the new technologies should start a new time when telemedicine and the sharing of medical information, experts’ opinions and diagnosis are common.

  53.The writer chiefly talks about ________ .

  A. the use of telemedicine B. the on -lined doctors

  C. medical care and treatment D. communication improvement

54.Which of the following statements is true according to the text?

  A. Patients don’t need doctors in hospitals any more.

  B. It is impossible to send a patient’s signs over the telephone.

  C. Many teams use telemedicine dealing with disasters now.

  D. Broadband communications will become cheaper in the future.

55.The“problem”in the fourth paragraph refers to the fact that ________ .

  A. bandwidth isn’t big enough to send complex medical pictures

  B. the second - generation of Internet has not become popular yet

  C. communication satellites can only deal with short - term needs

  D. there is not enough equipment for spreading the medical care

So long as teachers fail to distinguish between teaching and learning , they will continue to undertake to do for children the things which only children can do for themselves. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that“ reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible”.

Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to devise the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also public activity. It can be seen and observed.

Learning to read involves all that each individual does to make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private ,for learning is an occupation of the mind ,and that process is not open to public scrutiny.

If teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable ,what then can be done through teaching that will aid the child in the quest(探索)for knowledge? Smith has one principal rule for all teaching instructions. “Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children. ”

When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, and when both teacher fulfil them appropriately, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of leaning to read by reading.

56.The problem with the reading course as mentioned in the first paragraph is that ________.

  A. it is one of the most difficult school courses

  B. students spend endless hours in reading

  C. reading tasks are assigned with little guidance

  D. too much time is spent in teaching about reading

57.The teaching of reading will be successful if ________.

  A. teachers can improve conditions at school for the students

  B. teachers can enable students to develop their own way of reading

  C. teachers can devise the most effcient system for reading

  D. teachers can make their teaching activities observable

58.The underlined word“ scrutiny” most probably means“________”.

  A. inquiry B. observation C. control D. suspicion

59.According to the passage, learning to read will no longer be a difficult task when ________.

  A. children become highly motivated

  B. teacher and learner roles are interchangeable

  C. teaching helps children in the search for knowledge

  D. reading enriches children’s experience

60.The main idea of the passage is that ________.

  A. teachers should do as little as possible in helping students learn to read

  B. teachers should encourage students to read as widely as possible

  C. reading ability is something acquired rather than taught

  D. reading is more complicated that generally believed

Is a Training Class or a Private Teacher Necessary?

More and more middle school students are going to all kinds of training classes or having private teachers at the weekend . There are two different view points about it .

Some think it necessary . First of all ,it’s more effective to study with a teacher than by themselves .Secondly ,it can strengthen what is learnt in class .Besides ,they can learn a lot more .Others think it unnecessary .For one thing ,students can easily form the habit of dependence ,and for another ,students need time to relax .What’s more ,the purpose of many training classes and private teachers is to make money.

In my opinion ,whether a training class or a private teacher is needed just depends .If you are really very weak at or interested in a certain subject ,maybe it’s OK for you . But be sure to choose a good and suitable class or teacher .Otherwise it would be a waste of time and money.
