How men first learnt to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we have really known is that men , unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions, and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds , and which could be written down. These sounds, whether spoken or written bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases. Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar(粗俗)

Work on “Game Theory ” Wins Nobel
Prize for Two Economists
American Thomas Schelling and Israeli-American Robert Aumann will share the 2005 Nobel Prize in economics. Both men have greatly influenced the way conflict and business negotiations(谈判) are carried out.
The two men are being honored for their work in developing an economic idea. It is called game theory.
Game theory began as the study of decision—making in competitive situations, like games. John von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern linked the theory of games with economic activities more than sixty years ago.
In the nineteen fifties, John Nash developed an idea known as the Nash equilibrium(平衡). The Nash equilibrium is the point where all sides in a competitive situation believe they have been given the best offer they will ever get. He proved this with mathematical methods.
Mr Nash won the Nobel Prize in economics with two other men in nineteen ninety-four.
Mr Schelling used the idea of game theory to study real-life problems, such as the arms competition between the United States and the Soviet Union forty years ago. He was interested in what influenced negotiating groups. He showed how one side might decide to harm its interests for a short period of time to make gains over a longer period. Mr Schelling also used game theory to show how people become divided by race. He found that divided societies can result even among persons mostly willing to live near people of another race.
Mr Aumann developed game theory mathematically so that it can be useful for different areas of study. He showed that peaceful cooperation can provide good results for all competitors in a game over a long period. This is true even among competitors with a temporary conflict of interest. Mr Aumann also considered how reasonable decisions are made among groups. He showed that knowing what competitors know is important to decision—making.
The work of both men has influenced areas of study other than economics. International negotiators, military planners, business leaders and biologists use methods developed by Mr Schelling and Mr Aumann.
Mr Schelling , an American, is a retired professor of the University of Maryland. Mr Aumann is a citizen of both the Untied States and Israel. He is a retired professor of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

A.don’t have to be informed what our competitors think
B.must have a good understanding of what our competitors know
C.need only think about how we can make the most of our own interests
D.needn’t peacefully cooperate with our competitors to make a profit

Research indicates(表明) that parents who reward self-control and independence tend to have children with high achievement motivation. Such parents set high standards for their children but allow them to work at their own level and to make their own mistakes. By contrast , parents of low need achievers typically set impossibly high goals for their children and make extreme demands. In addition, parents of high need achievers encourage good performance but do not berate(责骂) their children when they fail. If a child comes home from school with four A’s and B on a report card, the parents focus on the A’s; parents of a potential low need achiever tend to ask, “Why the B” Parents of high need achievers respond to mediocre(中等的)grades with warmth and suggestions for reasonable goals and ways to reach them. Parents of low need achievers might say, “You’re dumb and lazy; you’ll never amount to anything,” and punish the child. When a child is having trouble with a math problem, the parent of a potentially high need achiever will suggest the general procedure and let the child work out the particular solution; a low need achiever’s parent will solve the problem and then hand the child the answer.
The needs for affiliation(从属关系)and achivement exist within all of us, to varying degrees, is undeniable. And although biological bases for at least the affiliation need have been proposed, a great deal more is known about the psychological (心理学的)bases of these needs and how they come about.
Closely related to motivation are emotions, which can activate(起动、激发)and direct behavior in much the same way as physiological, social, and psychological motivations do.

B.set very high standards for their children

A.criticize(批评)him for the lower marks and praise him for the good
B.praise him for the good marks and give some suggestions for further improvement C.praise him for the good marks and reward him
D.criticize him for the lower marks and punish him
57.The passage is mainly about the role of .
A.reward in promoting their children’s study
B.self-control and independence in child growth
C.emotional reaction in promoting achievement
D.praise in promoting desired behavior

Drunken driving—sometimes called America’s social accepted form of murder –has become a national epidemic (传染病). Every hour of every day about three Americans on average are killed by drunken drivers, adding up to an incredible 250,000over the past decade.
A drunken driver is usually defined as one with a 0.10 blood content or roughly three beers, glasses of wine or shots of whisky drunk within two hours, Heavy drinking used to be an acceptable part of the American man image and judges were tolerant (宽容的)in most courts, but the drunken slaughter(残杀)has recently caused so many well-publicized tragedies, especially involving young children, that public opinion is no longer so tolerant.
Twenty states have raised the legal drinking age to 21, reversing a trend in the 1960s to reduce it to 18. After New Jersey lowered it to 18, the number of people killed by 18 to 20-year-old drivers was more than doubled, so the state recently upped it back to 21.
Reformers , however, fear raising the drinking age will have little effect unless accompanied by educational programs to help young people to develop “responsible attitudes” about drinking and teach them to resist peer(同伴)pressure to drink.
Tough new laws have led to increased arrest and tests and , in many areas already , to a marked decline in fatalities(灾祸).Some states are also penalizing (处罚)bars for serving customers too many drinks. A tavern in Massachusetts was fined for serving six or more double brandies to a customer who was “obviously intoxicated (喝醉的)”and later drove off the road, killing a nine-year-old boy.
As the fatalities continue to occur daily in every state, some Americans are even beginning to speak well of the 13 years of national prohibition(禁止)of alcohol that began in 1919, what President Hoover called the “noble experiment”. They forget that legal prohibition didn’t stop drinking ,but encouraged political corruption(腐败)and organized crime. As with the booming drug trade generally, there is no easy solution.
58.Drunken driving has become a major problem in America because .
A.most Americans are heavy drinkers
B.Americans are now less shocked by road accidents
C.accidents attract too much publicity
D.drinking is a socially accepted habit in America
59.Public opinion regarding drunken driving has changed because .
A.detailed statistics are now available
B.the news media have brought the problem to everybody’s attention
C.judges are given more severe sentences
D.drivers are more conscious of (清楚)their image
60.The problem of drunken driving is difficult to solve because .
A.alcohol is easily accessible
B.drinking is linked to organized crime
C.legal prohibiting has already failed
D.legislation(立法)alone is not sufficient (充分的)

书面表达:
Dear friends,
Here are my points. We students today have to pay much attention to our lessons but know little of society though it’s not our fault. A holiday is the best time to make up for that. Taking a part-time job is a good form of social practice. What is learned in books can’t have the same deep effect on us as is learned through experience. In social practice, we can surely make progress in both knowledge and ability. Besides, by taking a part-time job we may get paid more or less to help our family. Thus, I will say a senior school student should take a part-time job in holidays, if possible, of course.
