Most of us are used to seasons. Each year, spring follows winter, which follows autumn, which follows summer, which follows spring. And winter is colder than summer. But the earth goes through temperature cycles over much longer periods than those that we experience.Between 65,000 and 35,000 years, the planet was much colder than it is now.During that time the temperature also changed a lot, with periods of warming and cooling.Ice melted during the warm periods, which made sea levels rise.Water froze again during the cold periods.

A new study from Switzerland, sheds light on (使某事清楚明白地显示出来) where ice sheets (冰川) inched during the ice age.It now seems that the ice melted at both ends of the earth, rather than just in either northern or southern regions (区域).

This surprised the researchers from the University of Bern (伯恩大学).Scientists have long assumed (假设) that most of the ice that melted was in the Northern hemisphere (半球) during the 30,000-year long ice age. That belief was held because the North Pole is surrounded by land, while the South Pole is surrounded by the Antarctic Ocean. It is easier for ice sheets to grow on land.If surrounded by sea the ice can easily just slip into the ocean instead of building up.

The researchers used a computer model to look at ways the ice could melt and how it might affect sea levels. They compared these results to evidence (证据) of how temperatures and currents actually changed during that time. The model showed that if it was only in the Northern hemisphere that ice melted, there would have been a bigger impact (影响) on ocean currents (洋流) and sea temperatures than what actually happened.Studies suggest that melting just in the Southern hemisphere would have been impossible, too.The only reasonable conclusion, the scientists could make, was that ice melted equally in the North and the South.

It is still a mystery (神秘的事物) as to what caused the temperature changes that caused the ice to melt.

59.The North Pole is surrounded by land, while the South Pole is surrounded by the Antarctic Ocean. So scientists thought that __________.

A.most of the ice melted in the Northern hemisphere

B.most of the ice melted in the Southern hemisphere

C.The North Pole is colder than South Pole

D.The South Pole is colder than North Pole

60.We can infer from the passage _________.

A.the ice can easily just slip into the ocean

B.volcanoes caused the ice to melt

C.melting just in the Northern hemisphere would have been impossible

D.researchers often use the computer models to help their research work

61.The scientists are not sure ________.

A.how long the ice age lasted      B.where ice sheets melted during the ice age.

C.what caused the temperature changes D.what the earth is made up of

62.Which of the following is the best title?

  A.A computer model.

B.Studies show ice melted equally in the North and the South during the ice age.

C.Most of the ice melted in the Northern hemisphere (半球) during the 30,000-year long ice age.

  D.A survey result.

    Glynis Davis :

I first piled on the pounds when I was in the family, way and I couldn't lose them afterwards. Then I joined a slimming club.My target was 140 pounds and I lost 30 pounds in six months .I felt great and people kept saying how good I looked. But Christmas came and I started to slip back into my old eating habits.I told myself I' d lose the weight at slimming classes in the new year...but it didn't happen.Instead of losing the pounds, I put them on.I' d lost willpower and tried to believe that the old bag of fish and chips didn't make any difference — but the scales don' t lie.

    Roz Juma:

To be honest, I never weigh myself any more.I've learnt to be happy with myself. It seemed to me that I would feel sorry about every spoonful of tasty food that passed my lips.My idea is simple. You shouldn't be too much thinking about food and dieting.Instead, you should get on with life and stop dreaming of a super-thin body. This is obviously the size I' m meant to be and, most of all, I' m happy with it.

    Lesley Codwin:

I was very happy at winning Young Slimmer of the year.I'd look in the mirror unable to believe this slim lady was me! That might have been my problem — perhaps from then on I didn't pay any attention to myself.Winning a national competition makes everything worse, though, because you feel the eyes of the world are fixed upon you.I feel a complete failure because I've put on weight again.

    Ros Langfod:

Before moving in with my husband Gavin, I'd always been about 110 pounds, but the pleasant housework went straight to my waist and I put on 15 pounds in a year.Every so often I try to go on a diet...I'm really good on a few days, then end up having the children' s leftovers or eating happily chocolate — my weakness.I' d like to be slim, but right now my duty is the children and home.I might take more exercise when my kids are older.

Moon landing. The computer chip.Genetic engineering. The artificial heart. The achievements of US scientists are known and admired throughout the world. But whether American highest position in research and technology will continue into the 21st century is far from

certain.32 years after the Russians sent up Sputnik setting off a hot race to produce more and better US physicists, the scientific pipeline is drying up.The reason for this crisis (危机):American science education is in disorder.

In an Educational Testing Service study of five countries and four Canadian provinces, American 13-year-olds graded last in maths and nearly last in science.

How did America, birthplace of Thomas Edison and Wright brothers , come to such a dangerous situation? One reason is lack of enough financial support for science education. After Sputnik, funding (基金) for the National Science Foundation, the leading US founder of scientific research, shot up from $ 18 million to $ 130 million.By 1982 financing for NSF'S education had fallen rapidly to zero.

To be sure, changeable funding is only one reason why US scientists are becoming a scarce commodity (稀有商品).The image of scientists is less lustrous than it was in the '50s and'60s, when men and women in lab coats were seen as national heroes.Today, the country 's brightest desire is to be bankers and lawyers, not chemists and rocket designers.

67.America is losing its highest position in research and technology because _________.

A.American students are flowing to Canada

B.the scientific pipeline is drying up

C.Thomas Edison and Wright brothers had died

D.the lack of financial support and lower social position of scientists

68.From the passage, we can know that the computer chip, genetic engineering are ________.

  A.examples of American scientific achievements

  B.names of modern technology

  C.seen everywhere throughout the world

D.obtained by Russia

69.The underlined word “lustrous”(Line 2, Paragraph 4) in the last paragraph can be replaced by _________.

  A.important B.shining C.smart D.shocking

70.The main idea of the passage is that _________.

A.America's leading position in scientific research is in danger

B.America needs more funding in scientific research

C.The National Science Foundation needs financial support

D.American students are not fond of science

Without most people realizing it, there has been a revolution in office work over the last ten years. Before that time, large computers were only, used by large, rich companies that could afford the investment. With the advancement of technology, small computers have come onto the market, which are capable of doing the work which used to be done by much larger and expensive computers, so now most smaller companies can use them

The main development in small computers has been in the field of word processors (处理器) , or WPS as they are often called.40% of British offices are now estimated to have a word processor and this percentage is growing fast.

There are many advantages in using a word processor for both secretary and manager. The secretary is freed from a lot of daily work, such as re-typing letters and storing papers. He or she can use this time to do other more interesting work for the boss. From a manager's point of view, secretarial time is being made better use of and money can be saved by doing daily jobs automatically outside office hors.

But is it all good? If a lot of daily secretarial work can be done automatically, surely this will mean that fewer secretaries will be needed.Another worry is the increasing medical problems related to work with visual display units (显示器).The case of a slow loss of sight among people using word processors seems to have risen greatly. It is also feared that if a woman works at a VDU for long hours, the unborn child in her body might be killed.Safety screens to put over a VDU have been invented but few companies in England bother to buy them.

Whatever the arguments for and against word processor, they are a key feature (特征) of this revolution in office practice.

71.Then years ago, smaller companies did not use large computers because_________.

A.these companies had not enough money to buy such expensive computers

B.these computers could not do the work that small computers can do today

C.these computers did not come onto the market

D.these companies did not need to use this new technology

72.According to the writer, the main feature of the revolution in office work

over the last ten years is __________.

A.the saving of time and money B.the use of computers in small companies

C.the wide use of word processors D.the decreasing number of secretaries

73.It is implied but not directly stated in the passage that with the use of word

  processors _________.

A.some secretaries will lose their jobs

B.daily jobs can be done automatically outside office hours

C.medical problems related to work with a VDU have increased

D.the British companies will make less money

74.Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A.There are both advantages and disadvantages in using a word processor

B.The British companies care much for the health of the people using word processors.

C.The technology in the field of computers has been greatly advanced over the last ten years.

D.Using word processors , secretaries can get more time to do more interesting work for their bosses.

75.It can be concluded from the passage that ________.

A.safety screens are of poor quality

B.working at a VDU for a long time is good for one's health

C.more and more British offices will use word processors

D.British companies will need fewer and fewer manages

One possible version:

A parents meeting is a good way to communicate between the school, teachers and students. It means to improve the study of students, but different students have different opinions about it.

Some are for it, some are against it and others don't care about it.

My opinion is that parents meetings are of great value, because the parents are able to know more about their children; in addition, students can also follow the teachers' instructions better.

So my parents and I take great delight to take part in it, and usually we talk a lot about it.

听第8段材料,回答第12-14题

Many people say that Linda is my girl friend, but I don’t see it that way.I think they don’t quite understand us.True, we are often together, but both of us see each other as just a good friend. At the same time, each of us has a lot of other friends and gets on with them quite well.I know why people say we are lovers, as we have been together for a long time, since the primary school days. But I don’t think there’s anything special about it.We are neighbors and our parents are good friends. The two families visit each other and go picnicking or traveling together quite often and go to each other’s parties. So I see quite a lot of Linda.I think it’s just natural that we have become good friends. We play together, read the same books and share our ideas and tell each other when we are happy or sad.I think that’s why people have the idea that we are lovers.

听第9段材料,回答第15-17题

This is a story about cleverness.Once a time, there was a poor old man who lived happily with his beautiful daughter.Unfortunately, the old man fell ill one year and had to borrow a lot of money from his neighbor to see the doctor.

Now this neighbor was a very bad man.As soon as the old man became well, he forced him to return the money. How could the poor old man return so much money in such a short time? So the neighbor said, “You don’t have to pay me back if you marry your daughter to me.”

The old man did not agree. Then the neighbor said, “Let’s play a guessing game then.I have two pieces of paper here, one with the word ‘YES’ on it while the other with ‘NO’ on it.Let your daughter pick one piece from my hand.If it says ‘YES’ she has to marry me; if says ‘NO’ she doesn’t have to marry me.Either way you don’t have to pay me back, but if you don’t take this last chance I will send you to prison.”

The poor girl didn’t want her father to go to prison, so she agreed to take a chance. But the bad neighbor had written the same word on both pieces of paper.Which word? ‘YES’ of course. He thought no matter which piece of paper the girl picked, she would have to marry him.

Now the girl learnt about what her neighbor had dome, but she wasn’t angry at all.She pretended that she knew nothing about the bad man’s plan and picked one piece from his hand. And what did she do after that? She put the piece of paper into her mouth and ate it.

And I’m sure you are clever enough to guess the end of the story.

听第10段材料,回答第18-20题

W: What kind of film do you like most, Glen?

M: I like films about history.

 W: Are you serious?

M: Yes, I am.That’s why I like films about wars, as it’s part of history.

W: But you look like a lively boy who may like action films.

M: No, I don’t like action films.I think most of them are too cruel. All of them tell us one thing: the stronger you are, the more you will get.I don’t like this way of thinking.

W: How about love stories then? If you don’t like cruel ideas, you must like love stories then.

M: Love stories are OK for me, but not the best kind of film.

 W: Why not?

M: Few love stories are true. You just can’t believe them. And I like watching true stories.I think that’ the most important reason why I like films about history.

W: But films are not history, and the stories aren’t true, either.

M: I know, but they are nearest to facts. And usually, after watching a film about history, I would read some books about that history to make sure that I understand the true story.I don’t want to have a wrong understanding of facts.

W: Well, you are serious.
