In the old days divers used to go down into the sea looking for ships that had sunk, because they hoped to find gold and jewels. Now divers still search for valuable things in sunken ships but they also try to bring to the surface the ships themselves, or parts of them. The value of different kinds of metals has increased greatly over the last twenty or thirty years and even though a ship has been under the sea for many years, it may be worth a great deal.

One famous sunken ship is the “Lusitania”, which sank off the southern coast of Ireland in 1915 with a loss of nearly 1,500 lives. It had four huge propellers made of an expensive metal. Today each of those propellers is worth $3,000,000 or more. The ship, lying on the sea-bed, has been bought by a man called John Light. He paid about $12,000 for the whole ship. He hopes to bring up those propellers and sell them. He also hopes to sell other parts of the ship, when he has brought them to the surface, for about $6,000,000.

The “Andria Doria” is another valuable ship lying on the sea-bed. It is an Italian passenger ship which sank in 1956 after a collision(互撞) with a Swedish ship. The ship itself is worth at least $30,000,000 and in addition she was carrying over $4,800,000 in money and many other valuable things. There is one silver object which is worth $1,200,000. But the ship is lying in deep water which is very dark and cold. A strong current also sweeps past the ship and so far divers have been unsuccessful.

56.Divers try to bring up metal from sunken ships because __________.

A.    it has been in the sea for a long time

B.    metal becomes better after it has been in the sea

C.    some kinds of metal are worth a lot of money today

Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling or swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be a game of some kind, football, hockey (曲棍球), golf, or tennis. It may be mountaineering.

Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks on high mountains? This astonishment is caused probably by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.

Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of a different thing that it would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.

If we compare mountaineering and other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”. We should be mistaken in this. There are, it is true, no “matches” between “teams” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork.

The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than men. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.

A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions are in their early twenties. But it is not unusual for a man of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they probably climb with more skill and less waste of efforts, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.

60. Mountaineering is a sport which involves______.

A. hardship B. cold C. physical risk D. all of the above

61. The main difference between a sport and a game has something to do with the kind of_____.

A. it is an Olympic event

B. teams compete against each other

C. mountaineers depend on each other while climbing

D. there are 5 climbers on each team

63. Mountaineers compete against ______.

A. each other. B. nature.

C. other teams. D. international standards.

64. What is the best title for the passage?

A. Mountaineering Is Different from Golf and Football.

B. Mountain Climbers.

C. Mountaineering .

D. Mountaineering Is More Attractive than Other Sports

Exercise is one of the few factors with a positive role in long-term maintenance of body weight. Unfortunately, that message has not gotten through to the average American, who would rather try switching to "light" beer and low-calorie bread than increase physical exertion. The Centers for Disease Control, for example, found that fewer than one-fourth of overweight adults who were trying to shed pounds said they were combining exercise with their diet.

In rejecting exercise, some people may be discouraged too much by caloric-expenditure charts; for example, one would have to briskly walk three miles just to work off the 275 calories in one delicious Danish pastry (小甜饼). Even exercise professionals concede half a point here. "Exercise by itself is a very tough way to lose weight," says York Onnen, program director of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

Still, exercise's supporting role in weight reduction is vital. A study at the Boston University Medical Center of overweight police officers and other public employees confirmed that those who dieted without exercise regained almost all their old weight, while those who worked exercise into their daily routine maintained their new weight.

If you have been sedentary (极少活动的) and decide to start walking one mile a day, the added exercise could burn an extra 100 calories daily. In a year's time, assuming no increase in food intake, you could lose ten pounds. By increasing the distance of your walks gradually and making other dietary adjustments, you may lose even more weight.

D. They know the factors that play a positive role in keeping down body weight.

A. they think it is physically exhausting
B. they find it hard to exercise while on a diet
C. they don't think it possible to walk 3 miles every day
D. they find consulting caloric-expenditure charts troublesome

67. "Even exercise professionals concede half a point here" (Line 3, Para. 2) means "They .
A. agree that the calories in a small piece of pastry can be difficult to work off by exercise
B. partially believe diet plays a supporting role in weight reduction
C. are not fully convinced that dieting can help maintain one's new weight
D. are not sufficiently informed of the positive role of exercise in losing weight

68. What was confirmed by the Boston University Medical Center's study?       .
A. Controlling one's calorie intake is more important than doing exercise.
B. Even occasional exercise can help reduce weight.
C. Weight reduction is impossible without exercise.
D. One could lose ten pounds in a year's time if there's no increase in food intake.

69. What is the author's purpose in writing this article?
A. To justify the study of the Boston University Medical Center.
B. To stress the importance of maintaining proper weight.
C. To support the statement made by York Onnen.
D. To show the most effective way to lose weight.

Do you want to watch a hot movie while chatting with your friend on the phone, or shop with your mobile while on a train? The ongoing construction of a new telecommunication service will make these things reality, very soon.

It is reported that China is to issue its first licence for the commercial use of third generation telecommunication technology early next year.

The so-called 3G technology will enable mobile phone users to enjoy high-speed Internet-based services. It will help increase mobility in many areas of our life.

Nowadays, many mobile phones also allow you to send e-mails or read the latest stories on the Internet, but their services are limited by their transporting speed, which is only 10 kilobytes per second. But 3G will enable you to connect to the Internet with a speed of up to 2 megabytes per second, a thousand times faster than what you use now.

If recent mobile technology is like riding a bike on a country road, then 3G will make you fly on the information highway. For example, a mobile phone with 3G technology will enable you to download a three minutes’ MP3 song within two minutes. But at the moment, it will take you up to an hour to do this with your mobile phone.

In the near future, we’ll expect high-speed access to the Internet, entertainment, information and electronic commerce services wherever we are – not just at our computers or television sets.

In the UK and many other European countries where 3G services have been around since 2003, 3G has already become a part of modern business life. Nowadays, employees are able to spend some of their working hours at home. The new technology allows the emergency services to provide a video link with a hospital or doctor for patients who need special care.

We Want to Have Our Own Time

As we all know, today students have more and more homework. They use their spare time to do the homework and to take lessons. Then, students have no time for themselves. In my opinion, students should have more time to develop themselves.

First, students should have some time to relax and play. This doesn’t mean that they will waste time. We can also study and learn from the play. After doing the homework for a long time, it is necessary to have some time to relax. “No play and no games makes Jack a dull boy.” We don’t want to be dull boys. We want to be good students in many ways.

Second, we can have our own time in order to make our body strong enough. This can be helpful in our further study.

After all, I want to say, students should have their own time to develop themselves.
