People often say,“Children can't do maths problems. It's because parents can't do their children's homework.”Here's an example to show what I mean.

The other day my daughter brought home her maths homework,“I have to subtract (减)179 from 202”, she said.

  “It's quite easy," 1 said."You put the 202 over the 179.”

  “But we need a 10 here.Where is the 10?”

“I don't know where the 10 is.Let's just subtract 179 from 202.Nine from two is three. You carry one and add it to seven.Eight from zero is two.The answer is 23.”

“We can't do it that way.We have to use the 10.”

“Well, I’m going to call your teacher to see how she subtracts 179 from 202.”

Over the telephone, I said that I was having a bit of trouble with the homework she had given to my daughter, the teacher said, “In the right —hand column we have units of one.The two in that column counts for two ones. The zero in the centre counts for zero tens. The two in the left —hand column counts for hundreds. Are you clear?” But I didn't think it was clear.

I hung up and found my way to the medicine box.My head was now hurting.I started

The desire to make explorations is born with man.

Wherever his imagination goes, man also has a strong wish to go.A large part of human history is connected with the exploration of the world in which we live.Again and again people have set out with surprising courage and patience to look into unknown regions and lands to see what had not yet been seen, to make known the unknown. With kites, balloons and aircraft they left the ground to pass through the lower atmosphere. Now the outer space receives their attention.

Why should man take the trouble of conquering space? It is hard to list the specific practical benefits that will result in.But one knows, from past experience in other areas, that man will surely see and discover new things in space that will increase our scientific knowledge, and this new knowledge will find its way into valuable practical uses. What we learn about man himself, from his experience in space, and from the effects of space and the space flight environment on him, will be extremely valuable. The new techniques developed to carry out the exploration of space, and to keep man alive in space, will certainly find practical uses in everyday life in some way.The areas that will benefit are manifold. They include communication, generation of power, transportation and travel, food production, materials, fuels and many others. But to say definitely just what the practical results will be is almost impossible.

For an increasing number of students at American universities, Old is suddenly in.The reason is obvious: the graying of America means jobs.Coupled with the aging of the baby-boom(生育高峰)generation, a longer life span means that the nation's elderly population will expand greatly over the next 50 years.By 2050,25 percent of all Americans will be older than 65,up from 14 percent in 1995.The change sets questions for government and society, of course. But it also creates career opportunities in medicine and health professions, and in law and business as well.“In addition to the doctors, we're going to need more sociologists, biologists, urban planners and specialized lawyers,” says Professor Edward Schneider of the University of Southern California's (USC) School of Gerontology(老年学).

Lawyers can specialize in“elder law”, which covers everything from trusts and estates to nursing-home abuse(虐待) and age discrimination(歧视).Businessmen see huge opportunities in the elder market because the baby boomers,74 million strong, are likely to be the wealthiest group of retirees in human history.“Any students who combines an expert knowledge in gerontology with, say, an MBA or law degree will have a license to print money, ”one professor says.

Margarite Santos is a 21-year-old senior at USC.She began college as a biology major but found she was “really bored with bacteria.” So she took a class in gerontology and discovered that she liked it.She says,“I did volunteer work in retirement homes and it was very satisfying.”

Plants, like animals, are subject to diseases of various kinds. It has been estimated that some 30,000 different diseases attack our economic plants; forty are known to attack corn, and about as many attack wheat. The results of unchecked plant disease are all too obvious in countries which have marginal food supplies. The problem will soon be more widespread as the population of the world increases at its frightening rate.Even in countries which are now amply fed by their agricultural products there could soon be the major crops; the resulting famines(饥荒) could kill millions of people, and the resulting hardship on other millions could cause political upheavals(动乱) disastrous to the order of the world.

Plant pathologists have made remarkable strides in identifying the pathogens of the various diseases.Bacteria may invade a plant through an infestation of insect parasites carrying the pathogen.A plant can also be inoculated by man.Other diseases might be caused by fungus which attacks the plant in the form of a model or smut or rust.Frequently such a primary infection will weaken the plant so that a secondary infection may result form its lack of tolerance. The symptoms(症状) shown may cause an error in diagnosis, so that treatment may be directed toward bacteria(细菌) which could be the result of a susceptibility caused by a primary virus infection.

1.D 2.A 3.B 4.C 5.A

6.A  when taken by the government表示“当被政府采取的时候”,when有时带有假设的意味。

12.B  sb./sth.be said to do sth.

13.A position“状态、状况、情势”。

当前用了复数形式,后常有介词of,即dozens of(类似的还有scores of等)。 如:two dozen of my books.

19.A. John plays football as wall as David if not better than David.

22。A  从下文的“Well,I just don’t have the work relative to 38(physics).I should give up on it…”

24.B  instead在这里相当于instead of getting a job as a physics professor。

25.A  C项有一定干扰性,while employed等于while he was employed。

26.A  the inventions指Einstein的两项理论的发明。

注意本句的结构:supporting yourself by waiting tables为状语,think yourself as an artist...and paint,or draw为句子的主要部分,and前后的动词为顺接,因此A项为最佳选项。

整个第二段以“working as an artist,while

supporting yourself by waiting tables”为例说明作者开头所提出的“Begin doing the work you love as soon as possible’ even if you don’t get paid for it,or if you can only work at it part-time。”

While seeking the work you love是时间状语从句,you love即that you love,作定语修饰work,因此it helps to…

Having opened  52 (a11)the possibilities, you can make a final 53 (decision)and select the work you love as your own.”

37.B  从空后的you can make a final 53 (decision)得此答案。

40.B  从后文我们得知the imaginative指big dreams’而the practical指all the little details。

43.A   第五段最后一句“Schools as well as society have much to do”说明了这一点。

Again and again people have set out with surprising courage and patience to look into unknown regions and lands to see what had not yet been seen, to make known the unknown可知。

从第二自然段 the new techniques developed to carry out the exploration of space, and to keep man alive in space, will certainly find practical uses in everyday life in some way可知the areas that will benefit是广泛的,多种多样的;文章下一句说明了将获利的各种领域,故选B。

61.G 62.E 63.D 64.B 65.C

66.Spread 67.permitted 68.normal 69.disturb 70 coat 71.communicate

72 fresh 73 homeless. 74 jealous 75 eager/anxious.

In the picture we can see a man standing at a crossroad with two similar roads, and trying to decide which way to take.In daily life we are often faced with such choices. This is a situation that every person must face.More often than not, we have to make difficult decisions independently. This moment is very important for everyone to go through.

In order to make a decision that we will not regret, we should bear these two principles in mind: thinking before acting, and never missing any opportunities that arise. On one hand, we should have an objective judgment about ourselves while maintaining a clear idea about the world around us .On the other hand, we should also think about opportunity. Many people may not quite agree with this and think that opportunity is so rare that only the luckiest people come across it.However, opportunity is open to everyone and one should make good use of it when facing with it .One should take advantage of it just like the proverb states:“Opportunities are only from the prepared minds.”

So when one is faced with choices the next time, remember that using the mind and taking advantage of good opportunities will pave the way to success.
